I wrote an at length review of TFK islands last year. To sum it up, i've never been a fan of the band, a lot times due to the daunting size and length of their catalog and compositions and the sound just not being for me. Like another user put it, I always grouped them in with "dad-prog" or "modern prog for old people who don't actually like modern prog." However, last year that record totally changed my mind and perception on the band, and it actually wound up being my album of the year. Even over the likes of Wobbler, Haken and Motorpsycho, which are all bands that I generally like a lot more than TFK. I love all those songs, I like that they're shorter and more easily digestible, how melodic they are, and at the end of the day, the songs just makes me happy. When it came out, it was in a time that I really could've used something just like that and it really resonated and hit the spot.

Now, I like King Crimsons islands, I don't think its perfect but there's a lot of brilliant creative ideas and songs across that record. Boz is a great vocalist too, underrated even. However, I gotta vote for the album that I actually feel like I have a deeper connection with, and today that is Flower Kings.

I love King Crimson, but Islands puts me right to sleep.

My bandmates and I joke that ITWoP is so close to ITCoTKC in terms of sound, it's hilarious.

I think I understand what "sprog prog" means now in context, but where does it come from? What is the etymology?

I don’t think anyone really knows, even though it’s a widely used term throughout the English speaking world. There are a couple of possible etymologies, both of which have Old Norse origin, but neither are confirmed. A sprag (or variants) has been used over time for the young of various species of fish (flounder, cod and salmon being just three); and sprack means lively and full of energy. There is probably a common etymology for sprag and sprack, now I think about it - but to be honest, I’ve never really through about it. I just grew up knowing what a sprog was, because it was common parlance. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Each track on TFK's record sounded fine to me, but also it didn't trigger any emotion, or take me to any ride, so, after a couple of listens, I don't think I'm going to listen to it again.
KC's Islands, on the contrary, even not being a perfect album, is a hell of a ride to me, and I feel many listens waiting there.

Islands is one of my favorite King Crimson album, while that is not my favorite Flower Kings album. Also, King Crimson is strictly preferred for me over the Flower Kings.

Wait just a minute here...no mention of Mike Oldfield's Islands???

"The Wind Chimes" is one of the greatest things he's ever done!!!

^ It should have been included in the poll, but then I really doubt it would have get many votes, as the rating on PA is pretty low.

I'm a big Mike Oldfield fan, but Islands is among my least favorite albums from him. "Amarok" is many times better (melody- and production-wise) than "The Wind Chimes" and side two of the album is pretty average.

Both King Crimson's and TFK's Islands aren't the best albums from their respective bands, but they are far superior to Mike Oldfield's Islands in my opinion.

Amarok is my very favorite Mike Oldfield album. Islands would make my Oldfield Top Ten list, but I understand why many fans don't like it. Having both "Islands" and "When the Night's On Fire" based on the same melody is a little too much. The original USA release re-sequenced the Side Two songs, closing with "Islands" and excluding "When the Night's On Fire". I think I prefer this version.

I like both equally. Islands is KC's weakest Sinfield era album though.
