Well you all know my choice, but I just wanted to know why more people prefer Nursery Cryme to Trespass. The addition of Hackett and Collins of course improves the overall musicianship within the band, but I think the melodies on Trespass are more serene and effortless, with the aggressive moments from The Knife done better than The Return Of The Giant Hogweed. The lyrics and narratives are also more interpretable, plus Rutherford and Phillips make a killer combo in creating a strong atmosphere (along with Mayhew's fitting drumming, even if it is pretty below par). The keyboards are less developed on Trespass, but the guitars occupy the space just as well. If you do prefer Trespass though, also say why. I'd love to know what the albums mean to you, and what puts one above the other/what more you could possibly want from either of these masterpieces  Anyway, thanks for any feedback!

Nobody's writing yet. Are they thinking about it or just passing the buck, remaining anonymous in the hidden corners of cyber space? Me, I prefer Nursery Cryme although I find Trespass an excellent album. It is because the Genesis sound is perfected by the inclusion of Hackett and Collins. The music is more ambitious and yet it succeeds. Trespass has some elements of the earlier psychedelic sound. That is not a problem in itself, but it sounds as if they had not quite arrived yet. Approaching, but not entirely there. Anthony Phillips seemed uncomfortable with an electric lead solo, although his pastoral and ensemble playing is excellent. Hackett has those two but his soloing is much better. Gabriel's voice is less strident. Collins' drumming is a definite improvement. Banks and Rutherford sound better as well. Everybody sounds better. Nursery Cryme the Musical Box, Seven Stones, Hogweed, Salmacis are better than anything on Trespass IMO |

Easy vote for Trespass. I feel a lot of emotion in those songs, all of them, whereas Nursery Cryme feels a bit over poked to me. I think Hogweed is ideal for that kind of exaggerated delivery, but the others, though fine songs all, just don't resonate as much as the average Trespass song. Of course, The Musical Box is also a classic piece of musical drama, but I've kind of maxed out on it over the years and don't feel like listening to it as much any more. ------------- My other avatar is a Porsche It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle if it is lightly greased. -Kehlog Albran |

I'll be the minority and vote for Trespass. I feel like they were pushing too many boundaries with NC and it doesn't all run as smooth as Trespass does. Plus, The Knife is my third favourite Genesis song while the hugely overrated Musical Box is like twentieth. ------------- There is no dark side in the moon, really... Trespass. The classic Gabriel Era dryness and pastoral-ness was not put to the best use on Nursery Cryme, so it suffers a bit compared to Foxtrot and Selling England, as well as Trespass's beauty. While the first side of NC is excellent, the second pales a bit, while Trespass is very good throughout. And "Looking For Someone" is the best track out of not just these two, but all of the first three Genesis albums. -------------

They're both terrific. However, The Musical Box and Fountain of Salamacis do not quite compensate for Harold the Barrel. Trespass has better atmospheres and no tracks that are less than good, so it gets my vote. ------------- A TVR is not a car. It's a way of life. |

 I was fortunate to see the Canadian band "The Musical Box" last night, performing their "Foxtrot" show....interestingly, they performed "The Knife," "The Musical Box," and "The Fountain of Salmacis" in their set, along with most of Foxtrot! God, they were excellent! Nursery Cryme for me.

| Not sure... Tresspass I guess. I feel Nursery Crime has higher highlits (or rather Highligt... with The Musical Box), but it also has many songs I really dislike. While I actually like just about the whole of Tresspass, with no song I really dislike, and The Knife being a rather good song too. The band does sound more mature with Nursery Cryme, though. |

Nursery Cryme was a stepping stone to Foxtrot and developing the bands sound further and I think this is reflected in the sound of Nursery Cryme in the recordings. However, the tracks from Nursery Cryme on the Genesis Live album, well that's another story... |

I'll agree that Trespass is very under rated and smoother than NC. And I'll agree that Nursery Crime is not as even, but Gawd Nursery Crime is my favorite Genesis album ever!

Not that Trespass is bad album. On the contrary. But it isn't on par with Nursery Cryme. I've always counted Trespass as a start album of their sound and compositions (after the first one FGTR), but the classic line-up and true Genesis songs style is to be found only at NC. Musical Box is one of their best songs they ever wrote and there are another great ones on the NC album (Seven Stones, The Return Of Giant Hogweed or Fountain of Salmacis). My vote goes proudly to NC without slightest hesitation :-) -------------

I have to go for Nursery Cryme here because (a) it has the better songs - Musical Box, Hogweed, Salmacis and (b) it was the first prog album I heard, I think it was the bizarre stories about killer plants and people cutting their toes off for tea that first intrigued me.
And Musical Box has the best ending to a prog song ever.

Trespass is consistent. Nursery has about 3 mediocre tracks ------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock. |

I really love some of Genesis' music. However, I think that a lot of their albums are overrated; that probably puts me in the minority here at Prog Archives. I think that Trespass is definitely one of their best. ------------- I am the funkiest man on the planet! |

I think of Trespass as a "nascent" album. Like "Time and a Word," it reveals a band in the process of becoming something, but not having arrived yet. The songs are still held back by fairly conventional ideas and forms. ------------- sad creature nailed upon the coloured door of time |
