I seem to remember Deep Purple held the distinction of loudest group for some time...? I know they were once included in the Guiness book of records as the loudest band in the world. ![]() |

They may not be prog bands, but Slayer and Motorhead win in this category...

Odd, since their recordings always came off a bit quiet for me. |

I've heard Mogwai is literally deafening live if you don't bring earplugs.

It was in the paper a month ago. I can't remember all of it. I just know that Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are there, and that the drummer is Ringo Starr's son.

By far the loudest band I ever heard was Sammy Hagar at the Hammersmith Odeon in the early 80s....there was an extra tier of speakers on either side of the stage that wasn't used during the concert proper.......which was loud enough....then, for encore, he did "Red" - and the extra speakers were switched on......I'm not claiming it was the best concert ever.......but certainly my loudest....I honestly had ringing in my ears for 3 days .....

I remember hearing somewhere that Manowar was the loudest band of all time (and they were put in the Guiness Book of Records for it as well).

Spinal Tap of course, one of britain's loudest bands
seriously, I went to a lot of shows when I was younger and did almost 12 years less than 10 feet from my own Marshall stack. The ringing never stops, sounds like crickets inmy head 24-7 and I miss a good third of the conversations around me. As is often the case, what seemed so cool when we're young just turns out to be plain old STOOPID Edited by composer - August 15 2006 at 17:12 |

That's a fact - although it was a while ago already (they were said to have played a concert with sound up to 163 dB in Belgium once). No idea if someone ever beat that record, but it sure isn't my idea of a great concert anymore. I recall a friend's wife actually leaving the hall during Rush concert in Rotterdam (Roll the Bones tour), halfway through Neils drum solo. Not sure if it was really that loud - given that she was pregnant at the time... |
