If this has been done before (I tried the search but couldnt find anything) give me the link

But anyways, what's the best way to introduce a friend to progressive music?
Nobody I know likes prog so I need a few converts
What artists/albums/songs etc. would you recommend?

Close To The Edge, SEBTP, Octopus, SFAM, Dark Side usually do the trick

Floyd is really lite prog so thats a good start. The best way to introduce people to prog is however with a J in hand. They will never go back!!!!

Pink Floyd, and a selection of mid period Genesis tracks..

Be careful to point out - with nerdy commentary - all the 'really good bits' as they come up in the music. Explain the concept of odd time signatures and state that anyone who doesn't like prog is a complete imbicile. Basically make them feel they will be regarded as more intelligent if they like prog. Tell them also they will be more attractive to women. By the time they work out that this is bullsh!t it will be too late and they'll be hooked..hopefully..

I would suggest the more melodic prog like Camel, BJH, mid-Genesis, Supertramp and not prog like Close to the edge or Tarkus becasue of  the complexity. In fact most people need a bridge to discover prog is my experience. Unfortunately my wife is scared of bridges..!

Say pick three albums to start? I'd have Dark Side of the Moon and Selling England by the Pound. Much as I love Close to the Edge I'd see their reaction to the other albums first.

I'm tempted to recommend you play something more recent just to show its not all stuck in the 70's, Dream Theater I suppose or (bit more radical) Tool's Lateralus if they're into heavier music.

Rush-moving picture

IS RIGHT CHOICE IMO

The best way to introduce friends: Barclay James Harvest for melodic prog sound; Strawbs (From The Witchwood) or Jethro Tull (Minstrel In The Gallery or War Child) for folk-prog; Camel (Moonmadness or Snow Goose) for symphonic prog.

Not to start with more complex sounds...agree with you Erik!

P.S. success is guaranteed! My girlfriend now loves BJH, Strawbs and JT (she even came to the italian JT live show!!!).

This is what NOT to do.

But it usually ends up happening anyway.

I started with PINK FLOYD - ANIMALS

also with SANTANA - i know its not considered prog, but it belongs to the same period and could easily lead to prog.

Camel
Genesis
Pink Floyd
will be good for the beginning - try but it's rather hopeless because I'm testing further step on my wife and daughter and it doesn't work

I generally play people 'Awaken' by Yes as an intro, because many people seem to take to the track ...no wonder; it's superb!!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Yes - Fragile

or

Yes - The Yes Album

the albums aren't as progressive as Yes gets, but they really show a good deal of what prog is about. After listening to those two albums, i was inspired to delve into prog further and further.

The best intro to prog is easily In the Court of the Crimson King,  if whom ever doesn't like it on some level then that person will never like prog.

Try Porcupine Tree - In Absentia if they´re into pop/heavy rock
Jethro Tull - Aqualung if they´re into classic rock
Dream Theater - Scenes from a memory if they´re into Heavy Metal
Karmakanic - Wheel Of Life if they´re into jazz
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon if they´re random music listeners

Thanks for the great ideas,
I'm trying to put together a sampler so far this is what I've got

Porcupine Tree-Trains
Yes-Heart of the Sunrise
Yes-Close to the Edge (I dont like putting it in here without the rest of the album though)
Camel-Lady Fantasy
King Crimson-In the Court...
Pink Floyd-SoYcD (1-5) (maybe a little much?)
Radiohead-Paranoid Android
The Mars Volta-Roulette Dares

I tried to mix some recent stuff in with the classics...I need some help picking a Genesis, Gentle Giant, and JT track though...

There is no "best intro to prog." I was raised on Van Halen and Metallica. My introduction to prog was first Dream Theater at a very young age, then Rush, and soon after Yes and Pink Floyd. See how things change? If I would have grown up with jazz or perhaps classical music, I wouldn't have immediately enjoyed Dream Theater and Rush.

For Genesis, try get em out by friday, the knife or dancing with the moonlit knight (IT works fine too)

for Tull, Aqualung, the song or Locomotive Breath

Isn't it obvious?...

I'd also suggest CTTE, DSOTMSEBTP... you know... the usual picks.

I'd replace "In The Court..." with "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "Roulette Dares" with "Drunkship Of Lanterns".

But, that's just my taste.

Good job, though.
