 Dear proggers,

I’d like you to help me. I want to record one CD to introduce a friend to Prog music. It should contain accessible but representative and interesting songs to make her feel curiosity and continue exploring. I have thought of some songs:

·         School – Supertramp

·         Cast a pebble – ELP

·         Hocus Pocus – Focus

·         Carry on wayward son – Kansas

·         Wish you were here – PF

·         Time and a word – Yes (from Yessongs)

·         Firth of Fifth – Genesis

·         Starless – King Crimson

…Could you please help me? Thanks!

I would ditch Supertramp altogether and for Yes maybe have "Roundabout" (suggested elsewhere!) or "Yours is No Disgrace" as a starter.  Mind you your selection is very much toward the symphonic type pf prog. Could stick a Zappa track in there for variety (says he listening to Hot Rats at the mo...) - try "Peaches En Regalia" as a shorter tune.

Pretty good start, but I'd also skip the Supertramp.

I don't think Time and a Word is on Yessongs, you could go for Roundabout or Perpetual Change.

How about something from Rush Farewell to Kings?

Also you could throw in some recent stuff from IQ, Pendragon, Glass Hammer etc.

If they're a young person, maybe throwing some Porcupine Tree or Mars Volta would be a good idea, as it may not be too far from what they are accustomed to. Throw some new stuff in any way; it may make prog more appealing if the person knows its still alive and well rather than some old fart music that died long ago.

Personally I would avoid 'Hocus Pocus'

I have yet to meet anyone outside the progosphere who thinks that yodelling is in the least bit funny. They think it's ridiculous and that grown men should know better.

I reckon Sylvia or House of the King would be better.

I often make some CD to introduce people to prog, and in my experience, you better make it classic.

When you are into prog like us, you tend to like more complex song or group, like Dancing with the moonlit knight, supper's ready or Roundabout (this one not complex but long).

You better make it safe. Like Long distance runaround, I know what I like, etc. No 20 minutes songs.

And wait for a second CD to introduce Van Der Graaf, and other "pure" prog band. It's not for virgin ears.

To fit the subject: I tried to do that and could not on 1 single CD. Too many things. I chose a 5 CDs format following chronological order from pre-prog psychedelia to early neo prog with a mix of Symphonic, Jazz-influenced, Canterbury, "Kraut".... No epics. Just mid size songs.

I am now working on an extensive sort of anthology. I already compiled material for over 30 CDs. It's a nice and funny job to do since it forces to listen carefully, to balance, to compare, to check what fits best next.
