No. I said " they were much more than just a psychedelic pop rock band " But I think at 45 you are still too young to understand the impact of the Beatles on the prog and music in general.

Hi. Many of us (PA fans) love or like beatles. I start with them when I was 13-14 years old( Now I am 45). I agree with you my friend but IMO they never been a Prog Rock band or they never start Prog Rock Genre. As you said I think They are " just a psychedelic pop rock band " |

I think this would make an album of about one hour (60:49) with their proggiest songs:
All You Need Is Love 3:47 Rain 3:02 Norwegian Wood 2:05 A Day in the Life 5:33 Happiness Is a Warm Gun 2:43 Strawberry Fields Forever 4:10 I Want You (She's So Heavy) 7:47 Helter Skelter 4:29 Tomorrow Never Knows 2:57 Within You Without You 5:05 Here Comes the Sun 3:05 I Am the Walrus 4:33 Revolution 9 8:22 Good Night 3:11 (I added Good Night because the transiton from Revolution 9 goes quite unnoticed) |

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles, but however you look at things, Bruford said it perfectly. They may not be Prog per se, but surely innovative, adventurous and influential - everything a Prog band is

Bill Bruford interview in modern drummer http://www.moderndrummer.com/site/2007/08/bill-bruford/#_
MD: What sparked that original creative spark that became prog rock? Bill: The Beatles. They broke down every barrier that ever existed. Suddenly you could do anything after The Beatles. You could write your own music, make it ninety yards long, put it in 7/4, whatever you wanted. |

OK. I'm French. Sorry for the accent I know The Beatles weren't prog. That term did not even exist until 1970. But they were the pioneers. And they were much more than just a psychedelic pop rock band even if they had 5 or 6 real psychedelic songs. They were more experimental and innovator to me. They were also more progressive than regressive music band. Edited by musitron - August 20 2014 at 12:09 |

And here we are again about what is progressive and what isn't.
I have never thought the BEATLES were 'progressive rock' in any way but they did have some unusual use of instruments, orchestration, and techniques in some of their songs but when I was listening to them back in the day (I'm 63), I always saw those elements as more psych pop/rock. Who knows! That would probably be different without The Beatles.

Beatles “prog side” emerged after Rubber Soul. They were definitely pioneers of so called progressive rock. Conversely, if they didn’t do it, someone else would have. |

The Beatles were my first favorite group. Growing up, my parents had a few albums. Maybe that's where my love of prog ideas started.

Sargent Peppers for me. Very experimental/instrumental album.
Broke some new ground, especially for 1967. |

I respect your opinion but many artists do not think like you. "Tomorrow Never Knows" was like a breakthrough, and from then on, obviously they got into other major work, so they were the gods." - Jon Anderson And listen what Peter Hamil said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJJ7gQBdrZw#t=124 |

I would add "Within You Without You" to an already excellent list.

In my opinion, there isn't a "Beatles prog side" and I think prog rock would have existed without them anyway.

The Beatles trained me at a very early age to look for interesting combinations and structures in music. It's the backbone upon which my whole collection is based.
Except maybe for that Wham album. Edited by HolyMoly - August 19 2014 at 17:17 |
