Civility. It seems to be increasingly rare in the wider world, and here on the Forums.

We all cross the line sometimes, and I'm no exception. Thus, when you post, the "Wink" Emoticon, and words like "Just kidding. No offense meant" it can go a long way toward sparing the feelings of others.

I listened to Floyd's DARK SIDE in its entirety today (first time in a long time), and these lines in particular, from the lovely "Us and Them," resonated with me:

"Up and down. And in the end, it's only round and round. Haven't you heard? It's a battle of words," the poster bearer cried. Listen son, said the man with the gun, there's room for you inside.... Out of the way, it's a busy day -- I've got things on my mind. For want of the price, of tea and a slice, the old man died."

So, let's all think before we post, remember that there's Private Messenger for comments and observations of a more personal nature (or just for dirty jokes, right Dude?Wink), and bear in mind, before you smugly condemn that which others hold dear, that anyone can destroy, but that it is much harder (and deserving of respect) to create.

Think of the human being behind the words or work, not just of the words or the work. Be careful what you sign your name to.

Thanks! I needed to say that!

SmileKeep proggin,' Keep a sense of humour, and don't be too quick to forcefully put down the things that your fellows hold dear. Debate is necessary and good, but please, keep it CIVIL! Ying Yang

Well said Peter.

The level of civility has really fallen the last two weeks.  Not to mention the level of the intelligence of the conversations in some threads.

Not too kind, eh?

Blimey!!! Are you talking about Sonja Kristina (hubbie Stuart Copeland, band Curved Air) ?????

I think that the overall tone has improved in the past couple of days!Clap

Hint to the select few (you know who you are): If your own writing is so grammatically-correct and error-free (no, mine isn't -- love that edit button!Embarrassed) that you simply MUST publicly correct another's spelling, don't!  Do so in a kindly, helpful manner via a Private Message.Smile

When you publicly chide another for spelling errors, you are BEGGING to have your own oversights (we all make mistakes here) pointed out! This is a prog forum, not a spelling bee!

If anyone needs an example of what Peter is railing against, you need go no further than the thread on 'Graphic Equalisers'......

Peter, I take my hat off to you for saying that which (I believe) many of us have been thinking & exchanging private e-mails about recently.

Tauhd - I hope you still read this forum & realise that a majority of us are able to express opinions without being self-opinionated (an increasingly rare trait), and your current (temporary, I hope) absence is mourned.

Please come back, Tauhd! We sometimes thoughtless males need your moderating, softening, and balancing female influence here!

You're right about civility!

But I don't get one thing... in which band was Tauhd?

To Tauhd herself: PLEASE COME BACK!

Yes Jim, I admit that I turned very UN-civil in that thread.  I apologize to the group.

But at the same time you have to admit that I was getting seriously trolled by someone who had no idea what he was talking about.  At least I didn't threaten anyone!
