Basically just 8 albums you'd take to the "desert island" and why. In no particular order:

1. Genesis - Trespass (favourite album, 'nuff said)
2. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (something simple and reassuring)
3. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (also a fitting title, but very relatable and loving too, with some angry outbursts)
4. Buckethead - Look Up There (great album to look up to the stars at night time)
5. The Who - Quadrophenia (something a bit heavier, some great sea links, and most importantly 82 minutes long!)
6. Procol Harum - A Salty Dog (another album that would be reassuring and relaxing)
7. The Moody Blues - Days Of Future Passed (a bit of variation, nice to have some classical in there)
8. Iamthemorning - ~ (great to listen to on the beach, away from everything)

Other shouts for me include "Agaetis Byrjun", "Islands", "The Geese And The Ghost", "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Ommadawn", "Rock Bottom", "Zeit" and "Tales From Topographic Oceans".

As always, thanks for any feedback! Big smile

1: Gong : Live ETC
2: Hawkwind: Astounding Sounds
3: Robert Wyatt: Comicopera
4: Tangerine Dream: Ricochet
5: Siouxsie and the Banshees: The Scream
6: Kate Bush: Aerial
7: Soft Machine: Third
8: Throwing Muses: The Real Ramona

Because I would need some variety at least but 8 albums is afar too little:

9 would be The Ramones:  I'ts Alive on standby in case one of the others gets injured.

2. Camel - A Live Record (including Snow Goose and some great songs from their classic era)

4. Steven Wilson - The Raven
5. Supertramp - Crime of The Century
6. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
7. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
8. King Crimson - ITCOTCK

Another that would be appropriate to the situation:
David Gilmour - On An Island LOL

Very true. It was Sergei Rachmaninov who said "Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music."

I just found the Fall Peel Box Set 2 days ago, and have been jumping for joy ever since.  I considered putting some Fall on my list (I considered both Palace of Swords Reversed and This Nation's Saving Grace), but they just missed the cut.

It is although the production is a bit sh*t even for a live albumWink

I actually prefer Yesshows with superb renditions of Ritual and Gates Of Delirium.

I love both live Yes albums but the Yessongs by association I guess. No doubt YesShows a far superior production, but it was the 70's, crackles, hisses and skips were the order of the daySmile Quality was not a major.

Yes - Close to the Edge (my favourite album)
Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (my second favourite PF album, but I'm a bit more in their late 60s sound at the moment)
Discipline - Unfolded Like Staircase (one of my recent favourites)
Hamadryad - Safe in Conformity (a 4-star album for which I have a weak spot)
Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second (something different, #2 in my 21st century top 10)
Big Big Train - English Electric (Part One) (#3 in my 21st century top 10)
Echolyn - s/t (#1 in mu 21st century top 10)
Alejandro Matos - Freak (something different, a 4+-star album with some masterpiece content and a high potential to grow on you)

Can't help it, but I miss Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Gnidrolog, Magma and Deluge Grander in this list Cry.

In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
Music for 18 Musicians - Steve Reich
Selling England By the Pound - Genesis
Mirage - Camel
SMPT:e - Transatlantic
The Smile Sessions - The Beach Boys
Still Life - Van der Graaf Generator
The Sky Moves Sideways - Porcupine Tree
(enormous classical compilation)

Not necessarily in that order. I might have to ditch the Beach Boys in order to get Ravel because I doubt the compilation would have him. Oops, that's ten. I hid two in highly uncomfortable places, so I earned them.

See I don't get it.  I just don't get it. I'm anal I know but it just pisses me off.  You see there is a point to this thred.  Although, I can only assume as its not mine.  I think it's based on a radio show we have in the UK and probably other countries, where famous peope pick their favourite 10 records they would have if they were stuck on a desert island.

So then the OP is asking us to do the same. And of course its difficult, it makes you have to think about what you would want to listen to which records would stand the test of repetative play and what kind of mix you would want if you could only chose a few records.  Otherwise, its a totally pointless exercise of picking all your favourite discs and typing them out, only to act as some vanity project that nobody reads anyway.

So, really I would learn much more about you and your taste if you tried a bit harder and actually thought about it a bit. It would be much more interesting and I might even read your post.

Because it is based on Desert Island Discs, a BBC radio programme that has been running since since the 1940.

Over that 70+ year period there have been literally 100s of guests, each of whom have chosen exactly 8 records to take to their desert island. Not 7, not 9, not 40, not 800 but exactly f**king 8. In 1958 Aaron Copland was a guest on the programme and while he did choose one of his own records to take with him, he managed to whittle the extensive list of records that he undoubtedly liked to precisely 8 f**king records. Not 7, not 9, not 40, not 800 but exactly eight f**king records. David Bowie has been a guest on the show - he selected precisely 8 f**king records. Not 7, not 9, not 40, not 800 but exactly eight f**king records. Yehudi Menuhin was a guest on the programme - guess how many f**king records he chose... go on, have a wild f**king guess... did you guess 40? did you think he could only manage a list of 7 records? No. He chose 8 records, not 7, not 9, not 40, not 800 but exactly eight f**king records.

Well Cheesehouse! You need not be grumpy, the post was neither adamant or explanatory.  As far as "all" is concerned,  I have a list of 500 fave albums , not because I am vain but due to the fact that its been 47 years or so of collecting!

You need perhaps to revisit your Gruyere and get some chilled Tokay Aszu in your hands . That would make you way less bitter. As for Dean's obsessive use of the f**** word, he needs to be reined in by an Admin LOL

Ok, so people are going to list "Complete Works" as one album?  Really?  Just because the records labels are interested in selling you same music 100 times does not mean that counts as one album.

-King Crimson- In The Court of the Crimson King (a no brainer imho..)
-ELP- ELP (a seminal prog LP for me....another college favorite..)
-Beatles- Sgt Pepper ( tough choice since they did so many good ones before and after Pepper..)
-Neil Young- After The Gold Rush (played this over and over in college...still makes me wish I was Neil Young at times..)
-Steely Dan- Katy Lied   (c'mon..you knew The Dan had to be in there with a name like Dr Wu...Wink)
-Jethro Tull-Benefit ( people talk and talk and talk about TAAB and Passion Play etc, but this one has it all for me as a Tull album...)
-Caravan-If I Could Do It All Over Again... (tough choice there since I also adore the Hatfield albums but I heard Caravan first so...)
-Yes- The Yes Album (again people go on and on about CTTE and Relayer, but this one blew me away when I first heard it and still does today..........this one's for you Greg....you'll always be a Starship Trooper)

Damn pedants and their 8 only ...I didn't even get to name my favorite classical album....cough...Ralph Vaughan Williams....Fantasia On A Theme by Tallis...cough.

To be pedantic. It is not pedantry since the number "8" is central to the format of the radio programme and therefore not a minutiae of detail, nor is exceeding the said number a minor error in need of correction. It's like asking the genie for four wishes, you can try but you'll only get three. That's not pedantry, that's the genie rules. Just as you cannot feed 12 CDs into an 8 CD auto-changer, you can try but it's not going to work. That's not pedantry, that's the Sony 8 CD auto-changer maximum capacity. If you went on the radio programme carrying 12 albums then Kirsty Young would very politely explain the format of the programme to you and still only play eight of your selection. That's not pedantry, that's the programme format. Obviously inspired by that radio programme the OP asked for your 8 albums to take to a desert island and why, not 12, not 40, not 800, he did however set a precedent for listing additional albums that just missed the list for those would like to make mention of more albums than the prescribed 8. So if you want to give a shout-out to Ralph Malph and his Fantasia then do so.

However, to be pedantic - this thread is in a sub forum of the Prog Music Lounge and thus should ideally contain only Prog Albums, or to be more pedantic should only contain albums listed in the PA archive. That, after all, is the reason for this forums existence - to discuss the music listed in the database. Fortunately the thread police do not enforce this stipulation too rigorously (nor should they).

Whittlled down to 8 albums, these are my favorites, they are records I never tire of-"Life is short, but art is long."

I eliminated the classical choices from  my list, as Dean pointed out, this is part of the Progressive Music Lounge, so my list is all progressive choices now. (well, a couple of prog related in there)

I think Dean has messed up his own argument on this. If its based on the show then there is no requirement to stick to a particular genre. Naturally people will include mainly prog albums or albums listed on the site but now its a very confused. Can you include prog related or proto prog for instance?
Also if this was moved to General Music Discussions would you be able to include prog albums?!

My argument is unaffected - the "prog only" is a limitation of the lounge the OP created the thread in, not the format of the radio programme; the OP had already deviated from the show's format by stating "Albums" rather than "Discs" (originally "eight gramophone records", the show now limits this to "eight pieces of music"), but the OP still clearly states "just 8 albums".

If you look at how the lounges are organised on http://www.progarchives.com/forum/default.asp" rel="nofollow - the default index page , the PP and PR Lounge is not listed in a Prog Music Lounge, but as I said - the Admins do not enforce this policy too rigorously so it is only as confusing as you want to make it. If he had opened the thread in GMD then this limitation would not apply and the list could include any genre.

1. King Crimson-Red (Did I mention that it's my favorite album?
   Instilled within my soul)
2. Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here (After nearly 40 years, I'm frankly
still analyzing the thing. A wonderful follow-up to 'Moon)
3. Chris Squire-Fish Out of Water (You get Chris, Bruford, Moraz,
Hastings, orchestration, and so much more. So well recorded, too)
4. Gentle Giant-Interview (No, no hiccup here. A little silly in parts,
but it really flies when it needs to)
5. Yes-Relayer (Rick who?)
6. 801(Phil Manzanera)-Listen Now (This album has it all and sucks me in
no matter what portion of it I break into. But grab some good
earphones, lay back on your back with a good pillow, and listen to
it from beginning to end. Quite a journey!)
7. Timo Laine-Symponic Slam (Was part of 1975's best releases for my
money. Ahead of its time with its synthesized guitar and all. Love
   it)
8. Maxophone-Maxophone (An sonic treat that really mixes up some fine
Italian musicianship. The soft parts are a welcome treat that
balance the whole experience quite nicely)

No order here.

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (not my favourite, but I feel it'd be great in a lonely island)
Jethro Tull - A Passion Play (something whimsical and complex to keep the brain working)
The Beatles - Abbey Road (possibly my favourite album of all time, and not without a bit of prog!)
The Who - Quadrophenia (great concept album, and again, bit of prog mixed in)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (something to think about, as well as some great emotional tracks)
Camel - Moonmadness (again emotional and straight up beautiful)
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery (pretty much only for Karn Evil 9 and Toccata)
King Crimson - The Power to Believe (modern yet 70s; perfect for a tiny bit of nostalgia!)

Steve Hackett - To Watch the Storms
Steve Hackett - Beyond the Shrouded Horizon
Steve Hackett - Guitar Noir

Wilson is a volleyball of few words...

Grateful Dead - Dicks Picks 28
Nice lengthy Jams with a great setlist. If I coukd take only 1 Dead album it would probably be this one.

Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece
The Voice, the mystery, the moods, the fleece? Masterpeice.

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Tough choice between this and the Lamb. This album is like Englsih heritage.

Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
Priest and a bottle or whiskey...

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Phish - Live At The Roxy 93
This is the album where Phish suddenly made sence to me. Been a huge fan ever since! Sublime performance of Harry Hood.

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking
Sandy...

Crosby Stills and Nash - Self Titled
"Say, can I have some of your purple berries
Yes, I've been eating them for six or seven weeks now
Haven't got sick once
Prob'ly keep us both alive"

Played all of these to death, never tired of them!

Rush-Moving Pitchers (Because there is some kick-a$$ music on this album)
Pink Floyd-DSOTM (Stare at the night sky...and listen)
Led Zeppelin-III (Again, kick a$$ music)
Dream Theater-ToT (My one prog-metal album to thrash and air-drum to)
The Who-Who's Next (are you kidding me...!!)
Diana Krall-Live in Paris (Not much better female vocals than this..)
Prince-Purple Rain (Dude is musical greatness)
Earth, Wind & Fire - All n All (One of the best albums ever recorded)
Michael Jackson-Off the Wall (Pop music genius)

The last three albums to keep me happy, dancing and smiling..The last thing I want to listen to is depressing prog rock on an island by myself...

Why limit to 8? Just list a bunch

LOL

So ten albums then? Wink

Okay, okay, eight albums.

Four classics from the classic era:

Jethro Tull - "A Passion Play"
Genesis - "Selling England by the Pound"
Gentle Giant - "In a Glass House"
King Crimson - "Red"

Four modern classics:

Motorpsycho - "The Death Defying Unicorn"
Jaga Jazzist - "Live with Britten Sinfonia"
The Mars Volta - "De-Loused in the Comatorium"
Mastodon - "Crack the Skye"

I'll be kicking myself for not choosing something by Led Zeppelin, "Physical Graffiti" or "How the West Was Won" for example, but this thread is in a progressive music lounge after all. Wink

Simon and Garfunkel- Sounds of Silence (love of music started here)
ELP- Trilogy (first prog I'd heard)
Gentle Giant- In a Glass House
Pink Floyd- Atom Heart Mother
Genesis- Foxtrot
Penguin Cafe Orchestra- s/t (great instrumentals)
Jethro Full- Songs from the Wood (Sitting around fire)
King Crimson- Red (I've never heard it, so why not bring it along to an island?) Or would Islands be more appropriate?

I've changed my mind can I bring along another couple hundred?

Hatfield And The North - 1st (Canterbury masterpiece)
National Health - Of Queues and Cures (see above)
Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (all time top 5 album)
Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans (Yes, my introduction to prog music, this is nowdays their best one)
Jethro Tull - A Passion Play (no one can live without this)
King Crimson - USA (this band was always best in live)
Gentle Giant - Playing The Fool (always will love this band and especially this live album)
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per Un Amico (no way I could survive without something from Italy)

How does one do this? I'd break down in tears if I didn't have more than 100 albums on an island.

Genesis - Selling England (was going to pick Foxtrot but I already can play Supper's Ready, music and vocals, using my mouth so that would lose about half the album)
Gentle Giant - Octopus (the only album where every song is in my top 100 songs of all time)
Pink Floyd - Animals (so I can always remember what animal noises sound like)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists... (my night album)
King Crimson - Red (would've made my list even if Starless was the only song on it)
The Mars Volta - De-Loused (I can't even explain why. It's just perfect)
Jethro Tull - TaaB (the greatest 44 minutes in musical history)
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (The Holy of all Holys)

Would've chosen other things, but alas, this is a prog forum, not a music forum.
