Topic: How do you usually listen to prog? Posted: July 09 2015 at 00:01 |
When you listen to a prog rock album, how do you listen to it? In the dark? Do you occupy your mind while you listen? (Like by reading or playing solitaire). Do you just lie down and listen?
As for me, I usually listen in the dark under my bed covers.

Solitare….. With Headphones….. Prog is a music best not shared, but rather, enjoyed alone

I must admit that I usually do several things while listening to prog or other music, for example visiting websites, reading or writing something.
There was a time when I would boil myself a pot of tea, turn off the light in the kitchen and listen and sing along to my Genesis selection tape. Back then I had a teapot warmer with perforated walls, so I could watch the light dancing on the wall when the flame of the tea candle was moving. It was my ritual. I also used to lie on my bed in the darkness, listening to a Bruckner symphony.

Mostly while reading, drinking some coffee, eating some chocolate. The good life
When some really good part comes by, a passage that make my hairs stand out, I put the book aside, get up from my chair and I dance around the room to the beat of the music... when I'm sure there's nobody who watches me

The majority of the time it's on my own, with my good pair of Sony's.
As mentioned in a previous thread, I have a thing for surrealism art, and the two go hand in hand for me.
90% of the time when I'm listening, I'm working on something, however. I do a lot of online work and writing, so it's very convenient to get some Yes or Genesis going to bring about the flow of productive work .

Mainly by myself, when I'm alone. In the car while driving too, but not my favorite way to do it, since I cannot pay full attention to the music, same when I'm at the computer.

Same way I listen to all other music, various ways.
Most of the time it's either in the car or alone in my room, there's nothing like blasting Gentle Giant in the car.

Sometimes while doing something else (reading, Internet, or whatever), sometimes just sitting and listening. Always whole albums.

Very, very loudly. O n vinyl, in my music room, in a comfy chair, with a glass of top quality real ale carried out from my local pub.
I listen to the whole album from start to finish.
The other way is on the cassette player in my car (and the CD multichanger if the garage that bust it ever gets working again!).

Usually through headphones or in the car, on my own (singing along when I can), although driving with my prog-loving husband is a great time to listen and discuss the music. We usually hear different things in songs - he focuses on drumming in particular and the music in general, while I tend to pay attention to the lyrics. I just realized, for example, that with all the times he's listened to Going for the One, he never once heard the self-mocking verse in the middle ("Now the verses I've sung don't add much weight to the story in my head so I'm thinking I should go and write a punch line/But it's so hard to find in my cosmic mind so I think I'll take a look outside the window") and now he's delighted to have discovered it, while I now understand more about unusual time signatures.

Downstairs in my listening area, sitting and usually reading along with the lyrics, 90%+ of my media habit is vinyl so I pay attention. When working at my desk I will do digital player on shuffle or reel to reel tape

Sometimes I need to chase the grand kids out of the room without hutring their feelings so I'll play Blind Lemon Jefferson 78's on something like this:

On a boat with a goat, in the rain on a train, in a box with a fox, in a house with a mouse, in a car with a czar, in a yard with a bard, in the fog with a frog, on the earth for what it's worth, and in a chicken coop while doing a poop.

I listen most of the time alone, and I don't do anything physical or mental, just sit quietly, close my eyes, and enjoy! Same procedure for classical music. Sometimes, I listen with a close friend of mine, and again, just sit with eyes closed and sit quietly.

Either on my laptop with some good quality Shure headphones , in my car in the cd player, or in my stereo room on custom loudspeakers and Sony cd player or Onkyo turntable.
