Dream Theater ... I love PT, but they did not have nearly as much of an impact on me (or the general prog music landscape) as DT.

Obviously, but imagine how much young people wouldn't be here without Dream Theater.

Or how popular some of these bands have gotten?
 
A lot of it owes the commercial success of Images and Words and Awake.

No.... There was prog before DT, but there was hardly much prog-METAL before DT (even if there was, it was not so famous) so many metallers got into prog thanks to DT. Also, all of those prog bands before DT, many people got to know them and love them after hearing DT. In fact, many even may have "got over" DT, but it worked as an entrance point.
