 Topic: What’s the best intro to prog?

If this has been done before (I tried the search but couldnt find anything) give me the link  But anyways, what's the best way to introduce a friend to progressive music? Nobody I know likes prog so I need a few converts  What artists/albums/songs etc. would you recommend?

Close To The Edge, SEBTP, Octopus, SFAM, Dark Side usually do the trick

Floyd is really lite prog so thats a good start. The best way to introduce people to prog is however with a J in hand  . They will never go back!!!!

Pink Floyd, and a selection of mid period Genesis tracks..
Be careful to point out - with nerdy commentary - all the 'really good bits' as they come up in the music. Explain the concept of odd time signatures and state that anyone who doesn't like prog is a complete imbicile. Basically make them feel they will be regarded as more intelligent if they like prog. Tell them also they will be more attractive to women. By the time they work out that this is bullsh!t it will be too late and they'll be hooked..hopefully..

I would suggest the more melodic prog like Camel, BJH, mid-Genesis, Supertramp and not prog like Close to the edge or Tarkus becasue of the complexity. In fact most people need a bridge to discover prog is my experience. Unfortunately my wife is scared of bridges..!

Say pick three albums to start? I'd have Dark Side of the Moon and
Selling England by the Pound. Much as I love Close to the Edge I'd see
their reaction to the other albums first.
I'm tempted to recommend you play something more recent just to show
its not all stuck in the 70's, Dream Theater I suppose or (bit more
radical) Tool's Lateralus if they're into heavier music.

The best way to introduce friends: Barclay James Harvest for melodic prog sound; Strawbs (From The Witchwood) or Jethro Tull (Minstrel In The Gallery or War Child) for folk-prog; Camel (Moonmadness or Snow Goose) for symphonic prog.
Not to start with more complex sounds...agree with you Erik!
P.S. success is guaranteed! My girlfriend now loves BJH, Strawbs and JT (she even came to the italian JT live show!!!).

I started with PINK FLOYD - ANIMALS
also with SANTANA - i know its not considered prog, but it belongs to the same period and could easily lead to prog.

I generally play people 'Awaken' by Yes as an intro, because many people seem to take to the track ...no wonder; it's superb!!
