Topic: Desert Island Albums Posted: June 08 2014 at 12:59 |
Basically just 8 albums you'd take to the "desert island" and why. In no particular order:
1. Genesis - Trespass (favourite album, 'nuff said) 2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (something simple and reassuring) 3. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (also a fitting title, but very relatable and loving too, with some angry outbursts) 4. Buckethead - Look Up There (great album to look up to the stars at night time) 5. The Who - Quadrophenia (something a bit heavier, some great sea links, and most importantly 82 minutes long!) 6. Procol Harum - A Salty Dog (another album that would be reassuring and relaxing) 7. The Moody Blues - Days Of Future Passed (a bit of variation, nice to have some classical in there) 8. Iamthemorning - ~ (great to listen to on the beach, away from everything)
Other shouts for me include "Agaetis Byrjun", "Islands", "The Geese And The Ghost", "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Ommadawn", "Rock Bottom", "Zeit" and "Tales From Topographic Oceans".
As always, thanks for any feedback!

1: Gong : Live ETC 2: Hawkwind: Astounding Sounds 3: Robert Wyatt: Comicopera 4: Tangerine Dream: Ricochet 5: Siouxsie and the Banshees: The Scream 6: Kate Bush: Aerial 7: Soft Machine: Third 8: Throwing Muses: The Real Ramona
Because I would need some variety at least but 8 albums is afar too little:
9 would be The Ramones: I'ts Alive on standby in case one of the others gets injured.

1. Pink Floyd - Pulse (it has DSOTM and songs from various albums) 2. Camel - A Live Record (including Snow Goose and some great songs from their classic era) 3. Petrus Castrus - Ascenção e Queda (my favourite concept album and also because I wouldn't want to forget my language ) 4. Steven Wilson - The Raven 5. Supertramp - Crime of The Century 6. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 7. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 8. King Crimson - ITCOTCK Another that would be appropriate to the situation: David Gilmour - On An Island

Very true. It was Sergei Rachmaninov who said "Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music."

Can - Future Days Moody Blues - This is the Moody Blues (it's like 7 albums in one!) Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Worn Copy The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother Firesign Theatre - Dear Friends (cause I'd need comedy too) Carla Bley - Escalator over the Hill The Kinks - The Kink Kronikles
I could probably survive on a desert island with those, at least for a couple of weeks. Provided I also had access to food and water.

Boredoms - Pop Tatari 5. The Fall - Peel Sessions boxset (cheating, but hey) 6. Motorhead - No Sleep Til Hammersmith 7. Can - Tago Mago 8. Focus - 3
Ask me again tomorrow and half these would be replaced.

yep! Box sets are definitely cheating big time! But you reminded me no Fall in my list and that will not do> So i would add Hex Enduction Hour or the Peel Box Set too!!! Motorhead is good choice too for those moments for head banging on the beach.

Well if I have electricity to listen to said albums I would bring along zero albums and just make 8 to listen to while I'm there.

I just found the Fall Peel Box Set 2 days ago, and have been jumping for joy ever since. I considered putting some Fall on my list (I considered both Palace of Swords Reversed and This Nation's Saving Grace), but they just missed the cut.

just 2 days ago or so i thought of creating similar thread
 1. Metallica - S&M (is just HUGEE!! best and coolest bombast ) 2. Genesis - Lamb Lies Down.. (feels like home ) 3. Yes - Keys to Ascension 2 ( most touching...) 4. Petrucci & Rudes - An Evening With... (memories... ) 5. Leprous - Tall Poppy Syndrome (sometimes i want to feel my anger and scream at my inner deamons! plus this is just ultra! ) 6. Pineapple Thief - Variations On A Dream (just soothing and comfortable) 7. Karnivool - Sound Awake (party in the sands ) 8. Frequency Drift - Over (beautiful female vocals to fill the void^^) but i would probably switch at least 1 album for a decent progressive psytrance mix
