Long time, no see, Pat ![]() Moorea is indeed a force of nature. We were lucky to see MoeTar in the summer of 2012 at Orion Studios - a double bill with miRthkon, and a fantastic evening of music! Shame both bands are no more. However, Moorea and her hubby Tarik have a new project in the works, by the name of Raze the Maze. Anyway, most of my favourite vocalists are not prog, or at least not totally so. Glenn Hughes comes very high in my list, together with the likes of Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio. However, if I had to mention someone who very rarely gets a shout out, in spite of his incredible vocal talent, I'd go for Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance. Lisa Gerrard is, of course, another huge favourite, but to me Brendan's voice is one of the band's greatest strengths.

While I"m a huge prog fan, I often find prog vocals disappointing, and often downright annoying. My gravitation to prog is largely instrumental. That said, here's 5 prog vocalists I really like:
John Wetton Justin Hayward Ian Anderson Greg Lake Geddy Lee Outside prog, it's Ronnie James Dio Roger Daultry Rik Emmett Rick Medlocke Sass Jordan And I do love the Female Fronted/Symphonic Metal Cristina Scabbia Sharon Den Adel Tarja Turunen Floor Jansen Amy Lee EDIT: Have really been appreciating Spock's Beard lately. I always loved Morse's vocals in Transatlantic, but Spock's Beard is just as good. So for my top 5 prog vocalists, Greg Lake gets the boot and Neal Morse is in.

I can't pick only 5, but a mix of my favs and the latest kicks are mixed.
David Gilmour John Lennon Roger Hodgson Jim Morrison David Bowie Chuck Negron Dewey Bunnell Jack Bruce Grace Slick Fairuz Catherine Howe Roger Daltrey P.S. - Was Peter Sando the vocalist from Gandalf? I tried listening to some solo stuff of his, but it the voice didn't match. Edited by MortSahlFan - March 25 2018 at 06:13 |

Ronnie is one of the best singers of any genre. Kudos. Nice to see another person who likes Oliva, too! Zak Stevens, who took over singing fulltime on Edge of Thorns, is also a fine vocalist. Very different sound, but he succeeded where others wouldn't have fit in.

Actually, my favourite Nighwish album has become Imaginaerum... there's just something magical about it. But I wouldn't say it's because of Anettes vocals, and most of the songs, at least in the vocal department, I like better on the live versions with Floor. Dark Passion Play is good, but not at the same level for me. From Roger, yeah, The Final Cut has some of the best of his trademark singing, and Amused to Death is really great... but I wasn't really much impress by the last one (I liked much better Gilmour's latest one). And Stargazer by Dio is wonderful indeed, some really powerful singing there, though I havent heard "Sunset Superman". |

Hey man. Yeah Anette Olzen did a great job singing on Dark Passion Play (2007) and Imaginarium (2011) These 2 albums are actually my favourite NIGHTWISH albums done to date, so Annette gets full praise. Roger Waters. He's just very unique much like a Peter hammil or a Jon Anderson. I wouldn't say roger is a skilled vocalists by any means, but I love his screams and emotion he puts forth into his music. Like The Final Cut is brilliant to me and of course Amused to Death is his magnem opus solo album. He is a winner and his latest album "Is this the life we really want ?' Is right up there with some of the best albums I've heard all year in 2017. Lastly. DIO. He is the undisputed champion. Nuff said. :) Know one for me has more power than that guy. Listen to how he sings on "Sunset Superman" and "Stargazer." Knocks me on my ass. Lol. |

I don't know many of these, but I do find it strange that you put Anette from Nightwish instead of Tarja, or at least Floor. On the other hand, I do love DIO, I believe he is my very favourite Metal singer... though I guess his work was closer to hard rock than to metal. Also, I'm glad Waters gets some love; I do believe he was a great and very unique singer that often gets overlooked... however, I can hardly think of someone capable of putting so much passion and emotion to their singing (specially on the utter despair department). |

Hi, Of all the folks named here, I have to agree that PH is probably the best of them all ... and was absolutely wonderful in VdGG and Solo material specially in the 70's and 80's for me! However, I'm not sure that I would leave behind one of the best poets in the music scene, and I think his expression is just as good as PH's with the exception that we do not think that "folk music" is progressive, and does not deserve the poop accolades that we give it. Roy Harper is probably just as good as PH and his output is just as strong and valuable.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
