Is this the year of neo-prog? Probably not but there is 5 neos in the top twenty now.

I have really enjoyed the new Grayceon, Grails, Ulver and Phideaux myself, and would not say that this is a bad year for prog.

Musically, I think it's been a great year. I guess it's because I don't listen to neo-prog. Tongue

I was incredibly disappointed with the BtBaM EP. It reminds me of why I like Colors so much, and I think they're just trying to become the second coming of Dream Theater. I really hope their new album explores new territory, because they've been doing pretty much the same thing since Colors.

That being said, Tommy's solo debut Pulse is currently in my top 3 of the year. Kind of a mix of electronic, prog rock, and indie stuff. Here's some samples from it.

Here's him playing the first track in the studio.

One of the most simplistically beautiful songs I've heard in awhile.

Why are you down on Parallax?

The drumming is better, the compositions aren't as choppy, the prog is proggier.

I'm re-listening to Colors right now. It's better than I remembered but I still find myself wanting to fast forward through the generic -core for the real music at times.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I can understand all that, and it's definitely much tighter. I just feel like a lot of their ideas on The Great Misdirect and Parallax are starting to get recycled from Colors. That and I've come to enjoy (some) metalcore (Converge, Botch, Coalesce).

I will say that I do like the fact that Tommy's been working to flesh out his vocals and explore new avenues with them since Colors. I think it could have done better with some clean vocals in more parts.

I've been following BTBAM since the very beginning and have to say that The Great Misdirect and Parallax were way better than Colors.  I think they're still progressing compositionally and I can hear it clearly.  Not saying this of you at all but it seems most people on this site started with Colors so their expectations of them are so high now.  Most people don't realize how much they've truly progressed over the last decade.  More than most bands ever have or ever will.

I remember the first time hearing Shevanel Cut a Flip and thinking it was some of the most progressive NC metalcore ever.  I didn't think they could get any better than that song.  I did the same thing with Mordecai, then Selkies...... Every album they prove me wrong.

Neal Morse's Testimony 2, Nemo's Revolusion and Phideaux's Snowtorch are great, and the new ones from Magic Pie and Beardfish are highly enjoyable, too!Clap
