Five years ago, I would have said Dream Theater. Now, its definitely Porcupine Tree. In fact, I listen to more PT than DT these days. Something about the music just kept growing on me. DT has a better initial punch, but now proves to lack staying power. Go figure.Big%20smile

Porcupine Tree are better, write better songs, have better production values, don't have an annoying singer, don't play over the top material for the sake of it, know the description of 'feel', are original, etc...

Edit : most of all, they are INSPIRED !!!

DT's time is gone for me. they are a great band with great musicians, but right now, PT has something special, something like DT had a couple of years ago.

Maybe is because just the past year a got into PT...

DT master their instruments probably more than most bands today, but they are far from mastering songwriting, feel and originality...  which is why PT is better than DT... (and I have every album by both bands, by the way )

Even though PT is a great band, even though I like it a lot (own all studio albums +metanoia +voyage34), I really don't see it as a history-changing band in the history of prog.... you can say whatever you like, you can hate them as much as you want, but for prog-metal at least (and, sorry, for all prog) there is a before Images and Words and after Images and Words... Anyway, as this is a poll of favoritism, of course I'll go with The Dream. I hate this polls that seem to imply the idea that both bands are exclusive or something, at least many posts give that idea....

A couple of observations:

1) Wow, PT is kicking @$$ in this poll! I'm glad, because they're my choice too.
2) To the people who said that you can't really compare these two bands, I don't understand your point of view at all:

They have many similarities, so many it's almost a little eerie. They were both very important bands in the early times of the modern prog resurgence, and started releasing material in the same exact year (1989). Both of them produce a good deal of music that fits under the "prog-metal" label, yet both have strong "non-metal prog" qualities as well. Both have released about 8 studio albums and various other albums, live and otherwise, as well as live DVD's. Both have created a few "epic" songs, several "mini-epics" (i.e. 10-15 min), as well as more standard-length songs. Both are releasing arguably the two most highly-anticipated prog albums in 2007. Need I go on?

A great musician is not only one who plays very well, but also one who knows when NOT to play...  This is why PT are better than DT.

Negative feedback is just that, feedback. I think people shouldn't be questioned about their tastes and also I think that giving negative feedback shouldn't be prohibited or judged. Personal interpretation of others' supposed intentions mustn't become base of action. BTW, I was just reacting. No harm meant, but please be more gentle around, people.

I agree here.  Everyone should be perfectly OK by stating that he dislikes the subject discussed in a thread or that he prefers none. Everyone has got the options to agree, to disagree, to ignore or to protest. Sometime ago I was discussing similar situation with MikeEnRegalia, who was of the opinion that the best reaction to the threads you dislike is ignoring them, but I kinda disagree, because sometimes negative comments can be very helpful for other people participating to understand the point.

and by the way, I don't really like any of the two bands mentionned here

There's nothing wrong with playing to your ability level, as long as it sounds great, which it does.  I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people here think Charlie Parker and John Coltrane solos are "instrument masturbation."

Don't worry, I know what I'm talking about.  I know more about jazz than most here.  What you're trying to get at is the Parker/Coltrane=Great, and Dream Theater=Bad.  But if I asked you how much you listened to either you would probably say very little to both.  The conclusion is that Parker and Coltrane are protected by their reputation (which is very well deserved), while Dream Theater's reputation on this site leaves them vulnerable.  Nobody wants to dislike the masters/the people they're expected to like.

hahahhah.. I'm not going to get into a pissing match with you. IF you want to think you know more.. go ahead and think so LOL.   Their reputation is well earned..through what has been many years and will be for the future of music .. or something like that hahaha.  Dream Theater hasn't earned that.. won't earn it...  and shouldn't earn it.  Great players does not always equal great music..   and Dream Theater for some.. even many.. is a perfect example of that.  Love them if you must.... but those who don't will offer our two cents why we don't.  Be it musically, importance,  or reputation.. to mention Dream Theater in the same context with those giants of music is laughable.  Disagree if you will.....

Over the years, if I understand correctly, PT has become less the Steven Wilson show, and more a entire band effort. After watching the Arriving Somewhere DVD, I saw a real band effort. After watching Score, I saw a bunch of guys individually showing off. I am beginning to see why so many dislike DT. Confused

That's actually really hard. While Porcupine Tree seems to focus on moody, emotional and eased-out pieces of space rock, Dream Theater tries to metalize progressive music as much as possible. Dream Theater are greater musicians, they're solos are amazing, they're songs (especially Metropolis, one of my fav songs ever) are awe-inspiring. But i somehow like Porcupine Tree better.

Porcupine Tree is just light pop. (sometimes i like it little bit)
That explains the popularity in these "progressive" circles. Melancholic, artistic, nyances. f**k PT.

Though I don't like all DT, but it's still better.

PT for sure.  DT is a bunch of hotshots shooting waaay too often.  It's about the writing and lyrics tied with great playing I love.  Too old for show offs I guess.

None of them are great in my opinion. I vote for Dream Theater is better because they try to do some different things, but they hardly can do something that is much different from their previous works. At least they work without abbandoning prog.

Porcupine Tree is doing something different from their earlier work, but it is nothing different from some mainstream bands and they are not prog anymore since many years. They are more like an indie alternative metal band that insists in using the tag progressive rock just to appear to be serious concerned about the quality of their music, like many indie bands do.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....SW has spent years avoiding the tag "Prog Rock" so you are completely wrong there.Confused

Have heard only two Porcupine Tree songs in my life...
I'm planning to get one of their albums these days.

So I won't vote.

It is my professional opinion, that dream theater is really lame. (when compared to PTree)

PT.

Steve is amazing at what he does, all of the musicians in the band do a great job of playing perfectly and with emotion, and their music is also amazing.  Sure, maybe PT can't do the most insane solos (except for Gavin), but their music is emotional and well written.

I used to love DT but now I just don't like their stuff that much...

Have you ever read any recent SW interview? He mention his music is the real progressive while Flower Kings, for example, is not in one interview. So before you assuming something you don't know, don't assume anything because maybe it is you that is short of knowledge and as an admin you should be the last to make such an offending statement.

Can you prove what you say? I can, just search for a topic about SW and Roine Stolt controversy.

Choosing the lesser of two evils is never much fun. Both are awful.

Why even participate in such a poll if you don't like both bands ?

And why are your posts always negative ?

I voted it for Porcupine Tree for several Reasons:

PT was love at the first site.
DT took a very long time
PT sounded a lot like the band I love Pink Floyd specially in the early days.
DT sound too much like the bands once I hate Metallica well I can tolerated them I little these days.
Steve Wilson is amazing song writer and vocalist.
Mike and John are also but sometimes their lyrics are so stupid and boring.
Musically speaking DT win the poll with me. They guys are much better musicians that PT however Pt doesn't have to make so much noise to sound good.
DT members are fans of Porcupine Tree. I am not sure if that the same case with PT.

BUT, Both are 2 of my fav's prog band of today.!!!
