The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway has Phil Collins playing a very minor role. It is my favorite by a wide margin. Otherwise, it might have been Selling England by the Pound. It's not that I don't like Mr. Collins as a musician. I don't really fancy his songwriting ability.

Except for the first song, I always found this to be an overrated Genesis album WinkTongue
I liked that Genesis better when they started sounding less like Genesis in Fugazi and beyond... until they lost their own Gabriel.

I know people compare the Fish years Marillion with Genesis a lot, but I think the similarities are not that strong!! Nice o e DEAN.

The similarities are there imo including Fish's voice which sounds a lot like Peter Gabriel and the way the songs are stretched out with keyboard and guitar solos. The drumming style is different though and Rothery's guitar work sounds more like Brian May than Steve Hackett. Mark Kelly does sound a little like Tony Banks at times but who has the stronger influence on the Marillion sound? The early seventies Genesis sound or mid seventies Art Rock music of bands such as Queen and David Bowie?
(I was being flippant)

I have stated many times that I don't think Derek Dick does sound like Peter Gabriel - he sounds a lot more like Peter Hammill to me (and PH is one of Fish's influences) ... I think there is a lot of PH (and Roger Chapman) influence in Peter Gabriel's singing in the early years (certainly on From Genesis To Revelation) and that's is more where the similarities lay and Rothery's guitar is more Gilmour and Latimer than Hackett or May for me. Apart from Grendel there isn't a lot of Genesis in any Marillion album.

Anyway - my favourite Genesis album is From Genesis To Revelation.

... followed by Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and then Trespass.

(and that's not a joke).

For me it's Selling England By The Pound. Firth Of Fifth, The Cinema Show and my favourite Genesis track - Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. Genesis at their peak, IMO.

I always waffle on whether I favor Foxtrot or Selling England by the Pound as my favorite Genesis album from the Gabriel era. I love Foxtrot for "Watcher of the Skies," "Get 'Em Out by Friday," and "Supper's Ready," and I love Selling England by the Pound for "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, " "Firth of Fifth," and "The Cinema Show." Foxtrot probably wins for today, but I'm usually deadlocked on those two masterpieces.

In terms of the Collins-era Genesis, it's a much easier decision: Trick of the Tail over the rest.

So my top 5 goes like this right now:

1. Foxtrot
2. Selling England by the Pound
3. Trick of the Tail
4. Trespass
5. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Last time I posted I said Nursery Cryme or The Lamb. I've since decided: Nursery Cryme because it's more consistent. I also said "why people like W&W is beyond". I have to take that back: W&W has a very strong, unique atmosphere. It's the kind of record that you would have very fond memories of if you grew up with it as a kid.Me, I lament a lack of strong melodies in several tracks, so it remains at the bottom of the list of Genesis albums I'm familiar with in their entirety:

1. Nursery Cryme
2. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
3. Selling England by the Pound
4. A Trick of the Tail
5. Duke
6. Foxtrot
7. Genesis
8. Abacab
9. Trespass
10. Wind & Wuthering

I must be the only person here who likes Duke more than Foxtrot.

From what I've listened to so far...

1. Foxtrot
2. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
3. Selling England  by the Pound
4. Nursery Cryme
5. A Trick of the Tail
6. Trespass

Working on the other ones. Listening to Wind and Wuthering for the first time while I type this, in fact.
