 Topic: Trespass OR Nursery Cryme?

Well you all know my choice, but I just wanted to know why more people prefer Nursery Cryme to Trespass. The addition of Hackett and Collins of course improves the overall musicianship within the band, but I think the melodies on Trespass are more serene and effortless, with the aggressive moments from The Knife done better than The Return Of The Giant Hogweed. The lyrics and narratives are also more interpretable, plus Rutherford and Phillips make a killer combo in creating a strong atmosphere (along with Mayhew's fitting drumming, even if it is pretty below par). The keyboards are less developed on Trespass, but the guitars occupy the space just as well. If you do prefer Trespass though, also say why. I'd love to know what the albums mean to you, and what puts one above the other/what more you could possibly want from either of these masterpieces

I like the musicians on both albums, but the songs are stronger in my opinion on Nursery.

Nobody's writing yet. Are they thinking about it or just passing the buck, remaining anonymous in the hidden corners of cyber space? Me, I prefer Nursery Cryme although I find Trespass an excellent album. It is because the Genesis sound is perfected by the inclusion of Hackett and Collins. The music is more ambitious and yet it succeeds. Trespass has some elements of the earlier psychedelic sound. That is not a problem in itself, but it sounds as if they had not quite arrived yet. Approaching, but not entirely there. Anthony Phillips seemed uncomfortable with an electric lead solo, although his pastoral and ensemble playing is excellent. Hackett has those two but his soloing is much better. Gabriel's voice is less strident. Collins' drumming is a definite improvement. Banks and Rutherford sound better as well. Everybody sounds better. The songs are more imaginative.

the Musical Box, Seven Stones, Hogweed, Salmacis are better than anything on Trespass IMO

Easy vote for Trespass. I feel a lot of emotion in those songs, all of them, whereas Nursery Cryme feels a bit over poked to me. I think Hogweed is ideal for that kind of exaggerated delivery, but the others, though fine songs all, just don't resonate as much as the average Trespass song. Of course, The Musical Box is also a classic piece of musical drama, but I've kind of maxed out on it over the years and don't feel like listening to it as much any more.

I'll be the minority and vote for Trespass. I feel like they were pushing too many boundaries with NC and it doesn't all run as smooth as Trespass does. Plus, The Knife is my third favourite Genesis song while the hugely overrated Musical Box is like twentieth.

Trespass. The classic Gabriel Era dryness and pastoral-ness was not put to the best use on Nursery Cryme, so it suffers a bit compared to Foxtrot and Selling England, as well as Trespass's beauty. While the first side of NC is excellent, the second pales a bit, while Trespass is very good throughout. And "Looking For Someone" is the best track out of not just these two, but all of the first three Genesis albums.

They're both terrific.
However, The Musical Box and Fountain of Salamacis do not quite compensate for Harold the Barrel.
Trespass has better atmospheres and no tracks that are less than good, so it gets my vote.

I was fortunate to see the Canadian band "The Musical Box" last night, performing their "Foxtrot" show....interestingly, they performed "The Knife," "The Musical Box," and "The Fountain of Salmacis" in their set, along with most of Foxtrot! God, they were excellent!
Nursery Cryme for me.
