Civility. It seems to be increasingly rare in the wider world, and here on the Forums.

We all cross the line sometimes, and I'm no exception. Thus, when you post, the "Wink" Emoticon, and words like "Just kidding. No offense meant" it can go a long way toward sparing the feelings of others.

I listened to Floyd's DARK SIDE in its entirety today (first time in a long time), and these lines in particular, from the lovely "Us and Them," resonated with me:

"Up and down. And in the end, it's only round and round. Haven't you heard? It's a battle of words," the poster bearer cried. Listen son, said the man with the gun, there's room for you inside.... Out of the way, it's a busy day -- I've got things on my mind. For want of the price, of tea and a slice, the old man died."

So, let's all think before we post, remember that there's Private Messenger for comments and observations of a more personal nature (or just for dirty jokes, right Dude?Wink), and bear in mind, before you smugly condemn that which others hold dear, that anyone can destroy, but that it is much harder (and deserving of respect) to create.

Think of the human being behind the words or work, not just of the words or the work. Be careful what you sign your name to.

Thanks! I needed to say that!

SmileKeep proggin,' Keep a sense of humour, and don't be too quick to forcefully put down the things that your fellows hold dear. Debate is necessary and good, but please, keep it CIVIL! Ying Yang

Well said Peter.

The level of civility has really fallen the last two weeks.  Not to mention the level of the intelligence of the conversations in some threads.

I think that the overall tone has improved in the past couple of days!Clap

Hint to the select few (you know who you are): If your own writing is so grammatically-correct and error-free (no, mine isn't -- love that edit button!Embarrassed) that you simply MUST publicly correct another's spelling, don't!  Do so in a kindly, helpful manner via a Private Message.Smile

When you publicly chide another for spelling errors, you are BEGGING to have your own oversights (we all make mistakes here) pointed out! This is a prog forum, not a spelling bee!

If anyone needs an example of what Peter is railing against, you need go no further than the thread on 'Graphic Equalisers'......

Peter, I take my hat off to you for saying that which (I believe) many of us have been thinking & exchanging private e-mails about recently.

Tauhd - I hope you still read this forum & realise that a majority of us are able to express opinions without being self-opinionated (an increasingly rare trait), and your current (temporary, I hope) absence is mourned.

Yes Jim, I admit that I turned very UN-civil in that thread.  I apologize to the group.

But at the same time you have to admit that I was getting seriously trolled by someone who had no idea what he was talking about.  At least I didn't threaten anyone!

We only know each other as electronic entities but even so I try to be as cordial as possible but at the same time try not to take something too too seriously. There could be a million reasons why she hasn't visited the forum lately maybe her computer is busted who knows. I'm pretty sure it is not because she was personally insulted by what  someone she doesn't even know said about her  in cyberspace. We all have lives beyond this forum and outside our common interest in this music, for me participating in this forum and writing the reviews is a form of great escapism and opportunity to hear other peoples attitudes towards music and other things which come up in the process. This is one of only 2 or 3 sites I visit and the only one I actively contribute to. From time to time I visit other similar sites just to check them out and you should see some of the viciousness, whoa! There are a lot of insecure people out there. As for the spelling, grammar etc. I really don't care one way or another as long as the person gets their point accross. I'm a math major so my writing skills are not the greatest. I think the people who's mother tongue is not English should be commended for the effort they make to make themselves understood in the English language as well. Well that's my two cents. I do hope the lady comes back soon.     Slainthe

I’m discovering this thread today…

I’m very sad

Very sad because I feel I gave Peter much pain.

I apologise…

Peter, if you read this or if one of your friends could report to you this I would like to tell you that my departure is not your fault.

Yes I’m a lady, an old lady but still with mood swings, my own problems, my own life, my own health…but a lady who appreciate your kindness, humour and knowledge.

You are one of the lights of the forum but unfortunately I also was offended by very few other members (in fact mainly one).

It is the first reason of my departure.

The second reason is my English.

It is very difficult for me to understand all that it is said here, very difficult to translate in English words what I have in mind, so very difficult to share…

It is very frustrating for me even I tried another way of expression with pictures…

Have you ever tried to see flowers with blind eyes, to walk on the beach without legs, to play music without hands ?

It is what I feel…

I should have preferred explain all these things in French but it is impossible as most people here don’t understand French.

I’m also sad because I feel that threads and reviews are now under censorship :

"This is an announcement from Progenetic Control : It is my sad duty to inform you of a 4ft. restriction on liberty of opinions"

"I hear the Directors of Progenetic Control declaring that it is now forbidden to give unfair reviews to famous prog-artists/bands (but it seems it is still possible with 90125, ABACAB or Love Beach). If you don’t share the same opinions than the majority they’ve been told you must go-go-go-go."

My friend : "but you are able to "hate what you want in a special thread but WARNING : all that you want except prog-artists/bands."

Me : "thank you for the information but how can it be possible to "HATE" music ? Dislike, yes but "HATE" ?

Don’t you think that "HATE" is the best fattening food for barbell-wires ?"

Sorry but music is just music, sometimes maybe art but never science.

Music is made to be heard and if we have to speak about music it is really possible to use words, but images too.

If you love somebody, how to express it ?

With a lot of analysis, arguments ? Have you to write a 500 pages thesis ?

No !

It is the same thing for music… and poesy : remember "The Pritchard Method" in the movie " Dead Poets Society " (Peter Weir).

Sorry for that

Maybe some jokes next

hello TAUHD(with the two dots)

when English is not your primary language it is no doubt difficult to comprehend the subtlties and nuances inherent in that languages modes of exspression.

i have read many reviews on this site by people whos first language is obviouslly not english and if i were so inclined i could easily make fun of the clumsy modes of expression and almost childlike phrasing in their comments. This is of course unfair as in their own language they could probably express themselves with an eloquence and intelligence that could shame the likes of me

on an international forum such as this where english is the language by default(which incidently has many expressions better interpreted in other languages vis a vi french!!) intelligent people will understand this and make allowances

just as many make allowances for my awful spelling

peter has left the forums for a while for a number of reasons just as you did(i myself have made few contributions of late for many reasons)

it is good that despite the language differences we can understand each other 9 times out of ten(although a cynic would argue it is that ten percent that is cause of the worlds problems)

and i am sure that Peter would be tickled pink to have you(the gracious lady of the forums) back again

as i am

I know what you're talking about. My my English grammar is ok, but my vocabulary is not very extensive and that's terribly annoying when I want to write a review. I try to express myself as good as possible in my reviews, but it's VERY hard!
