Prosper all the way!!!! Perhaps one of the best albums to get oneself introduced to Krautrock methinks. Love that one. S'got a little of everything: fusion, acoustic work akin to Popol Vuh, wild fiery space rock, hard n heavy orchestrated sweaty rock and just the right amount of experimentation. | Yikes! I need to get off my ass then, and find this . |
You really do Steve. I think you will lap it up like a ferocious kitten. One of those albums that changes with every spin. Not that it takes long to 'get', but it changes according to what you decide to listen for. I guess you could say that about almost any other record, I know, but on here the different parts of the equation all seem equally interesting. Today for example, I find myself more attracted to the quieter and more subtle parts of the album. |
About 2 hours ago i started to post on Prosper but it has been freaking busy in here today. But i'm glad Guldbamsen has given his 2 cents because he explains things so well. I gave this 5 stars and like David says this isn't a difficult listen by any means but it always seems different when i break it out. Weird ! Prosper's original lineup before they released this album had a bass player who left for WALLENSTEIN and a drummer who left for AERA. Anyway the drummer who is on here reminds me of some of the great Jazz drummers, he's fantastic, and the bass is very upfront. There's mellotron and some guest violin on one track as well.

I under estimated how popular Popul Vuh is on here. Lots more albums from them to come of course.

I know several of these and ZAAR! Hurdy-gurdy is definitely one of my soft spots in music. Not a big fan of that Ruins album, it takes (almost) everything I love so much about the rawness and intensity of Ruins and...makes it more symphonic. No thanks. |
What an interesting instrument that hurdy-gurdy is eh ? Sounding like violins one moment then like spacey synths and it can drone the sounds too. Zaar came out of the ashes of Sotos another killer band from France that will be on the next poll. By the way Bob Drake recorded and mixed this Zaar album. Interesting your thoughts on Ruins. I know your a big fan but like the title says this is Symphonic but man if this is Symphonic i'd call it deranged Symphonic. |
Yeah, Bob being involved with the Zaar is even more of a plus. He's a genius. I actually prefer Sotos...I've been trying to find a copy of their debut, it's VERY elusive. As for the Ruins, I know it's still closer to, say, Koenjihyakkei, than to Genesis, but something about it just rubs me wrong since I just want drums and bass and yelling in made up words when I listen to Ruins.

After relistening I"m going to go for Ruins. Idk...I do enjoy the madness of general Ruins but there is something about Symphonica that rubs me the right way. I think it's the keyboards. I almost wish they did a second album of this.

Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

I know about half of those. That Prosper album is good but definitely not the best here, also to good mention is the excellent Zaar album which I really like. Anyway my vote goes to the wonderful Xaal, not a perfect album but I really like returning to it every time. Like I said before I wish they had a better recording and mix to their albums. Recommended stuff!!

Xaal gets a deseved vote but it looks like RUINS and POPUL VUH get the most votes this time around.
