    Posted: August 10 2022 at 08:33
I really enjoyed the novelty of the previous Interactive Poll, but am aware that for many, the attraction of the interactive polls is being introduced to new music, of which much is often not even remotely prog.

So, because it seemed others enjoyed the twist on Interactive Polls for “our favourite prog of the seventies”, here’s a sequel of sorts. Only this time, any piece of music you put forward must have been released this year (2022), and does not need to be prog.at all!

Otherwise, the idea is the same. Please put forward four pieces of music that you particularly enjoy (from 2022), and we will each rank them in terms of our preference. These rankings will attract points thus: five points for the favourite, three for the next favourite, two for the next favourite after that, and one point for the least favourite.

At the end of all participants having put forward four pieces of music, and having voted for the pieces put forward by all other participants, we should be able to find the two most popular pieces of music for each participant - and these are the two which will go forward for final voting overall. Whether we have three, or more, votes will depend on how many participants we have.

I hope this will be as fun as the ‘70s iteration was!

Thinking if I have time to devote to this one.  Wonderful idea, Nick!

I also enjoyed the previous poll very much and this idea of continuation is great but it has two inconveniences (at least for me and for this particular time period):
- it is very time consuming, because everybody has to listen to all the four suggestions put up (and not just the nominated songs) and rating them also takes time;
- I'm not sure if I have even listened to four 2022 prog albums (I've listened quite some other 2022 albums, but with prog I have a built in delay, somehow...).

I'll try to participate, but cannot guarantee I'll get to the end in time...

It does not have to be prog, though. Not one of your four has to be prog! None!
Your selections can be as prog or not as you like.

OK, I have an unexpected bit of extra time in between judging stints at Friday Night Progressive's IPA Awards show.  And I love to bring forward lesser-known artists.  So here we go, some of my faves so far this year, some prog, some not.  Two are artists that I've featured on my Nickie's Niches show on Progrock.com, two are upcoming on this month's show.

First up will be Returned to the Earth's White Room, from "Fall of the Watcher"

Second is Ana Alcaide with An Mah, from "Ritual"

Third is Mary Fahl's interpretation of a Judy Collins song, Since You've Asked, from her newly released "Can't Get It Out of My Head"

Lastly, will be Midlake's Bethel Woods, from their January release "For The Sake of Bethel Woods."

@Nick, this brings us back to the present, which is good news for me! I'm quite up-to-date on the 2021 releases of the genres that interest me. I'll have to take a look and see if there's anything more recent in my collection. I'm a little worried, though, whether the corresponding videos already exist on youtube.

As for the voting system, I think it's a bit too time-consuming tbh. In the previous poll, although we had plenty of time, barely more than half of the participants have voted, esp. in the final voting round. But I'm still in favour of sticking to the idea that everyone should have two nominations.

Out of competition.

Black Midi: 27 Questions (Album: Hellfire, 15/7/2022)

_________________

Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul: Thank You (Album: Topical Dancer, 4/3/2022)

Pupul and Adigéery are both artists in their owen right. Topical Dancer is their debut album as a duo.- They first met while working on the soundtrack of Belgica, a 2016 drama film, directed by internationally renowned Belgian film director Felix van Groeningen. The soundtrack for Belgica was written by Soulwax, a Belgian electronic music duo who also co-wrote and produced Pupul's and Adigéri's debut album.

The two artists are based in Belgium and share Creole cultural roots which explains the thematic content of their work which is i.a. influenced by experiences of social discrimination.

Lalalar: Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi (Album: Bi Cinnete Bakar, 6/5/2022)

Lalalar is a three-piece band from Istanbul. Their debut album is just like their city, a kaleidoscope of influences from the East and the West in equal measure - psych-rock, electronics and funk, laced with samples from old Anatolian records.- The lyrics translation is included in the video descritpion. It's worth reading btw.

Brandt Brauer Frick: Step (EP 2022; album 2023)

Brandt Brauer Frick are an experimental techno project from Wiesbaden, Germany. The project is based on sounds from classical music instruments, which were initially sampled and later performed live in a ten-person ensemble.

Chassol: I figli morti (Morricone) [6/7/2022]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFpFk73MONo
Sorry, I couldn't post this link for some reason.

French musician and composer Christophe Chassol has masterfully reinterpreted the classic "I figli morti", composed by Ennio Morricone for the soundtrack of the 1971 film "Giù la testa" (eng. Duck, You Sucker). Originally released as a short version on the "Ennio Morricone Film Music 1964-2015 Vol.II" box set, the previously unreleased long version is being released for the first time on the anniversary of the maestro's death.

I am on holiday and in my residence there Is no wifi.

The line Is not good so I dont know if I Will be able ti partecipe . But I try

Anyway

@nick

This scheme Is very demanding.

Advices:

1) what do gyou think tò propose 3 songs and then choose the One with the highest score?

2) what about tò extent the choices tò the 20's? (2020; 2021;2022)?

This poll is too restrictive for me... I'll pass.

I also don't have much time these days. I liked the last one as a one off, but generally I prefer the old system with one nomination per participant and optionally more suggestions that we may or may not listen to. The topic is great though.

Okay, if it weren't for the fact that my tastes have finally caught up with the present (only took about half a century), I might not have participated in this. There are so many others I would like to include, but these are among the first to come to mind.

Perfume Genius - Teeth (off the album Ugly Season)

YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence (off a.k.a YAYA)

Current 93 - There Is No Zodiac (off If a City Is Set Upon a Hill)

Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage (off Personal Message)

This is my ranking of Nickie's (Snicolette) offerings. It wasn't easy as they offer different things. I like the variety and it took several listens and I still could go differently, but here I am.

    1. Mary Fahl's "cover" of "Since You've Asked" (5 points)
    2. Ana Alcaide - "An Mah" (3 points)
    3. Midlike Bethel Woods - "For The Sake of Bethel Woods" (2 points)
    4. Returned to the Earth - "White Room" (1 point)

Mila: I don't know many albums in PA from 2022, but I do know black midi's Hellfire. I like the track.

George: I really enjoyed all of those. Kikagaku Moyo I have heard a fair amount of, and I very much enjoyed that. It's between that and S.G. Goodman's Teeth Mark for my personal top spot. I really like both in different ways, and I was considering going with Teeth Mark at one time (maybe there will be "Teeth" and "Teeth Mark" in the poll) but I will go with KM's for the groove with the raga qualities. It also is hard to choose third position, but (I say while wiping the sweat off my back since I hate being licked) I'm going with Spooky Cool.

1. Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue (5 points)
2. S.G. Goodman - Teeth Mark's (3 points)
3. Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back (2 points)
4. we broke the weather - Fire Season (1 point)

Thanks for the feedback, Greg! Yes, I thought that most of you guys here would know Black Midi, that's why I marked it as 'out of competition'. It's their latest album, though it was released last month. What do you think, should I leave it at that?

Just to start, and I will add more later, but these first two were those I thought of immediately...

Yôkaï - Ledeberg  (from the album Coup de grâce):

Mondkopf - Continuation (from the album Spring Stories):

And then a more conventional prog track. The album will not necessarily end up as a favourite of mine, but it is good. And this also a kind of homage.

Big Big Train - Proper Jack Froster:

And a last one to shake you up a little. A very nice retro psych-y disco funk album, wonderfully uplifting and very contagious. I never liked disco, but you'll probably won't believe me...

Lisa LeBlanc - Pourquoi faire aujourd'hui:

I will post my rankings when all 4 of whichever choices are up for each entrant, as I am judging those against each other, whether they are similar or widely vary.  Here is my first thoughts/rankings of Greg's entries.

Greg:  Perfume Genius - Teeth (off the album Ugly Season)  Plinky keys and quavery voice, very airy and light.  Soft orchestration with string and flutes.  So light and gossamer, it might never land.
YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence (off a.k.a YAYA)  Plinky keys, but of a different sort.  More jazz than faerie, sultry female vocal.
Current 93 - There Is No Zodiac (off If a City Is Set Upon a Hill)  Keys again, but again different.  Male this time.  Strings add to the melancholia and sense of having survived a terrible experience.
Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage (off Personal Message)  Keys again, this time another airy French-ish tune.  Sung in French and English.  Goes more rocky than the rest, with electric guitars and orchestra strings/flutes, love the ending with all of the strings

All have what I think of as the "Greg sensibilities," of other-worldliness and melancholia.

1) Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage (5 points)
2) YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence (3 points)
3) Current 93 - There Is No Zodiac (2 points)
4) Perfume Genius - Teeth (1 point)

Thoughts/ranking George's selections:

George:  S.G. Goodman - Teeth Mark's Acoustic-y Americana Guessing her lover was named Mark.  Feeling of early morning, both lyrically and instrumentally, almost like old acoustic psych often was.

we broke the weather - Fire Season  And now for something completely different.  Wailing guitars ala Crazy Horse.  Post-rock vocals.

Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue  Whanging repetition, but subtle whanging.  Whispery female vocals, with Shaft-y guitar.  Hypnotic.  Sitar jam part

Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back  More modern indie rock feel here

Always an eclectic mix from you, George.  Often hearkening to acoustic, even when electric (if that makes any sense), but not always.

1)      S.G. Goodman - Teeth Mark's (5 points)

2)      Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue (3 points)

3)       we broke the weather - Fire Season  (2 points)

4)      Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back (1 point)
