Yes friends, today was the day that Emerson and Lake first shot those damn cannons over everyone's heads...I think. Wait, by the time I finish posting this, it will have been Yesterday, and the Beatles references never end...
Oh well. Does anyone actually understand this? This was the day of "the first ever debut performance of Emerson, Lake and Palmer!" I still love that sloppy version of "Pictures."

I have DVD before Pictures, somwhere in England. They are playing staff only from their first album. I don't know which is your version?
But anyway this was their first recorded gig even before first album was out.

Nope, that's mine. DVD on one side, CD on the other. It has, lemme think..."Picture," "Pebble," "Rondo" and a version of the "Nutrocker" that somehow sounds a little out of place (poor recording quality, as comapared to the others).

I have a question. When BSS came out in '73 or whenever it was, the 1st song that our rock station played here in the Philadelphia Pa. U.S. area was the title track, BSS. It is not the same version as on Works 2. Does anybody know of, or have this version? I saw someone on this sight did a review of a flexidisc that had it on it.

Well.. after a long break from reviewing... time to get back in the saddle hahah
LADIES AND GENTLEMAN... PLEASE WELCOME FOR THEIR FIRST DEBUT PERFOMANCE...EVER
EMERSON...LAKE...AND...PALMER
of course we know it wasn't the true debut but...this is what exploded Emerson Lake
and Palmer to the forefront of progressive rock. This is a recent release from Eagle
Vision that is a single double sided CD disk. The first side is a portion of their
landmark 'debut' performance at the Isle of Wight August 29, 1970. The first side of
the disk contains a full version of their interpetation of Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at
an Exhibition'. An edited performance of Take A Pebble, a typical incendiary
performance of Rondo, and their typical show closer: Nutrocker. A great listen if
you don't have a copy of the full performance, since this album is easily and readily
available in stores today. The sound quality is excellent. Recommended if a first
time exposure to this show.
The second side is what makes the album worth the few stars I'm going to give it.
The second side is a DVD that contains a new film with a synopsis of the group..
their beginnings and some great insight into their creative thoughts and
inspirations. The section on The Moog, and Augmenting the music are especially
interesting. This film incorporates the Murray Lerner film that was shot of the group
performing at the Isle of Wright. Anyone familiar with his previous films out on the
market.. The Jethro Tull and Message to Love DVD's will know that at times crowd
shots are interspaced into the music. Take a Pebble is a particular waste unless you
want to see dirty hippies bathing at the beach..picking up...pebbles hhahahha. The
two standouts are the INCREDIBLE perfromance of Mussorgsky.. complete with the
infamous cannons and Rondo of course...knives and Carl Palmer drum solo included.
Though the Masters from the Vault (Beyond the Beginning) DVD versions of Rondo are
better.
All in all, I gained some more insight into what I feel is a fascinating and
completely essential band in the annuls of progressive rock. 4 stars for personal
enjoyment... 2 stars for the the forum at large. You will learn more about ELP with
this, but it's not essential.

I know what you're talking about. I've never heard the Ise of Wight debut, but I have a dvd of a show they did a few days before, and its amazing. I think its called Masters From The Vaults. Has about 5 songs on it, and random 'special effects' usually of water boiling or some spiral effect. Anyway, the playing is amazing, and in the middle of Take A Pebble Greg Lake cuts into Old Blue where he usually did either Lucky Man or Still You Turn Me On as a solo acoustic spot. And for some reason, Carl Palmer comes out with finger cymbals and they end the song together. Made me laugh. Anyway, I highly recomend checking it out.
Anyway, most people I know have never listened to prog, or heard of ELP, and the cannon thing is one of the stories about ELP that I tell them. Along with Keith's spinning piano at the California Jam.

I would kill to see KE, but he's not touring the US anytime soon. But my spirits are high as Carl Palmer is doing a US tour for both his band as well as Asia.

I last saw them in '97 and they were great. It was an old theater and Keith brought the roof down litterally while doing the solo at the end of Lucky Man. I was to see them again while on tour with Deep Purple and Dream Theater which would have been a dream concert had they not cancelled it when I got to my seat. I have been a fan of ELP since the 1st album. Seen them 4 or 5 times and hope to see them again.

Hi Every one
first post on the site - i'm so jassed to see so many like minded peeps in here.
anyways; with all the hoohah regarding 'will YES tour or won't they" and with Emo playing with Chris Squier at the Led Zep gig this year , I am thinking the timing is perfect for Chris and Emo to get together formaly , either with Alan White or better yet Carl Palmer and put something together.
Imagine Emerson Squire and Palmer - ESP.
in Emo's book he says he asked Chris at the same time as asking Greg...
come on guys make ESP happen!
good to meet y'all

I heard Jimmy Page broke his finger, so they delayed the gig until December, so with that, Rick Wakeman cant play with them because he had a prior engagement he has to be at.
But still, Keith Emerson, Chris Squire and Carl Palmer would be great, but not as great as a ELP reunion. A mutual reunion, as Keith and Greg have some issues.

| If you ask me, that rating isn't high enough That album took a feeling Itchycock hinted at and went to the next level with it. People have the same problem here that they have with Selling England, the short songs don't "do it"...but I'd be lying if I said they don't work perfectly at bridging those longer pieces while keeping the dark victorian mood. And Harold the Barrel is mighty impressive commentary from a 21 year old...and I don't see why Seven Stones isn't held in the same regard as the other three long tracks, the use of build up from verse to chorus is a prog trademark.
I do understand how it can be annoying to see people drooling all over stuff that doesn't appeal to you though...there's that one metal band that plays reeeaaalll fast...oops, never mind...

For all you ELP fans out there I'd like to mention that Works Volume II has some really cool stuff on it, yet it gets a gratuitous write off due to the tedium of Works Vol I. Read some of the more positive reviews for more info.
The early version of ELP is a truly unique band with its own take on rhythm, harmony, compostition etc. They are like a lot of early progressive rock bands, out on a limb and taking crazy chances, when they are bad they are awful, but when they are good ...

I love the short songs on those early Genesis albums, personally. I think every Genesis album from 'Nursery Cryme' through 'A Trick Of The Tail' is 5 star worthy; I can't think of any other prog band I feel quite that way about (Yes come closest but I have to concede that TFTO I find too flawed to give 5 stars too, though I do enjoy it). I'll never see them as average; even on their 80s albums there are some real gems, IMHO. To be frank, I'd take a lot of their 80s work over the vast majority of highly touted modern symphonic prog/prog metal bands. The songwriting is in another league to stuff like Kaipa and Glass Hammer, IMHO.
To get back to ELP, they are the most unfairly lambasted band in prog, IMHO. I don't go a bundle on anything they did from 1977 onwards (with the one exception of the Emerson, Lake and Powell album) but from 1970-3, their output is pretty much uniformly superb (save some of the 2nd side of 'Tarkus' and 'Benny The Bouncer', IMHO). A local book shop has a copy of Edward Macan's 'The Endless Enigma' and he makes a very impassioned plea for reappraisal in there. Their main 'crime' was not adhering to the standard 'blues orthodoxy', it seems. I did read a wonderful review on a non-prog site of their anthology where it said we could really do with a band like ELP who were larger than life and very bold at the moment. Certainly, in the UK the mainstream music scene is an absolute cesspit of rubbish, IMHO. I can scarcely think of another period where so many bands have sounded the same (Libertines/Coldplay/Arctic Monkeys clones).

I think that was part of the greatness of ELP. They took things to a new level, and did stuff no one else did or thought of doing.

I hope Muse is not considered 'mainstream' then
ELP's crime was probably to enjoy themself too much. They didn't die for their art and didn't spend endless hours in live performance staring at their feet like so many so called 'serious' artists do.ELP were pretentious admittedly and thats what critics dwell on ,conveniently ignoring the fact thats lots of mainstream acts were/are equally pretentious.

You're so right. If you watch a video of an ELP concert, you can tell they are having so much fun doing what they were doing. Heck, you can tell from just listening to them play live.

ELP are played at some point every day in my house/car/ipod.
to me they are/were enthusiastic, inventive and original. I'd even say 'Love Beach ( no - keep reading!!) has some good points. 'Canario' is quite superb!
I never really got why they were so lambasted by the press or seen as over the top. i tthink this is a myth -if you see any videos or pictures, it wasn't any more over thr top than YES, The Who, or whoever else you care to mention from the same era. I think the genesis ( ho ho) of the lions share of this immpression appears to have been hinted to in Emos book. they didn't get along with the press or many other bands.
I think ELP's crime was they were sussessful with little obviouls hard work ( in their ELP incarnation - i don't doubt they paid their dues in The Nice, King Crimson and TCWOAB) and you know how we in the UK hate success - especialy that of one ( or three) of our own and especialy world wide success.
oh how i'd love them to kiss and lake up and do one last tour!

In conjunction with your post, in KE's autobiography, he claims the same thing as why the critics hated them. He claims they were too good. Im not sure if I believe that 100%, but they WERE good at what they did. So I dont know if its ego talking or truth though.

yeah i mean if you look at the live video of 'Pictures,' it's pretty basic stuff. i mean b they had a couple of connons at Ilsel of wight so what. i'm sure the Who and Jimi did some of their art destruction at the same event.
and they later had a couple of armadilloes. hmmm not very rock and roll for sure. but no worse than inflatable dinasuars. oh they used an orchestra! em.. Metallica any one ?
all in all i don't see why Pink floyd get lauded for doing even more ott stuff and producing arguably lesser works.

I think its because ELP wasnt as mainstream as The Who or Floyd, so it was looked down upon more because they were already pretty different from the mainstream stuff, even though from what I understand, prog rock was pretty mainstream in the 70's.

As I've mentioned before on this site, back in the day Emerson did more to get us keyboard players noticed during AND laid after a gig than anyone else in the history of rock, possibly excepting Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis, but I'll leave their contributions to your imaginations. Suddenly keyboard players were desireable in a way that had been previously reserved for ANY other instrument, maybe excluding cellos or something. But the spinning piano was the end of the line for me.

Man, I wonder how they did that....I can't imagine going to an ELP concert, and during KE 9: 3rd Impression, seeing the keyboardist spinning around like a machine. O_O
That must have been almost as awesome as a Genesis concert with Peter Gabriel.

it actualy sound like it was basicly a bunch of guys behind the curtain, spinning him around with a big handle
They tried it later with a bigger piano with fireworks coming out of it , and went so fast, he started panicing but then it stopped suddenly and Emo smashed his face of the piano!
Poor soul - all those years on a motorbike without a helmet - and it turns out he needed one to play the piano!

When I saw the spinning piano, I think he was playing Take A Pebble, but it's been 35 years or so. My memory of the concert is probably impaired, though it was definitely the Brain Salad Surgery tour as I also remember the wall-o'-synth sprouting wings at the end.

yeah they had these wings come out form behind the modular moog - it looks like those big wings the beastie had in the film 'Jeepers Creepers!'
I have that 'from the beginning DVD' - it's absolute gold. there is even footage of them writing and rehearsing for the BSS album.
I was to young to go to their concerts in the 70's, being only a 8 or 9 - just a bairn! Still, I'm catching up. Hopefully going to get the Montreux one and the Royal Albert hall one as well. Good reviews on Amazon!
Emo has played a big part of the sound I'm trying to capture with my band these days. it's a sort of Rick Emerson thing - or perhaps a Keith Wakeman? who knows? who cares!!!!! I'm having fun and spelling correctly for a change! (it won't last!)

Yep, the modular Moog would rotate 45 degrees to face the audience, and then it sprouted huge metallic wings. All the while it was playing the little sequence that ends the Brain Salad Surgery album, which got louder and louder, faster and faster, until it ended.

I am so glad I saw ELP on their Black Moon tour(I was in 3rd row!). At the time(1993)the only ELP I had heard was the Black Moon album and the Best of.When they started playing Tarkus,I actually thought that it was a new song! I was also wondering why the hell Greg was wearing sunglasses at the beginning of the show. When they did Pictures....I thought, wow, this must be what music in Heaven sounds like. I imagine all the prog haters think ELP is what music in HELL sounds like! Saw'em again in 96 when they opened for Tull.Carl was a bit perturbed when he noticed that it was starting to rain.
