By far the loudest band I ever heard was Sammy Hagar at the Hammersmith Odeon in the early 80s....there was an extra tier of speakers on either side of the stage that wasn't used during the concert proper.......which was loud enough....then, for encore, he did "Red" - and the extra speakers were switched on......I'm not claiming it was the best concert ever.......but certainly my loudest....I honestly had ringing in my ears for 3 days .....

Spinal Tap of course, one of britain's loudest bands
seriously, I went to a lot of shows when I was younger and did almost 12 years less than 10 feet from my own Marshall stack.
The ringing never stops, sounds like crickets inmy head 24-7 and I miss a good third of the conversations around me.

That's a fact - although it was a while ago already (they were said to have played a concert with sound up to 163 dB in Belgium once). No idea if someone ever beat that record, but it sure isn't my idea of a great concert anymore.
I recall a friend's wife actually leaving the hall during Rush concert in Rotterdam (Roll the Bones tour), halfway through Neils drum solo. Not sure if it was really that loud - given that she was pregnant at the time...

As I was scrolling down the thread, I was so psyched to mention
Manowaronly to see that Cygnus beat me to it. Either way, death to
false metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The loudest show I ever ecperienced was Blid Idiot God, around 1994, at
CBGB. They must have had 8 cabinets for a really small space. It was
like being caught inside a turbine of the Millenium Falcon.
Fortunately, it didn't feel bad at all since Andy Hawkins' guitar was
so rich harmonically. It was like a Glenn Branca orchestra (who was
also immensely loud, but not as loud as B.I.G.) condensed into a power
trio. More than any show i've been to, the music was a massive,
physical presence in the room, expanding and compressing all of your
particles, simultaneously.

Motorhead are pretty loud, in fact the last time I saw them a few years ago at the Brixton Academy, was easily the loudest gig I have ever been to, I think they got into trouble that night as well for being too load for too long!!!! My ears were still ringing for the whole of the following day

Robert Fripp wears earplugs, so he doesn't particularly care.
Mystic Fred is correct: the Guinness Book lists Deep Purple as the loudest band ever in concert: they were measured at 132 decibels - louder than a jet plane at take-off when standing 30 feet away.
I saw Led Zeppelin: they were not overly loud. Just loud enough...LOL

The only concert where I walked out of with ears ringing was a show in 1978 Foghat and Thin Lizzy. Foghat was loud it was just a din you couldn't distinguish anything. Thin Lizzy was loud but not that loud. I had to leave as it was actually painful. I was there to see TL anyway Gary Moore was playing with them.

You guys are forgetting a lot of major bands. Sunn O))) are frighteningly loud, I refused to go to their concerts because of the horror stories I heard. (They play so loud that you crap your pants, literally no joke)
Another band that was way loud was the Swans (the police shut down many of their concerts because it was a health hazard.)
Sleep and their guitarist Matt Pike's next band (High On Fire) are both insanely loud.
And of course you have the classic example of Motorhead.

Yeah post-rock and "wall of sound" shoegazer bands can get really loud. I've seen tons of metal bands, but the loudest concert I've been to was Mono. They can build a song from almost silence to the most deafening clamour. The guitars have so many looped layers the sound is literally more punishing than any metal band could ever be.

Actually, the theory isn't that they play so loud that you

....just to go to the other extreme (and just how much further off topic can one go?...), the most well-mannered, if not perhaps the quietest, rock concert I went to was also at Hammersmith Odeon. The band was 10cc (post split), and it's the only time I've ever seen everyone in the audience sitting quietly, not standing and shouting, and bestowing polite, but genuinely appreciative, applause at the end of each song. Bizarre, but a good concert nonetheless...

Sunn0))) isn't a band. They produce oscillating low frequencies that drone seemingly endlessly until their set is over, at which point half the people boo and the other half clap because they're conditioned to do so.
I just saw them at the Fillmore in SF...yeah they're pretty loud but nothing too bad.
I mused to my friend that if I were in that band I would commence to release an album every day of the year for the entireity of my career with them. The thing you could do is have a concept year...an album a day, and then on just one day have an album of incredibly dynamic music.

The loudest gig I ever went to was "The Grand Mothers" at The Robin Hood 2 in Bilston. Napoleon Murphy Brock and the guys were going great and did justice to a load of old Zappa stuff but the sound was frighteningly loud in that small venue. I actually had to put my fingers in my ears on a few occasions; something I didn't even need to do at Motorhead gigs. Having said that I remember seing Motorhead at the Newcastle Mayfair in 1985. The gig was late starting due to technical problems and they eventually let us in for the end of the sound check. There were periods of silence while things were adjusted and then Phil launched into the intro to Overkill to test the kick drum on the PA. It pretty much drove us back against the far wall.

The concert that caused the most distress upon my hearing was when I saw Megadeth in Philadelphia. The opening act was Exodus (with their new, not so good, singer) and the sound guys must have rushed because the music was too loud and too distorted, and even though I knew the songs I could hardly make anything out. My ears rang for a week and a half afterwards and I seriously thought that I had received permanent tinnitus as a result. From now on, when I go to a small club, I'm bringing ear plugs.

MOTÖRHEAD! I've seen them quite a few times now and they've been loud, but usually not too painful. Then one time I saw them at Glasgow Barrowlands and it was so loud I couldn't hear properly for a week. It was too loud to enjoy the music properly. There seems to be myth amongst lesser sound technicians that louder is better. You see it most often at small club and pub gigs. Loud is great if the equipment can take it but push amps and speakers too far and all you get is an incoherent mush that hurts the ears.
One of the most consistently good sound systems that I've heard has been the PA at the Cropredy Festival. Hats off too their sound engineer.

The first time I saw Motorhead as a youth they left my ears ringing for days. It was astonishingly loud, and since then I'd not seen / heard anyone louder until last year when I saw Hawkwind in a small venue with a low roof - they were ear splitting. It's definately all to do with the size of the place and if the sound man has realised he needs to turn it down from the previous nights gig in a big hall, or whatever.
Talking about the Cropredy PA, I have to agree the sound there is usually crystal clear, and much better near the front. I was there this year and it was fantastic as usual, although there were grumblings during Fairport's set when a section of the crowd on the right began shouting 'we can't hear Ric (Sanders)'. They soon put it right.

My loudest was sitting 2 metres from Gary Husband's drums, when part of
Allan Holdsworth group in the mid 90's not only deafened but had my
hair literally parted by a flying drumstick - ended as a trophy of that
night and now sits in front of me. Worst loud sound I heard was from
Pin Fairies at Kingston Swimming Baths - couldn't stand more than 30
minutes of the volume and the awful echoey acoustics.
Being on my Uni's ENTS Committee in the mid 70's we had to
monitor sound levels in the halls used. One band hit 109dB 10 metres
from their main speakers (and one freak spent many band nights with his
head inside speaker cones)..... I think is was suggested Traffic were
pretty loud at 115dB - apparently like standing behind Concorde
as it took off - without getting scorched by the jets. We also had the
university's airport sound monitor research group in - geenrating noise
and determining tolerable levels in "volunteers. Be assured 96db of
12000HZ average white noise is painful in a 600 seater hall (empty)

Ironically the first concert I ever went to was the loudest. It was a Black Sabbath tribute originally titled Slack Babbath, and since I had no previous experience my loud sound resistance just wasn't there. Being about 10 feet from the main speaker didn't help too much and I was phycially deaf in the ear closest to the speaker for a few days, with the ringing taking 2 weeks to subside.
A week after that I saw Daevid Allen's University of Errors (a band that should be on this site much more then Iron Maiden) and couldn't hear half the concert due to my right ear so sat in the same seat as the previous week, backwards...

Yup. Motorhead! Definately Loud I've seen Slayer 7 times and never found them to be excessively loud.
I found Tool's Lateralus show extremely loud but then again I'm startin' to get old and don't seem to need the volume jacked to 11 quiet as often.
Pardon, did some one say something???

The loudest show i've been too was only about a week ago, I saw Kayo Dot in a place that only holds like.. 35 people, And i was literally right between Mia Matsumiya and Toby Driver, any closer and i would have been inside of them. So tihs meand i was surrounded by all this stuff. and when they Played "Don't Touch Dead Animals" (the new song that usually makes people leave Mia told me) Was Frightenly loud and crazy. But it was awesome.
I bet Merzbow or Gerogerigegege could be the loudest. i mean Merzbow plays a defening high pitch screech for thirty minutes straight. then gets even louder later on.

The concerts that I remember being the loudest are Opeth and Yngwie Malmsteen. I was really in pain at the Opeth concert. I didn't expect them to be as loud as they were, but my hearing didn't really come back for about 2 days.
I'm going to see Mastodon tonight. I'm bringing earplugs for sure.

Man, if britney or Justin desire it, they can put the loudest concert ever. They have the MONEY to do it. So I think that we should ask this question looking for bands in the glory days. And the answer is clear: THE WHO and, after them, DEEP PURPLE.

I seem to remember Deep Purple held the distinction of loudest group for some time...? I know they were once included in the Guiness book of records as the loudest band in the world.

Yes, I too have seen it on a Guiness book, but I can't recall of which year. Could it have been 2005?

I don't know...both the Who and Purple being the 'loudest band' sounds a little like mythologic spin, and out of date as well. Gotta be Motorhead; Monsters of Metal Tour, 1983 or so.

Of the top of my head, Deep Purple were in the Guiness book in the early seventies as the loudest band, until The Who nicked the 'honour' around 1974/5 with their concert at The Valley, Charlton Athletic's ground. Since then, I don't know. I don't think volume is as much of an issue these days for live bands, it's more the sound quality that they're looking for, I hope.

Yes, both bands certainly held the title according to various good sources, but at this point I doubt it. And what is 'loudest'- did they simply take decible readings?
...and I don't know if I've ever heard a louder *recording* than 'Red'.
