When you listen to a prog rock album, how do you listen to it? In the dark? Do you occupy your mind while you listen? (Like by reading or playing solitaire). Do you just lie down and listen?
As for me, I usually listen in the dark under my bed covers.

I must admit that I usually do several things while listening to prog or other music, for example visiting websites, reading or writing something.
There was a time when I would boil myself a pot of tea, turn off the light in the kitchen and listen and sing along to my Genesis selection tape. Back then I had a teapot warmer with perforated walls, so I could watch the light dancing on the wall when the flame of the tea candle was moving. It was my ritual. I also used to lie on my bed in the darkness, listening to a Bruckner symphony.

Mostly while reading, drinking some coffee, eating some chocolate. The good life
When some really good part comes by, a passage that make my hairs stand out, I put the book aside, get up from my chair and I dance around the room to the beat of the music... when I'm sure there's nobody who watches me

The majority of the time it's on my own, with my good pair of Sony's.
As mentioned in a previous thread, I have a thing for surrealism art, and the two go hand in hand for me.
90% of the time when I'm listening, I'm working on something, however. I do a lot of online work and writing, so it's very convenient to get some Yes or Genesis going to bring about the flow of productive work .

Mainly by myself, when I'm alone. In the car while driving too, but not my favorite way to do it, since I cannot pay full attention to the music, same when I'm at the computer.

Same way I listen to all other music, various ways.
Most of the time it's either in the car or alone in my room, there's nothing like blasting Gentle Giant in the car.

Very, very loudly. On vinyl, in my music room, in a comfy chair, with a glass of top quality real ale carried out from my local pub.
I listen to the whole album from start to finish.
The other way is on the cassette player in my car (and the CD multichanger if the garage that bust it ever gets working again!).

Usually through headphones or in the car, on my own (singing along when I can), although driving with my prog-loving husband is a great time to listen and discuss the music. We usually hear different things in songs - he focuses on drumming in particular and the music in general, while I tend to pay attention to the lyrics. I just realized, for example, that with all the times he's listened to Going for the One, he never once heard the self-mocking verse in the middle ("Now the verses I've sung don't add much weight to the story in my head so I'm thinking I should go and write a punch line/But it's so hard to find in my cosmic mind so I think I'll take a look outside the window") and now he's delighted to have discovered it, while I now understand more about unusual time signatures.

Downstairs in my listening area, sitting and usually reading along with the lyrics, 90%+ of my media habit is vinyl so I pay attention. When working at my desk I will do digital player on shuffle or reel to reel tape

I listen most of the time alone, and I don't do anything physical or mental, just sit quietly, close my eyes, and enjoy! Same procedure for classical music. Sometimes, I listen with a close friend of mine, and again, just sit with eyes closed and sit quietly.

For music I've already listened to a lot, I like to play it through the stereo while playing a game of darts or pool. I'll end up rocking out a lot and playing little, which is fine by me For newer music, I'll usually listen to it while on the computer, since I can't absorb all its' newness right away.

As a teen in the 70's I had a relatively up end stereo system for someone my age and would pipe the tunes through my bedroom window out to the pool area. In the 80's I got into sound engineering and listened mostly through AKG K240 studio phones while laying on my bed in the dark. By the 90's I was married and again used an up end stereo system. These days it's mostly in the car as that is the only real time I have to actually listen to music. When I'm home I'll do the iPod thing while cutting the lawn or doing yard work.

I listen to music at home with a CD player. For some reason I don't get into listening to it on the computer. Only rarely do I go that way. I often listen in the dark at night when I go to bed in order to help me go to sleep. In actuality it usually keeps me awake but content. I often listen to music in the car on the road. It's rural Oklahoma, so every time I head into town it's just perfect for one or more Prog epics.

I listen as the mood goes. Sometime the same song mades me sad and introspective, sometimes I have to sing along, pretending I'am in a concert (yeah, I do that).
It depends.
But one thing is almost certain: I listen while reading - two passions combined.

Of course contrary to what I just said above I am right now listening to and loving the new Leprous album.

For me, prog is ideal travelling music. I like a long train journey or flight, sit back and listen while watching the world go by. It's good in the car as well. I struggle to listen and do nothing else - my eyes get bored. If I have an ironing marathon I like to stick a live DVD on. I have my ipod on at work sometimes. No multi-tasking - not necessarily with headphones in the dark, but not far off. I find the 30 minute 'auto-pilot' car ride to my school in the morning is a great way to keep up to date with new releases or re-live old classics. 20-30 mins gets in at least one epic track!

Most of my listening is in the car or while sitting at the computer. In the car I shuffle my ProgFusion play list (a potpourri of prog and jazz from Billie Holliday to Methexis). At the computer I generally listen to whole albums while writing or reviewing manuscripts.
When relaxing downstairs at the home theater (pretty rare these days) I either play entire albums or shuffle. The key to this experience is zoning out to the visuals on the 50-inch plasma.

My prog moozik listening choices I prefer to listen on headphones, I love hearing the tiny details playing around my head from i.e. tinny rhythm guitars on my right to lead guitars tp my top left, drums in the middle with every now and then feeling the drum roll going from one ear to another etc etc. great prog moozik drags me inside and I tend to close my eyes and let go, most wonderful feeling really. Thus headphones are my choice of preference especially if I am alone at home, I never feel lonely. xxxx
