I've heard it too many times, but Stairway is still the classic

I would never actively choose to listen to Stairway (I heard it way too much in the 70s, and have not yet recovered from the overkill, so it still sounds trite to me, other than the guitar solo near the end), but might choose "Child in Time", so it gets my vote

Both great song, of course, but Stairway takes the lead for me

it really is apples and oranges here....
i went for zeppelin, but partly because i´m trying to seduce this beautiful woman, who apparently doesn´t know any of the songs....???? if you need some (almost) celtic romance sing-a-long-song, then you should go for the zep, but if you want the screams of a castrated rock n´roll frontman mixed with a great improv - Sheep Hurdle should be your choice. |

Stairway to Heaven is, basicly, a stolen idea ...
PS actually, both epics by those extreme ambitiosly British bands are ripped off from two instrumental pieces made by two bands from California in 1968 Edited by ko - November 14 2009 at 23:13 |

Stairway to Heaven is better composition-wise, but something about the raw energy/passion of Child In Time wins me over.

Stairway To Heaven has been done to death, unfortunately. Voted for Child In Time. Ian Gillan's vocal performance never ceases to amaze me, after all these years. Both are great tracks.

Can't be Pembroke in Wales can it - at least not in 2009? Only a couple of streets to scream along - but parked cars restrict the flow - and then you're either into the countryside or fallen into Milford Haven????

Stairway to Heaven.
The construction of "Child in Time" is not very interesting, even it's a strong and striking song. |

I still remember (over 30 years ago) riding in the back seat of my uncle's Roadrunner screaming down the streets of Pembroke when he put the 8 track tape of Deepest Purple on the stereo....Child In Time totally blew away my 6 year old brain. Voted accordingly.

A digression from the main topic: Do/Would you catalogue Switched on Bach under Wendy Carlos or Walter Carlos? A similar question would apply to Cat Stevens I suppose or Simon Dupree/Gentle Giant.

I prefer Deep Purple over Zeppelin, and worship Child In Time, but I had to vote for Stairway To Heaven. Its amazing.

Child in Time for me - a band finding their way and stretching every sinew to get where they were going.
