I just finished a couple of ideas that have been bouncing around in my head for a while. I put them up on my myspace, and I was hoping I could get some constructive criticism. Every piece except Frithian was done on a single take, and the only instrument used is a five-string bass.

Tangerine Dream for the bass! Very good experimentation. The minor and major had very brooding undertones- the minor obviously darker than the major. Experimentation was very interesting- could have used some changes in the underlying rhythm (got a bit boring after a while). Frithian was a bit too much like noodling. Good playing! Hard to get bass players to step out of their rhythme cocoon but you have certainly dropped the shackles here. addition: overlay some more bass into the backing harmonies- you build up something that sounds really powerful Edited by cobb2 - July 28 2008 at 03:16 |

Good experimental ideas - would like to have heard more sustain in the early part of Minor Key Loop, and a bit more smoothness in playing would make the piece come alive. Watch your tuning (says the pot calling the kettle black...).
Major Key Loop Mk I seems to suffer in the sustain department too - I'm not keen on the "silent" sections - but that maybe because the bass drops away too quickly. Nice volume control usage - again, I think more smoothness would help.
I liked the opening to Noise Experiment Mk I - reminded me of Kraftwerk somehow. Panned out nicely too, with all the minimal changes - this is my favourite so far.
Frithian was interesting too - but it sounds like the technique you were using needs work to make it sound a little more musical. It seems clear you were going for a semi-percussive feel, but a lot of it sounds like squidged notes and bloopers - the intention comes across nicely to my ears - but this one falls down in the execution department. I like the change just before the end - pity it was cut off!
Good stuff, Jake.

Thanks for the listen, guys!
Honestly, Frithian was just me making random noises and then plugging it through a bunch of effects on audacity. I kinda like it, but it's not one of my more serious works. Major Key loop is definitely getting a do-over, as I don't really like some of the volume swells there. Plus, I'd like to have it develop a character of its own to distinguish it from the minor version. The noise piece is pretty rough right now, I definitely have some ideas in there I really like but right now I just need to cut some fat. Unfortunately, I can't really change the underlying rhythm because I'm using a Loop Station to create it. |

I was thinking about maybe extending the two ambient loop pieces, maybe to about 10 minutes each. Do you think that it would work at that length?

I put up one more piece. As before, it's just a rough draft, and I'm more concerned about the validity of ideas and proportions than I am about sloppy playing (I know there's some screwups in there).

And the only time Shakes and I ever agreed so emphatically was over matters like the Ultimate Pwn.

I think that the big problem for me is trying to figure out if that's a good thing. |

I'll accept that. For now. Grudgingly. Anyway, I'll give all your stuff a listen. Digging the first one so far, the Tangerine Dream comparison was pretty spot-on. It's reminiscent of Eno's Ambient 1.
