I am quite saddened by the lack of Battles on this site.
For those who do not know, the group is comprised of John Stainer (former drummer from Helmet,) Ian Willaims (former guitarist for Don Caballero,) Tyondai Braxton (son or nephew of avant-Jazz artist Anthony Braxton, not sure on which since I've heard conflcting reports,) and the former guitarist for Lynx, Dave Konopka.
The music is more or less rhythmic layering, where a rhtythm is introduced and more and more are added on top to create a fairly dense listening experience. However, it all grooves, is very danceable (not that that's important, but if you want to go for it!) and all around a good, fun listen.
They've released three ep's and are releasing an album later this month.
go there for a few of the tunes, see a video and see what you guys think.
Thanks and Take Care!

I'm a huge Don Cab fan and have been wanting to hear some Battles, so thanks for the taste, alan, looks like the EP C/B EP ones are good . Their sound is hard to place, maybe PostRock, though the 'ATLAS' track is more club music than prog. Good luck..

Glad to hear you liked them man. I've been on a big kick of these guys reccently, and can't get enough. Waiting for Mirrored (new album) is so hard! Sound-wise, I'd say they share alot more with the Math Rock crowd.

Great band,John Stanier was a big influence on me when I was younger and I when I first heard of Battles I was very excited to see he was in on it.They are pretty hard to pin down style wise. Experimental Post Math Rock?

I love Don Caballero, and Ian's guitar playing is awesome so I was pretty excited to see him doing something new, however sad that Don Cab was basically dead. The new Cab album wasn't very impressive. Granted Damon Che is a fantastic drummer, but the new guys don't have the feel and same oddness. They seemed more straight metal players doing math rock.
Anyways, the first time I heard Battles I wasn't impressed. Then I heard the new single and I was hooked for life. I've listened to it every week since. Then I went out and got Ep B. I can't wait for the album! |

I'm glad to be getting such a positive response from everyone with these guys.
Bro, I'd suggest grabbing EP C as well. It's just as, if not better than the B Ep.
Heck, get all their stuff, it's not a whole lot (unfortunatly.)

Well, Mirrored finally came out, and it's every bit as good as I thought it would be.
We really need to get these guys onto the site. Anyone know how to?

Can't say I like them much (assumption based on Mirrored only), but they definitly have quality to increase the ranks of Experimental/Post-Rock.

Pretty much, although Math rock as a genre apart could be nice... |

I enjoy them quite a bit, but the music isn't as dynamic as I like it to be. Some of their song sections go on for a bit longer than "necessary."

I remember already checking this band for Art Rock (there was a thread containing many bands and suggestions), and didn't like them or found them progressive enough. Atavachron on the other hand likes the band and may want its addition.
Of course, if the Experimental Team decides checking it up for their genre, that's out of Art Rock's league. |

Battles are much more than a math rock band...
They do deserve to be here in PA, but at the moment it's quite hard to put them under one of the existing genres in PA. |

I have no doubt Battles will eventually be here... if no new Avant categories emerge, they could still be put in either Avant or PostRock (at times they remind of Tortoise but with a more minimal sound and heavier guitar)

Certainly for adding them, Mirrored is a great, progressive album. Excellent use of sound, timbre, and experimentation.
With the limited genres, I'd probably say Experimental/Post Rock would suit them well because most bands similar to them on PA are there. |
