The Sweet at Nottingham Rock City 1980.Horribly loud...couldn't hear a damn thing for 2 days after.
I never saw any band in the seventies but my friend who saw a lot of bands in the late sixties and seventies rates The Nice at Wolverhampton Civic Hall 1968 as the loudest gig he ever witnessed (ahead of even Hawkwind!).

The loudest band I've heard personally was Slovenian punk band Pankrti.

no, they dont mean that, and Suffocation is "louder" than Cryptopsy, although Cryptopsy's drummer is freaking unbelievable.

Hey I used to make a similar joke about VanHalen 25 years ago when Eddie was getting gobs of attention for his guitar tone. At the time the rock press was calling it the "brown sound". Not being a big fan (and given the subject of the previous post) you can imagine how I interpreted that.

Actually, the theory isn't that they play so loud that you
defecate, but so low. It's called the theory of the "brown note"
and has never been proven or extensively documented.

Yeah post-rock and "wall of sound" shoegazer bands can get really loud. I've seen tons of metal bands, but the loudest concert I've been to was Mono. They can build a song from almost silence to the most deafening clamour. The guitars have so many looped layers the sound is literally more punishing than any metal band could ever be.

I used to own a SUNN 0))) amplifier. That was the name of the company ND the Logo. Last I heard Fender had bought them out. I wonder if the band has the permissin to use both name and logo. It was a fairly major brand name in the late 60's and early 70's. Not particulaly loud though.

Another band that was way loud was the Swans (the police shut down many of their concerts because it was a health hazard.)
Sleep and their guitarist Matt Pike's next band (High On Fire) are both insanely loud.
And of course you have the classic example of Motorhead.

Exactly there was no guitar, bass, drums or vocals it was just a din. Totally awful. TL smoked though.

Led Zeppelin 1979, my head was buzzing for two days and Rush 2005, it's one of my favorite bands but I went to the toilet a few extra times to escape from the 100 plus decibels, aweful and a disgrace to such a band ...

The only concert where I walked out of with ears ringing was a show in 1978 Foghat and Thin Lizzy. Foghat was loud it was just a din you couldn't distinguish anything. Thin Lizzy was loud but not that loud. I had to leave as it was actually painful. I was there to see TL anyway Gary Moore was playing with them.

Robert Fripp wears earplugs, so he doesn't particularly care.
Mystic Fred is correct: the Guinness Book lists Deep Purple as the loudest band ever in concert: they were measured at 132 decibels - louder than a jet plane at take-off when standing 30 feet away.
I saw Led Zeppelin: they were not overly loud. Just loud enough...LOL
Peace.

The loudest I ever heard was a Robert Plant gig, I swear I could feel my heart shuddering!
