It indicates the band is a recent addition and has an incomplete discography. It may also indicate that they are still under consideration.

Bob,
I've noticed that the * has been present on artists that have been here for as long as 6 months, take Adrian Belew for example. His discography is complete as far as I can see, and no one has objected to him being here.

in case of Nucleus, it has been there for some five months, but those that promised help to add albums have been on permanent holidays since>

I've noticed that the * has been present on artists that have been here for as long as 6 months, take Adrian Belew for example. His discography is complete as far as I can see, and no one has objected to him being here.

Meshuggah's discography is also *'ed, even though their discography is now complete on the site

I can add Out of the Long Dark because I have the info for it. I'll see what other ones are missing.

We got the major ones in anyway. The 80's releases are less interesting.

What's the point in adding this asterisk symbol behind a band name? Since only certain people can add bands to the website and only allowed bands are added, so just remove it since it is just a matter of discipline to add albums, don't think that will be a problem.
