A shame really...i have always overlooked genesis because of phil collins and have always tried to stay away from listening to this band and have only heard the most famous songs like Land of confusion, Dancing with the moonlit knight and i can't dance and so on. I actually only got the first genesis album on vinyl but that is hardly prog so i hope someone can recommend me a good first proper genesis album.

Foxtrot or Selling England By The Pound (especially the latter if you enjoyed Dancing With The Moonlit Knight). Be aware that Foxtrot's sound quality is far inferior to Selling...

All of Gabriel-era Genesis albums (except the debut) are great, also Trick of  the Tail  and Wind & Wuthering where Phil sings. If you like long epics, Foxtrot  featuring Supper's Ready will please you. Double concept album Lamb Lies Down on Broadway may not be the best place to start. My and many other's favourite is Selling England by the Pound  which has that Moonlit Knight you mentioned.

Hopefully I answered your question before seeing it.

I recommend Foxtrot, Trick Of The Tail, Nursery Cryme. Buy them in that order.

This is my list of Genesis albums that I would encourage anybody to get (in that order):

  1. Foxtrot/Nursery Cryme (Tie)
  2. Trespass
  3. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  4. Archives I - The Gabriel Years
  5. Genesis Live
  6. Selling England by the Pound
  7. Wind & Wuthering (Collins/Hackett era)
  8. A Trick of the Tail (Collins/Hackett era)
  9. Second's Out (Collins/Hackett era)
  10. From Genesis to the Revelation (Only for collectors)

I can live without the rest, and life would be better without everything after Duke.

This is a wedding invitation...

- Selling England By The Pound (the most omnicomprensive of their music);

- Foxtrot (IMO more complex, with the masterpiece Supper's Ready);

- Seconds out (the best live album of the era).

I think this is a good start.

Start with Foxtrot, then get Nuresry Cryme. If you like those; buy Selling England by The Pound. Then, get Trick of The Tail.

All four are masterpieces and probably their most acessible.

Wow, some differing of opinion here (surprise surprise!! )

Well, it might depend on what music you ALREADY like. For instance, I prefer symphonic prog such as Yes, Gentle Giant, Anglagard and Camel as well as the heavy prog bands like Rush and Kansas as well as modern stuff like Transatlantic and Shadow Gallery and if I were to recommend you a Genesis album, I would say start with Selling Enland by the Pound,  Nursery Crime or Trespass. If you don't like any or most of the groups I mentioned then you probably should start with Foxtrot or Trick of the Tail first (since those are my least favorites of the early Genesis albums).

Hope that helps!

Best of 2006 that I've heard:
PFM-Stati Di Immaginazione
Zenit-Surrender (Best "unknown" album)
Oaksenham - Conquest of Pacific
2007:
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
La Torre Del Alchimista - Neo

Foxtrot from the Gabriel era

A trick of the Tail from the Collins era

Both brilliant but very different albums.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Go for the fab trio of albums:

1. Nursery Cryme
2. Foxtrot
3. Selling England

in that order,for a start.
If you like it, then go get others too.

When I bought "Selling England ..." on vinyl  I went into the cellar room (at night), turned off all lights and listened to that strange mesmerizing sounds coming out of my stereo. It was a revelation. You won't be the same person getting up to the surface of normal life. Try it.

Then you need "Foxtrott" and "Nursery cryme". (wait a few weeks)

And then the masterpiece "The lamb lies down on Broadway".  (wait a few weeks). This album is not easy to get digested. But it's great.

"Trick of the tail" and even "Wind and wuthering" are reasonable Prog Rock albums with Collins at the microphone. But after that the decline to a pop band began. Not bad. But no compares to the earlier stuff. Just good pop music.

Enjoy the second best group of music history!

I highly recommend Seconds Out:

a) the song selection is incredible, and only from the Gabriel/Hackett era

b) the production and engineering is incredible, much better than the studio versions

I'd say get 'em all. The good ones are great! And even the bad ones aren't really complete wastes!
Marmalade...I like marmalade.

Trespass - This is the one to start with, then move up chronologically. That way, you'll get a true sense of Genesis's evolution.
