Subject: Interactive Poll: 2022 Favourites, so far!
Date Posted: August 10 2022 at 08:33
I really enjoyed the novelty of the previous Interactive Poll, but am aware that for many, the attraction of the interactive polls is being introduced to new music, of which much is often not even remotely prog.
So, because it seemed others enjoyed the twist on Interactive Polls for “our favourite prog of the seventies”, here’s a sequel of sorts. Only this time, any piece of music you put forward must have been released this year (2022), and does not need to be prog.at all!
Otherwise, the idea is the same. Please put forward four pieces of music that you particularly enjoy (from 2022), and we will each rank them in terms of our preference. These rankings will attract points thus: five points for the favourite, three for the next favourite, two for the next favourite after that, and one point for the least favourite.
At the end of all participants having put forward four pieces of music, and having voted for the pieces put forward by all other participants, we should be able to find the two most popular pieces of music for each participant - and these are the two which will go forward for final voting overall. Whether we have three, or more, votes will depend on how many participants we have.
I hope this will be as fun as the ‘70s iteration was!

I also enjoyed the previous poll very much and this idea of continuation is great but it has two inconveniences (at least for me and for this particular time period):
- it is very time consuming, because everybody has to listen to all the four suggestions put up (and not just the nominated songs) and rating them also takes time;
- I'm not sure if I have even listened to four 2022 prog albums (I've listened quite some other 2022 albums, but with prog I have a built in delay, somehow...).
I'll try to participate, but cannot guarantee I'll get to the end in time...

It does not have to be prog, though. Not one of your four has to be prog! None!
Your selections can be as prog or not as you like.

OK, I have an unexpected bit of extra time in between judging stints at Friday Night Progressive's IPA Awards show. And I love to bring forward lesser-known artists. So here we go, some of my faves so far this year, some prog, some not. Two are artists that I've featured on my Nickie's Niches show on Progrock.com, two are upcoming on this month's show.
First up will be Returned to the Earth's White Room, from "Fall of the Watcher"
Second is Ana Alcaide with An Mah, from "Ritual"
Third is Mary Fahl's interpretation of a Judy Collins song, Since You've Asked, from her newly released "Can't Get It Out of My Head"
Lastly, will be Midlake's Bethel Woods, from their January release "For The Sake of Bethel Woods."

@Nick, this brings us back to the present, which is good news for me! I'm quite up-to-date on the 2021 releases of the genres that interest me. I'll have to take a look and see if there's anything more recent in my collection. I'm a little worried, though, whether the corresponding videos already exist on youtube.
As for the voting system, I think it's a bit too time-consuming tbh. In the previous poll, although we had plenty of time, barely more than half of the participants have voted, esp. in the final voting round. But I'm still in favour of sticking to the idea that everyone should have two nominations.

Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul: Thank You (Album: Topical Dancer, 4/3/2022)
Pupul and Adigéery are both artists in their owen right. Topical Dancer is their debut album as a duo.- They first met while working on the soundtrack of Belgica, a 2016 drama film, directed by internationally renowned Belgian film director Felix van Groeningen. The soundtrack for Belgica was written by Soulwax, a Belgian electronic music duo who also co-wrote and produced Pupul's and Adigéri's debut album.
The two artists are based in Belgium and share Creole cultural roots which explains the thematic content of their work which is i.a. influenced by experiences of social discrimination.
Lalalar: Hiç Mutlu Olmam
Daha Iyi (Album: Bi Cinnete Bakar, 6/5/2022)
Lalalar is a three-piece band from Istanbul. Their debut album is just
like their city, a kaleidoscope of influences from the East and the West in
equal measure - psych-rock, electronics and funk, laced with samples from old
Anatolian records.- The lyrics translation is included in the video descritpion. It's worth reading btw.
Brandt Brauer Frick: Step (EP 2022; album 2023)
Brandt Brauer Frick are

Chassol: I figli morti (Morricone) [6/7/2022]

Sorry, I couldn't post this link for some reason.
French musician and
composer Christophe Chassol has masterfully reinterpreted the classic "I
figli morti", composed by Ennio Morricone for the soundtrack of the 1971
film "Giù la testa" (eng. Duck, You Sucker). Originally released as a
short version on the "Ennio Morricone Film Music 1964-2015 Vol.II"
box set, the previously unreleased long version is being released for the first
time on the anniversary of the maestro's death.

Okay, if it weren't for the fact that my tastes have finally caught up with the present (only took about half a century), I might not have participated in this. There are so many others I would like to include, but these are among the first to come to mind.
Perfume Genius - Teeth (off the album Ugly Season)
YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence (off a.k.a YAYA)
Current 93 - There Is No Zodiac (off If a City Is Set Upon a Hill)
Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage (off Personal Message)

This is my ranking of Nickie's (Snicolette) offerings. It wasn't easy as they offer different things. I like the variety and it took several listens and I still could go differently, but here I am.
1. Mary Fahl's "cover" of "Since You've Asked" (5 points) 2. Ana Alcaide - "An Mah" (3 points) 3. Midlike Bethel Woods - "For The Sake of Bethel Woods" (2 points) 4. Returned to the Earth - "White Room" (1 point)

I may put in some notes later.
1. S.G. Goodman - Teeth Marks
2. we broke the weather - Fire Season
3. Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue
4. Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back

Mila: I don't know many albums in PA from 2022, but I do know black midi's Hellfire. I like the track.
George: I really enjoyed all of those. Kikagaku Moyo I have heard a fair amount of, and I very much enjoyed that. It's between that and S.G. Goodman's Teeth Mark for my personal top spot. I really like both in different ways, and I was considering going with Teeth Mark at one time (maybe there will be "Teeth" and "Teeth Mark" in the poll) but I will go with KM's for the groove with the raga qualities. It also is hard to choose third position, but (I say while wiping the sweat off my back since I hate being licked) I'm going with Spooky Cool.
1. Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue (5 points) 2. S.G. Goodman - Teeth Mark's (3 points) 3. Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back (2 points) 4. we broke the weather - Fire Season (1 point)

Just to start, and I will add more later, but these first two were those I thought of immediately...
Yôkaï - Ledeberg (from the album Coup de grâce):
Mondkopf - Continuation (from the album Spring Stories):
And then a more conventional prog track. The album will not necessarily end up as a favourite of mine, but it is good. And this also a kind of homage.
Big Big Train - Proper Jack Froster:
And a last one to shake you up a little. A very nice retro psych-y disco funk album, wonderfully uplifting and very contagious. I never liked disco, but you'll probably won't believe me...
Lisa LeBlanc - Pourquoi faire aujourd'hui:

I will post my rankings when all 4 of whichever choices are up for each entrant, as I am judging those against each other, whether they are similar or widely vary. Here is my first thoughts/rankings of Greg's entries.
Greg: Perfume Genius - Teeth (off the album Ugly Season) Plinky keys and quavery voice, very airy and light. Soft orchestration with string and flutes. So light and gossamer, it might never land.
YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence (off a.k.a YAYA) Plinky keys, but of a different sort. More jazz than faerie, sultry female vocal.
Current 93 - There Is No Zodiac (off If a City Is Set Upon a Hill) Keys again, but again different. Male this time. Strings add to the melancholia and sense of having survived a terrible experience.
Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage (off Personal Message) Keys again, this time another airy French-ish tune. Sung in French and English. Goes more rocky than the rest, with electric guitars and orchestra strings/flutes, love the ending with all of the strings
All have what I think of as the "Greg sensibilities," of other-worldliness and melancholia.
Spooky
Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your BackMore modern indie rock feel here
Always an eclectic mix from you, George. Often hearkening to acoustic, even when
electric (if that makes any sense), but not always.
1)S.G. Goodman - Teeth Mark's (5 points)
2)Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue (3 points)
3)we broke
the weather - Fire Season(2 points)
4)Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back (1
point)

Mila: If you mean only mention the black midi, then no, I would love to hear your other choices (be they three others or four if it surely is out of contention). And I see nothing wrong if you want to include it even if it is fairly well-known at the forum. And I won't always discount the known, nor will various others who have participated. I bet there are plenty around here who haven't heard it, but I suspect that a significant percentage of those who participate in this poll will have heard it.
^^ Thanks very much, Nickie. Well said. While otherworldly melancholic music tends to resonate with me and is commonly what I focus on, I might try to being some down-to-earth cheerful music to the Interactive proceedings in the future. I know there must be some cheerful music that doesn't depress me.
While we are comparing the four, it helps for me to have time and days to absorb music, and to play it while in different moods (very blue or not so very blue), so on that blue note (sorry, my sad little blue humour had worn thin even before I mentioned it):
Kees: Yôkaï - Ledeberg. This was superb! It hooked me immediately and held me throughout. Ahhhh, this must be one of my very favourites during the whole competition. Love! Following such a superb opening act, I might have expected to be a little let down by the closer, but I thought that Mondkopf's Continuation was truly wonderful too. To me those two choices worked so well together. I am very happy to have listened to those. For the purposes of this poll I would favour Yôkaï as the nomination of these two.

And I will be off for a couple of days, so I won't be able to listen to all suggestions put up so far before Tuesday or so, but... I'll be back!
@Greg: Thank you for your comments; glad you liked those first two. The Yôkaï album Coup de grâce is very good, so I can recommend it. I was however not as impressed as with their first album, which is even better, IMO. And I'm not really surprised that you also like Mondkopf, with its cinematic qualities...

Thoughts/Ranking of Kees' selections:
Kees: Yôkaï – Ledeberg Spagetti-Western-y guitars
with steady electronic beat. Sax solo. Would make good soundtrack music. Catchy.
Big
Big Train - Proper Jack Froster First one I’ve known in this set.Love this piece, esp the storyline.Nostalgic. Well crafted, accessible (not
always a bad thing).Still saddened by
Longdon’s death.
Lisa
LeBlanc - Pourquoi faire aujourd'huiBouncy, sassy, sarcastic.Dance
tune with twists.A bit infectious.
Wide ranging taste, which I’ve come to know from your
selections over the (now) years (! Yep, Lorenzo debuted the Interactive Polls
on 16 May, 2020).
1)Big Big Train - Proper Jack Froster (5 points)
2)Mondkopf – Continuation (3 points)

point)

^^ Thanks Kees, I will see about listening to Yôkaï's first album in full and then Coup de grâce. And yeah, I do like those cinematic qualities. One of the first soundtracks I fell for was Moroder's Midnight Express, which has disco qualities in the pathos-evoking main theme. Speaking of disco (as a seemingly forced segue perhaps), I enjoyed Lisa LeBlanc' "Pourquoi faire aujourd'hui" very much. I unabashedly love plenty of disco and music with disco qualities. Your first two will be my top two still, with LeBlanc in third, and Big Big Train being the caboose, and pourquoi pas?
1. Yôkaï - Ledeberg (5 points) 2. Mondkopf – Continuation (3 points) 3. Lisa LeBlanc - Pourquoi faire aujourd'hui (2 points) 4. Big Big Train - Proper Jack Froster (1 point)

One thing I love about doing the polls this way is that not only does it lead to more interactivity for all of the participants, but I do love to compare things and look for patterns. It is interesting to me to see how one user ranks a set compared to another user and compare each user's votes on different sets.
While only two of us have started with the voting, here are the results so far (Nickie's ranking followed by mine with each user's list of four songs, except with Nickie's where she didn't rank her own except perhaps in how she ordered them to some extent).
For George's list:
1) S.G. Goodman - Teeth Mark's (5 points) 2) Kikagaku Moyo - Dancing Blue (3 points) 3) we broke the weather - Fire Season (2 points) 4) Spooky Cool - I Lick the Sweat Off Your Back (1 point)

Nickie ranked my list:

I might rank my own list:
1. Perfume Genius - Teeth (5 points) 2. YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence (3 points) 3. Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma_The Voyage (2 points) 4. Current 93 - There Is No Zodiac (1 point)
I might add more of the rankings to this post later if not deemed a bad idea.

Interesting idea to compare, Greg. I actually didn't present mine in my own order of ranking, which for me would be hard. It was actually hard to pare down to just 4, I could have done 8-10. I did try to vary the "set" if you will, however, similar to a show set.

Hey Nickie, good to see you back here.
The leader among your selections for me was Midlake's "Bethel Woods". The driving piano under the vocals worked for me. It became harder with the remaining tracks as it was comparing different styles. I went with the contemporary prog stylings of Returned to the Earth, followed by ethnic sounds of Ana Alcaide, and then mary Fahl. For whatever reason, I didn't think of either Midlake or Returned to the Earth as American bands. So,
Midlake - 5 pts
Returned to the Earth - 3 pts
Ana Alcaide - 2 pts
Mary Fahl - 1 pt

Greg, ranking is tough. It often depends on my at the given time. As with Nickie's selections, I took a few repeated listens. Melody's Echo Chamber took the lead with her take on dream pop. I can feel that summery haze of that picture shown in the video. Then it was between YAYA Kim and Perfume Genius for the third spot. Gave the edge to Perfume Genius, so:
Melody's Echo Chamber - 5 pts
Perfume Genius - 3 pts
YAYA Kim - 2 pts

Kees - So, I know Yôkaï from the Interactive Lesser Known Prog Poll from last year. In fact, I got that first album because of it and wasn't aware of this new one. I picked up several albums from that poll. I looked it up, and it was progaardvark that suggested it. He didn't nominate it but nominated a track by Cerc, who I also picked up.
I liked the new (to me) track. I did look at the video once and I am not sure I can make sense of it but I liked the animation.
Big Big Train is a band I've liked for a while starting with The Underfall Yard and the English Electric recordings. I particular like the English Electric: Full Power compilation with its great packaging and photos. I liked the subsequent albums but felt they mined a lot of similar territory. I haven't given the most recent two albums a listen, but this is a solid (yet familiar sounding) track.
I gave the edge to Monkopf for it's exotic quality.
The Lisa Leblanc track was fun. I do like my funk, but a track does have to go fourth.
Yôkaï - 5 pts
Mondkopf - 3 pts
Big Big Train - 2 pts
Lisa LeBlanc - 1 pt

Nickie and Greg, thanks for comments and rankings. Appreciate it.
Nickie, I do get your acoustic/electric comment. i think, inherently, a piece of music I like can be good without the enhancements of being electric. But I do like it sometimes when things get noisy.
While I am commenting, I have been enjoying your podcast and it's been a good source of new music. i may have missed one or not completely listened to another, but i have either bought or wishlisted several things from that. I am waiting for Bandcamp Fridays to return next month.
in regards to how I listed my tracks, it went from the ones I heard first in 2022 to the most recent. So, here are some notes on my suggestions.
The S. G. Goodman track was an advanced release to her second album, which came out in June. I had first heard material from first album (2020 release) last year and was taken by her voice and the genuine quality to it. Some really great tunes on that first album and I'm just getting into her second. Amazon let me know when Teeth Marks came out. Interesting history as she grew up in rural Kentucky (daughter of a sharecropper) and is gay. There is a story of how every year growing up, her father would plant corn for his children so they can harvest and sell in order to buy new school clothes (after contribute to the church tithing). A lot of her songs are rooted in her personal hardships and what she saw coming from that part fhe country. She still resides Kentucky.
we broke the weather is a new band and their debut album came out in February but i came across them on Bandcamp sometime in March or April. A modern prog band with influences from bands current bands like the Dear Hunter (who has a new album out) and Thank You Scientist, as well classic prog like King Crimson and Yes.
All the artists I selected from are relatively young with Kikagaku Moyo the oldest, having formed in 2012. Unfortunately, it seems like this is their last album and are currently on a farewell tour. I first came across them about two or three years ago with their third album House in the Tall Grass. The only artist of my selections on PA, the most an album has is 15 ratings with only one review.
Finally, Spooky Cool I've mentioned before in the What's New Wit You Interactive Poll. They only have one EP from 2018 before releasing a single a month on Bandcamp since June leading up to their full length debut this fall. The track I posted is from July. I follow them as they are one of the only local bands of interest. Their most recent single came out yesterday and features their other vocalist. As a bonus for anyone interested,
It would be hard to rank my favorites, but I think it would go in order of how I listed anyway. The S. G. Goodman track ha stuck with me since I first heard it. I think we broke the weather is in my top 20 prog albums for 2022 as of now. They should be on PA.
I do have a couple of other loved tracks (albums) that might be considered better known and were on the long side. Just to give them mention, Primus - Conspiranoia (11+ minutes) and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - The Dripping Tap (18+ minutes).

Lorenzo, if you'd like, I can try and find your selections and upload them for you. The theme is just for this one year, you did have one that you'd marked as 2022, and I did find it, if you'd like me to do that.

Great extra info on your selections, George. And many thanks to you for listening! Yes, Bandcamp Friday does return this next month.

I did answer, just not in this thread, I have no problem with you not playing by the rules. It’s not different than if I had in the last poll decided I was unable to find four prog songs from the ‘70s, so came up with some non prog songs from the ‘70s. I’ll still give your submissions a listen, as I am always happy to listen to what you come up with, but for me they will not be part of the poll, so I will comment on them, but not rank them. That’s just me, though, so I have no problem with others considering them part of the poll, and ranking them. I will put them up in the final poll, too, so that others who don’t mind not keeping to the OP can vote for them. 🤗

Ok, here is the first part of my rankings, covering th first page of this poll only.
Nicky
Ana Alcaide (five points)
My favourite, and if not for Midlake, by a large margin. I love the instrumentation and the vocals. The melody is quite beautiful, and almost impossibly becomes even more so when the harmony kicks in. Wow! Just, wow! I love this!
Midlake (three points)
Only just pipped to the post by Ana Alcaide, but these two are so far ahead of the other two, that it seems almost wrong for them to be allocated points so close in value. Honestly, without even hearing any other submissions, I already feel like two of my vote for the final poll have been sorted! I love the strong, almost math rock, insistent beat to this song, and the way it dominates and leads the song, rather than the quote subdued and understated vocals (which I also love).
Returned to Earth (two points)
Read so much about this album, and all has been glowing. First I’ve actually listened, and I really like the music, but the vocals aren’t so pleasing to my ears. Reminds me a little of the debut Bardic Depths album (I’ve not yet listened to this year’s), where I found the music really interesting, but struggled a little at first with the vocals. It’s not that the vocals for Bardic Depths or Returned to Earth are bad (at all), so much as they don’t sound, to my ears, a particularly good fit. I do like this a lot, though, in spite of the vocals.
Mary Fahl (one point)
Even though I’ve never heard of Mary Fahl, I expected to enjoy this, simply because I pretty much never don’t enjoy Nicky’s offerings. It started out very promisingly, too. But I just can’t get on with the vocals, and as they are pretty much the focal point of the song, it’s hard to get past that. I won’t go so far as to say I dislike the song, but it’s definitely, and easily, my least favourite.
Mila
Lalalar (five points?)
Obviously there is one track yet to come, but whatever it is will have to good to displace Lalalar and the Adigéry & Pupul tracks. There’s not a great deal in it between them, but I’m inclined to give Lalalar the edge. The subverted motorik rhythm combined with all the Eastern flair is addictive and earwormy.
Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul (three points?)
Oh yeah, as above, I really like this one. Not that it particularly sounds like any track from The Adults’s second album, it does remind me of it. And I love that Adults album.
black midi (two points?)
I am familiar with the band, of course. black midi’s album of last year was easily one of my favourite releases from 2021. However, I’ve not yet listened to the new one, so this track is new to me (even if the band is not). I thought it would be my favourite, simply because I know I already love the band. But, perhaps because it is simply out of context (I’ve never listened to a single black midi song before, having only listened to the albums), or perhaps because it’s simply not as impressive, I find it is definitely lacking in comparison to the other two offerings (so far). In a way, that’s handy, as I don’t generally like to vote for artists I’m familiar with, and with this track, I don’t think I would be.
(to be continued…)
Greg
YAYA (five points)
It was really hard to choose between this and Perfume Genius. Too simply gorgeous songs soaked in ethereal beauty and haunting melody. While they are quite different in sound, they share a lot in atmosphere and aesthetic.
Perfume Genius (three points)
As above.
Melody’s Echo Chamber (two points)
What an appropriate name, as the vocals seem to have a subtle echo effect that gives a padded wall of sound I’m happy to bounce off, wrapped comfortably in a straitjacket whose constraints match perfectly the restraint in the performance. This is one chamber you can confine me too. Go ahead. Close me in, and throw away the key.
Current 93 (one point)
Somewhat akin to black midi, with Mila, I expected to like this more. I am familiar with, and a fan of, Current 93, but have not yet listened to this year’s album. Again, like black midi, it’s not a case of not liking this, so much as being impressed more by the other offerings.
George
SG Goodman (five points)
Perfume Genius had teeth, but SG Goodman leave teeth marks. There’s an awful lot of similarities I could draw between those two tracks, and what I like in both is the same. If anything, SG Goodman has more bite, which perhaps explains why this track is teeth marks, rather than Perfume Genius’s teeth. I described Perfume Genius as ethereal, haunting and atmospheric, and SG Goodman is all that, too, but with extra edge and tension. I like it. A lot.
Kikagaku Moyo (three points)
I kind of don’t want to rank this so highly, especially after what I wrote about black midi and Current 93, but dammit - even if I am familiar with, and a fan of, this band, this is damn near irresistible! It’s sad that this is their final album, but at least they’re going out with a bang(ing tune).
We Broke The Weather (two points)
Well the weather definitely seems broken over here in the UK. Temperatures rarely dropping out of the 30s, and even hitting 40 (which might not be unusual in other parts of the world, but is VERY unusual - pretty much unheard of - in the UK); no rainfall, leaving us in almost unprecedented drought with everything tinderbox dry. It’s certainly fire season, and there have been no end of wildfires. You probably couldn’t even fart in the countryside without starting a fire. Nice groove, if not as explosive or incendiary as I expected from the title. More of a slow burn, but a very pleasant one.
Spooky Cool (one point)
Just as there is little to separate my top two from your selections, there is little to separate my bottom two. The only real difference is between the two pairs, as I do enjoy the first two waaaaaay more than these two. But there’s not a dud here, and I could quite happily listen to any of these again.
Kees
Yôkaï (five points)
I really like the way this track builds. It grabs me from the start, and just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It’s an easy favourite out of your four.
Mondkopf (three points)
It’s a much harder task to find second place, as while I thought it would be a foregone conclusion (before listening to the final two) that Mondkopf would take it with this quiet and exotic number, the louder and in your face Lisa LeBlanc song is a lot of fun, and I liked it as much as I did this. I’m giving this the edge purely on the assumption that it has longer legs than Lisa, and would give me greater enjoyment over time.
Lisa LeBlanc (two points)
Honestly, I really, really, really like this (and I’ve never been a fan of disco, disliking far more than I like). It’s a really fun track that I could easily have put in second place, but I just wonder if I would enjoy it as much after hearing it a hundred times. I’m not sure about that, but I do think I would still enjoy the Mondkopf on the hundredth play through.
Big Big Train (one point)
I have never really liked Big Big Train. I have liked the odd song, but never more than that, and certainly never enough from any one album to want to buy it. There are a couple of albums I like enough songs to almost consider buying, but I’d rather spend my money on something I enjoy entirely. This isn’t even one of those songs I like.

Ok, after much thought and deliberation, here are my four. None are actually particular favourites from this year, but I d9 very much like all four. I decided to try and keep to bands and artists who are not on PA. As it happened, all are from albums I have either already reviewed for TPA, or that are in my review queue. There were a couple of other songs I would have considered, but although they were not in PA earlier this year, they have been added since.
- Mario Lino Stancati (Torna a Sparire)
- Cola de Zorro (Tanu)
- Boris (Beyond Good and Evil)
- Kalandra (Mørke Skoger)

Thanks so much, yours is a terrific post all around. We had a "snap" with Kees' choices, I could as easily vote the same with my choices and feel very much the same as you have expressed, and actually I feel very much the same with your comments on George's selection. And you make me want to re-examine Nickie's music.
And yes, you can hear how apt Melody's Echo Chamber is. I think I posted another track for an earlier Interactive poll from MEC's 2012 album (the first song I heard of MEC) -- sad I can't remember for sure. "Endless Shore".
That YAYA Kim album, by the way, is quite something. It's about two hours and 22 minutes with 33 songs. The cover image of her plays up on her sexiness and beauty, and the music can be very sultry, but she is very talented arranger, musician, singer, songwriter and producer, I think. a.k.a YAYA so far is my album of the year. It does have jazzy trip-hop Portishead qualities at times and I am very big on Portishead.
This is the opening track from the album, Anger Is My Power:
Or as PiL would put it, "Anger is an energy." (from the song Rise)
And thanks to George for the playlist.

MN ranking of Nick's choices based on first listen (possibly I may change rankings with subsequent listens and I will listen to all again). I think my order would be the same as you listed. The top two both could be top for me, with Boris surely in third. This is quite different from the more noise-y Boris that I know. I especially really appreciate those first two tracks equally in their own ways.
1. Mario Lino Stancati - Torna a Sparire (5 points) 2. Cola de Zorro - Tanu (3 points) 3. Boris - Beyond Good and Evil (2 points) 4. Kalandra - Mørke Skoger (I point)
Again. subject to change as that is based on but one listen to each track.

Yes, I pretty much listed them in my order of preference, so I find it cool you have agreed with that order. The Boris track is from W, which was a companion piece to NO, and is definitely not one of Boris’s noise albums. Here is my review, for what it’s worth:

The YAYA is very sultry, for sure, and very reminiscent of Portishead. I don’t know if they were an influence, or if both bands just had shared reference points. Both songs you’ve posted now are great.
Likewise, both Melody’s Echo Chamber songs. I don’t recall this other one you may (or may not) have posted before, but that doesn’t mean much at all, as post-covid my memory is incredibly poor.
I’m definitely enjoying this poll, as it is great to celebrate in what’s new, rather than revel in what’s old. Not that I have a problem at all with looking back, but I think I am predisposed to look forward. 🤷🏻♂️

Thank you for the mini-reviews, nice to see the thought process. It's interesting to me that your lower two are more because of vocals, as I really love both of these vocalists (in fact, I do love all of these vocally, even though I often choose instrumental music for my personal listening). The lyrics to both have great meaning for me as well, but of course, each person brings their own experience to listening. I particularly love Mary Fahl's voice, as it is not light and airy and not soprano (although that doesn't bother me as a listener, it just is refreshing to have an alternative to that).

Thoughts/Rankings on Nick's choice:
Nick:Mario Lino Stancati – Torna a sparire.Menace and tension.Makes me think of sounds in space (not space
rock).Definitely fascinating
sonically.
Cola
de Zorro (Tanu) And switch to a band sensibility, this time with a
math/post/rock feel.Lovely ringing triplets
on guitars or keys, actually can’t tell which. Then some whanging guitars.
I also always have high expectations with your selections,
Nick. And was not disappointed, however,
I did like some more than others. Really
want more of my #1 here.
1)Kalandra (Mørke Skoger)(5
points)
2)Boris (Beyond Good and Evil) (3 points)
3)Mario Lino Stancati – Torna a sparire (2 points)

Thank goodness! I included the Kalandra track just for you, so I’m glad you enjoyed it, I do very much like Kalandra. Of course, they are on the By Norse label, who pretty much do it for me every time! Other great releases from that label this year, that I almost used for this poll include Nanna Barslev, Nebala, Jo Quail, and Sowulo.
My review of Kalandra’s album, if you didn’t read it at the time (since I know you do tend to read my TPA reviews):
Their debut is great, and I love the two reworked tracks that they released as stand alone singles between the two albums. They also released a teaser track ahead of this album, which was not included on the album - possibly because it was more of an actual song, and may not have fitted or flowed so well.
Another album I very almost included a song from, that I think you would have appreciated (and which is name your price on Bandcamp) is Flow. It’s a beautiful album!

Thank you for all of the recommendations! Will look forward to checking them all out! And will enjoy reading your review.
You were spot on with Kalandra!

Lo Stato Sociale, "Combat
pop" (2021) Rock N Roll sound, sarcastic sort of sounding vocals. Not just the video guy’s size, but reminds me
of a Meatloaf song.In video, kids all
enjoy it when the band members show their real faces.
Here you have again been true to yourself, Lorenzo, choosing
from your (as I think of it) Italianate tradition and tossing in a modern rock
piece. They all have a sense of high
drama to them, as I have come to expect from what you have shared with us over
these years.

This is a quite hard one as I don't normally explore new stuff systematically, rather randomly (and then new stuff for me is often up to 5 years old). Adding to that, a pretty big part of my 2022 favourites are so long that for sure they're inappropriate for this game. (If you're curious, check out the recent releases by Weserbergland, Pan Daijing, Svarte Greiner, Fossil Aerosol Mining Project.)
The task to go through all the other things will help me big time exploring 2022 music, so great topic, but I have basically no time these days so no idea when I can manage this.
The ones I found for my list are pretty good though, if weird and experimental.
Lucy - Wanton Witch 2 (from "Lucy Plays Wanton Witch")
Laura Veirs - Seaside Haiku (from "Found Light")
So Sner - Animals Will Help (from "Reime")
Red Snapper - Tarzan (from "Everybody is Somebody")
PS I hope that nobody started listening to these and evaluating them straight away as I replaced Jameszoo by Laura Veirs half an hour after posting, to give you at least some melody.

I have updated the playlist to include Lorenzo's and Christian's selections.
There should be 31 tracks. Note that for Lucy - Wanton Witch 2, I used another posting of yhe same video because the original one is mislabeled as a kid's video so it can't be added to any playlists. I have had this happen before, but not in quite some time.

For Lewian's (Christian) entries:
I did listen to all you originally chose, and already had an idea, but that's okay, more to hear.
I liked all, but I did just plain enjoy Red Snapper - Tarzan the most. Number two comfortable goes with Lucy - Wanton Witch 2. The other two I appreciate about as much in different ways.
1. Red Snapper - Tarzan (5 points) 2. Lucy - Wanton Witch 2 (3 points) 3. So Sner - Animals Will Help (2 points) 4. Laura Veirs - Seaside Haiku (1 point)
I know I still have Mila's music to listen to and Lorenzo (although I don't really want to consider non-2022 things for this TBH). Maybe I can do the next poll and do 2012-2021.

I am not able tò go tò internet. There Is no wifi here and the line,It depends on the wind. Two years ago Ive got the same problem and Raff posted the YouTube links tò my Song, but in that case I could choose what I wanted. Now, about the songs of 2022: I know the Black Midi album and the Italians songs 9f the Sanremo Festival. But possibly or surely I know other songs, but I cant control 8f they have bene published this year. For exajplr, After a Ling research,nI disvovered that El Greco was published this year, (I was not sure)
But in other case Internet doesnt help me.
I am writing from an old bad tablet and the line could fall in any moment
So I suggest some Song of the last 2 years.
And Nick, about the last poll: I accepted a Song taken from the Prog related category

Got a first moment to spend some listening time; things will come in stages...
Nickie: A very gentle selection overall. Sometimes that works with me, but sometimes it leaves me a bit underwhelmed. I'm between these two, now... White Room by Returned to the Earth is meandering a bit too gently through mellow pop territories to these ears, without an extra twist. I like the sonic quality though. With Ana Alcaide we have another subdued song more in the realm of folk and traditionals. Wonderful duo of voices mixing celtic and Middle Eastern, which makes this quite nice, but it is not moving me beyond that. Mary Fahl is enchanting me because of her wonderful voice, but she leaves me wanting for more. With Bethel Woods we are with an up-tempo song, somehow very poppy too, but it has an interesting jazzy piano underneath it all. Each of these four tracks has its distinct quality which makes them very interesting and makes it into a pleasant listen, but none of them provokes a "wow-effect" (or something similar) with me - other than maybe Mary Fahl's voice, but I would want to hear it with another song.
Number 1 and 4 are clear to me, 2 and 3 could be the other way around: Midlake - Bethel Woods: 5 points Mary Fahl - Since You've Asked: 3 points Ana Alcaide - An Mah: 2 points Returned to the Earth - White Room: 1 point
Mila: I listened to the Black Midi album Hellfire, which I found a bit too mannerist to entirely convince me. A good listen, though. A single track is maybe the best way to get into them, because 27 Questions is really great, mixing something King Crimson like with a theatrical/musical (music-hall) style approach. I very much like the spoken/half-sung vocals. Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul adopt the musical playfulness of a Laurie Anderson with a very modern sound and mixing of styles. Intriguing. With Lalalar: Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi we continue in the realm of electro with a Turkish flavor, but maybe a bit more conventional sounding because of the beat, which I'm not fond of. I'm not a fan either of sequencer dominated electronic music, but Brandt Brauer Frick do generate something fascinating. But from these three electronic offerings I prefer the Belgium one. Which would be competing for number one spot in case Black Midi is maintained. I'll wait with my points till Mila has her definite four.

Thank you for your thoughts, Kees. I perhaps have been in a subdued mood of late, lol. There are much more rocky tunes on Mary Fahl's release, where you hear more of her power, however that particular song is sentimental to me, and I never in a million years thought anyone would cover it.

Mila's choices
1. Brandt Brauer Frick - Step (5 points) 2. Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul - Thank You (3 points) Was a nice change of mood from some other people's choices 3. black midi - 27 Questions 4. Lalalar - Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi (1 point)
I really love the Brandt Brauer -- my clear favourite and one of my faves in this round. I enjoyed Thank You considerably. I almost put Lalalar in third place, but I think I would need some more acclimation. As for black midi, I knew the album, but it still has not fully clicked with me I feel.
Lorenzo, I understand your issue, and I have bent or overlooked the rules before to accommodate people (with you too when I set as a rule not to nominate for the poll if you plan not to listen, and to warn me in advance, and you then said during the voting phase that there were too many songs to listen so chose not to vote, but I kept yours in -- no big deal, things happen, is just an example. But a big part of the fun for me in these polls is working within the limitations, and making exceptions can be a very slippery slope. I might not be able to participate in every one even if I want to, and A Plague... decided not to participate because it was too limiting. That said, I'm not saying you should not mention those or that people should not consider them, and I wouldn't tell the poll starter how he should treat that. By the way, that Paul Conte was released in 2021 according to my brief research.

Charlotte
Adigérie & Bolis Pupul: Thank You Sarcastic deadpan lyrics with a sort of
electronic/acid repeating backdrop to the vocals.Commentary on artistry/commercialization.
Lalalar:
Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi Electric Middle Eastern beats and sounds, definitely
up my alley as far as musically. Not as
thrilled with spoken/rap-type vocals in general, but the repetitive
instrumental parts I quite enjoy.
Brandt
Brauer Frick: StepElectronic piece with
lots of whirrs and plonkies (I know, my terminology), repeating the basis and
adding on in layers.Hypnotic.Ends a bit abruptly.
Very cutting edge from you, Mila, as I’ve come to expect
with your selections. All very
intriguing and very modern.
1)Lalalar: Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi (5 points)
2)Charlotte Adigérie & Bolis Pupul: Thank You

3)Black Midi: 27 Questions (2 points)

Red
Snapper – TarzanLive action this
time.Avant jazz here, sax to the
fore.Repetitive beginning, goes into
another sort of groove, slows for a few moments, then back to it.Title fits the track.
Nice varying set from you, Christian, with the cutting
edge industrial, toss in a bit of jazz and an quirky tune. As always, thank you for helping my brain get around these kinds of pieces.
1)Red Snapper – Tarzan (5 points)
2)Laura Veirs - Seaside Haiku (3 points)
3)So Sner - Animals Will Help(2 points)

Lorenzo, why don't you just enjoy your holidays? If you won't be back until the end of the month, as you said earlier, you won't be able to vote in the preliminary voting anyway. But you can still listen to the tracks in the final selection and vote, whenever that may be.

Thoughts/rankings of Lorenzo's revised selections, all are now 2022 pieces.
Lorenzo:Mahmoud
and Blanco: BrividiI like the washy
guitars in the beginning and the piano here throughout.A bit of a staccato vocal, nice
harmonies.A bit of anguish in the tone,
yet hopeful, very current sensibilities.
Elisa: O Forse sei tuSounds more contemplative here, beautiful
female vocals and piano.A classic
ballad feel to the piece, triumphant.
Achille Lauro: DomenicaVery modern, yet hearkening to some of the
80s rockers a bit to my ear.Well-crafted hit-type song.

Chassol: I figli morti
(Morricone) Laid back jazz feel
to this one. It does gain a bit of
intensity, but mostly stays in the same groove.
1)Lalalar: Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi (5 points)
2)Chassol: I figli morti(Morricone)(3 points)

I have the original and I really like that version of the Maestro Morricone. It feels/ sounds so fresh and vibrant. I think I'm still keeping my number one, but that could easily be in first place too. Great homage, sans fromage! (i.e. not cheesy as some covers are not that I dislike cheese). A real treat for me, thanks.
1. Brandt Brauer Frick - Step (5 points) 2. Chassol - I figli morti (3 points) 3. Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul - Thank You (2 points) 4. Lalalar - Hiç Mutlu Olmam Daha Iyi (1 point)

Mila: Your change makes my points distribution a bit easier, because I'm actually quite disappointed with Chassol's interpretation of Morricone's piece: it takes out all of the dramatic tension and irony that is in the original to turn it into a gentle jazzy tapestry, IMHO.

Greg: Great selection! I recognize your predilection for atmospheric music. I've just one problem: I love the music of Current 93, but have never been able to enjoy their vocals/singing style. Same here. The other three are wonderful, each in it's own right, so the ranking of the first three is rather arbitrary.
YAYA Kim - Providence of Providence: 5 points
Perfume Genius - Teeth: 3 points
Melody's Echo Chamber - Alma, The Voyage: 2 points

George: A very enjoyable selection indeed, all four! But I was actually most pleasantly surprised by We broke the weather's Fire Season with it's unexpected changes of pace and tone, where it starts of as what could become an "ordinary" rock track. I'm very much charmed by the voice and the emotion of S.G. Goodman, which is why I put her second, followed by Kikagaku Moyo and Spooky Cool, the latter being maybe the most conventional one, but still very enjoyable.

Nick: Of your selection Boris is the only one that didn't really convince me: I don't like her whispering voice/singing style and the "let's tick some post-rock cliché boxes" with the guitar wall of sound lacks originality, IMHO. The other three however are wonderful and ranking them is difficult. I love that soundscape thingy and the electronic aspect of Mario Lino Stancati, the rocky hypnotism of Cola de Zero and the folky and angelic dreamscape of Kalandra. All three very atmospheric. So, these three could be on a spot of the other, but here it goes:
Cola de Zorro: 5 points Mario Lino Stancati: 3 points Kalandra: 2 points (but they deserve more...) Boris: 1 point
Christian: Oh no, not those experimental things again... Lucy brings us some industrial experimental sample thingies, a kind of Einstürzend Kraftwerk, with some funny elements. I also like Laura Veirs very much; makes me think a bit of Rozi Plain, but more on the indie side than the folk side. Great sonics. With So Sner we are more in the electronic experimentation and this is my favourite of yours (love this one!), because I'm a bit disappointed by the Red Snapper track which is a bit too "lazy" on the composition side, to my ears.
So Sner: 5 points Lucy: 3 points Laura Veirs: 2 points Red Snapper: 1 point

Lorenzo, I think you've sent your musical mind on holiday too; how dare you. Go confess, since it's Sunday (this is not for me). Irama is a bit better again, but we're still very much in Eurovision Song Contest territories.

Elisa has a beautiful voice but nothing else. Mahmoud hmmm He won the festival with Blanco, and in the 2019 (Mauro Pagani ex PFM was the artistic director) he won alone... unbelievable! Two times! I Guess he won because black Muslim and gay (no coming out until now) I cant stand him.
And what about Achille Lauro?
Guccini, talking about him, said: Is he the new Singer songwriter? When I was young I didnt Need tò show my ass tò sing
PS Ok the Melody of Elisa and Irama's songs are not bad
------------- Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Been listening over the past few days.
Mila:
For me, the top spot was clearly Brandt Brauer Frick. Got a bit more difficult for the next. I liked them all but different. But took Lalalar just over Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul. Liked the quirkiness and overall enjoyed Charlotte Adigéry as my streaming app at one point started playing other videos from including a concert. By default, Chassol ended up last but I enjoyed, in particular at about 3:30. Up until then it was a bit too 'relaxed'.
