I was searching for topics on Chick Corea and found this.
I don't want to stir up any hornets nests, but I don't see any definitive response in the thread.
Chick Corea has some spectacular fusion albums under his own name, not just his electrik band or RTF. As does Stanley Clarke. Yet neither are listed as solo artists here. There are plenty of artists listed who are primarily jazz artists, who also ventured into fusion (Miles Davis is first to come to mind). Is there any specific criteria for including/excluding musicians like these?

You found a really old topic - Corea has been discussed more than that. Corea has roughly 3 or 4 full-fledged fusion albums - except Leprechaun, they're neither succesful, neither representative. I wouldn't put him in the Archives.

What's next; John Travolta and Tom Cruise? This is Prog Archives, not Scientology Archives! ;) Methinks I just got myself in trouble for steeping over a certain religious line. Apologies.
Anyway, I'm not that familiar with his solo work, but I would have thought there was a significant case for his inclusion based on his fusion work, but I don't know. Maybe not. So I shouldn't be posting at all. |

3-4 fusion albums should normally suffice for a good addition. what seems to be the problem, are these 3-4 albums only a part of a huge discography or something like that?

Wow I had no idea Corea was a part of that Scientology stuff. My respect for him is greatly diminished.

You can respect all the music he made, because nothing is related to Scientology, and most of it is extraordinary. I saw him in concert, and he didn't gave me no preach on Zulu aliens, he instead gave me a wonderful performance. So you can definitely respect Corea's music. Or you can judge hastly. |

I really don't understand what his allegiance to Scientology (or any other church, cult, or whatever, for that matter) has to do with his addition to PA... Either his music is suitable for the site, or it is not... Anything else is totally irrelevant, in my opinion.

Did I say I would boycott his music? Honestly if I threw out the music of everyone I didn't agree with I wouldn't have much of a collection left. |

This is a digression, but if it disrupts discussion about his worthiness for PA, and somehow delays the process, then I will desist.
I thought his musical works had links to Scientology. According to that wikipedia article I linked to before:
Anyway, I started talking about that with humorous intent. It's irrelevant to the addition, of course, but then it's up to the relevant team if they wish to vote for his inclusion based on whether they think the music has sufficient merits for the category. Such a digression should not affect any outcome, and I don't see how it could. Incidentally, I was fascinated by Scientology and studied it quite deeply years ago, so it's just a not so relevant interest of mine. Edited by Logan - June 29 2009 at 15:15 |

There are other factors slowing down additions, and you know it as well as I do. Incidentally, I was not commenting on your post, but on others I had seen in this thread. Just further proof that posting on this board has become next to impossible, unless one wants to get angry every time. |

I didn't even realize Clarke wasn't here.
School Days and Journey To Love are excellent and qualifying albums. Children Of Forever, less so. Corea's Elektric Band stuff was a bit of a snooze, but The Return To Forever solo album and My Spanish Heart are qualifying albums. Edited by Slartibartfast - June 29 2009 at 15:35 |

Personally, I don't find it worth worth getting angry about such things, so I don't, but we're all different. For me posting at this board is mostly about exchanging ideas and exploring notions.
EDIT to quote this since it got in before I saw it -- to get it back on-topic:

Also if like solo piano, Children's Songs on ECM is quite good, nearly classical in style.

No offence taken here, of course, DeathRabbit, and I hope you don't keep your opinions to yourself in any part of the site, and are willing to share them wherever your fancy takes you. Although this isn't really the place for a discussion about Scientology, it's an interesting topic. Incidentally, when someone leaves Scientology they are considered an "enemy", so that partially explains why Corea would have difficulty tolerating Clarke's departure. I used to have a better resource, but this'll do http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Game_(Scientology) It's a scary organisation, and though I respect Corea's music, I don't respect his church, or their principles.
Back on topic. I think that if Corea has several albums that would fit, that should be more than enough. If the JRF team don't want him, then he should at least be in Prog-Related, and I would endorse him there from what I know. |
