I thought Steppenwolf first gave us "heavy metal thunder"?
Well...it was a line in the song Born To Be Wild referring to the sound of hogs/motorcycles.....personally I don't think Steppenwolf was a metal band or even a father of metal.....a great band at one time nevertheless.
Blue Oyster Cult used to do a cover of "Born to be Wild" though my fave Steppenwolf song was "Magic Carpet Ride"...they had a great hard rock organ sound but I never considered them metal of any kind.
I think I have a version of that by BOC on one of their remastered cd's....Magic Carpet was my favorite too by Steppenwolf. I saw BOC recently near Valparaiso University in Indiana ...sadly they did not do Born To Be Wild.
I think "Born to be Wild" was on their 70's live album "On Your Feet or On Your Knees"

Steppenwolf was included in VH1's origins of metal show (years ago) just because of that lyric.
Shows you how much VH1 knows about music.

Iron Butterfly=Heavy Metal........just saying
I remember on the back album cover of In-a-Gadda-da-Vida there was a write-up about the band. It said something like "Iron because it's heavy, Butterfly because it was free" or something 60's like that

I thought of The Who as Rock.
Entwistle was invented that "metal" bass sound, that's all.
OK...but what exactly is 'metal bass sound'...? And which prog metal bands use that sound?
This is "metal" bass sound I guess:
All the metal bands were used that sound - or none of them if I'v been wrong when I said that father (grandfather, that's better) of metal sound is John Entwistle (rip) as the bassist of The Who in their heydays.
I still don't 'hear' anything other than a good solid bass sound there....you can find the same/similar sound (not referring to his playing..) in many hard rock bands of that time frame.
