It indicates the band is a recent addition and has an incomplete discography. It may also indicate that they are still under consideration.

Bob, I've noticed that the * has been present on artists that have been here for as long as 6 months, take Adrian Belew for example. His discography is complete as far as I can see, and no one has objected to him being here. |

What's the point in adding this asterisk symbol behind a band name? Since only certain people can add bands to the website and only allowed bands are added, so just remove it since it is just a matter of discipline to add albums, don't think that will be a problem.
