Aheulchatistas, Wobbler, Battles, and now Cheer-Accident, every record I was expecting so far this year was nothing but disapointing! Anything left to come out this year that I should get my hopes up for?

The progressive side of 2011 is weak, but the reast gives me quite some satisfaction. Better than last year so far.

Jardon De La Croix was decent, but nothing special. Still makes it album of the year so far...

Neal Morse's "Testimony 2" came out, I'm enjoying it.

The new Beardfish is weak, the Phideaux... from what I heard, is just more Phideaux. Er, new Blackfield, not so good, Presto Ballet, just ok... BTBAM, surprisingly good, much more lush and varied in its instrumentation than the last one. The new Van der Graaf sounds disappointing... geez. Wonder how the new Yes will be. Don't care much about the Kate Bush "Director's Cut" thing... what else, Magic Pie, Uriah Heep, Pendragon, Nemo...

Difficult to judge, sooo early in the year...

I thought the same of last year until October (I'd only had UZ's clivage), but most of the interesting releases came in the last quarter year... and 2010 turned out to be a better-than-expected year.

soo far this year, I've only found VdGG's album worthy of buying immediately, but it's not as good as trisector....

as for the Wobbler and consorts (or later on this year  Anekdoten) I'm not holding my breath.

the only two 2011 albums I have are the new Beardfish - "Mammoth" and the new Neal Morse - "Testimony 2" and they are both highly enjoyable.

New Beardfish and Phideaux I thought were stellar; likewise with new Magic Pie and Neal Morse, and we still have new Yes, DT and Opeth coming out... I'm enjoying 2011 quite a bit! Wink

Aheulchatistas's new one is great. So noisey. Way better than their other albums I heard.

As for 2011...it's been pretty good. Some good releases, some disappointments, some things I still haven't gotten too, and still a good number of releases I'm looking forward to. I would say on par with 2009, perhaps a bit better at this point at least. Little too early to be definitive about it.

2011's been good to me so far!  New Phideaux, Beardfish and Amplifier (2011 for the non-members!) all have had stellar releases and I'm even enjoying Pendragon's new album.  I still have Wobbler's new album coming in the mail and then new releases by Riverside and Sky Architect to look forward to.  I even saw that Mars Hollow has a new album coming out this year and new Steven Wilson solo!

For me, Snowtorch has been the best release but I haven't heard all of Testimony 2 yet (so far so good). Plus, a new Karmakanic album is in the works. Even if Snowtorch are the only good albums this year, I will not be disappointed because of how great Snowtorch is.

I have Gloss Drop pre-ordered. They work incredibly well without Tyondai. Phideaux put out some great regressive rock. Also, the new Fleet Foxes album was fantastic. I think it's been awesome so far. The King Of Limbs wasn't bad either.

Hmm... I disagree.

I think Mammoth (Beardfish), Testimony 2 (Neal Morse), and The King of Limbs (Radiohead) are excellent.  Snowtorch (Phideaux) and Take Care (Explosions in the Sky) are good too.

I'm not getting my hopes up for Fly From Here though.  I'll probably just listen to it on youtube...  Hopefully the new Symphony X album will be as good as the last one.  Also the new KC album should be good.

This year has already seen some really amazing albums. IMO you should re-think your strategy: Instead of working up your expectations on a very small number of albums, branch out and see which albums other users have found to be great. Have a look at album charts both here at Progarchives, but also Progfreak:

http://progfreak.com/Charts-50699.html" rel="nofollow - http://progfreak.com/Charts-50699.html

There you see the top albums of the current year and you can also browse each user's favorites ... from the albums you mentioned I recommend that you check out avestin's favorites. Many of the albums are available from Amazon or eMusic, which means that you can listen to extensive samples - 30 seconds from each track, which can seem disappointing if you're used to sampling full songs, but you can listen to those samples consecutively and that will give you a good overview of the album.

I think that some albums are simply more polarizing than others ... and those also tend to be the more interesting ones. That's why at PF albums receive a ranking bonus the more extreme their ratings distribution is.Big smile

Another superb year of prog music, IMO! For me best albums so far are made by Phideaux, Nemo and Wobbler. Another high class albums include Van der Graaf Generator, Magic Pie, Le Orme, Pandora, Stratovarius. Not what expected by Pendragon and Beardfish. That's my conclusion for the prog year so far. Wink And we are still expecting Yes, Dream Theater, King Crimson projekt and Symphony X as well as Sky Architect. So it's just inspiring, what is gong to be...ClapClapClap

Apart from that, I'm quite happy with King Of Limbs.

2011 is looking like a very good year actually. Fen's Epoch is a masterpiece and the best thing released this year so far, but Altar of Plagues, Between the Buried and Me, Credo, Enslaved, Grails, Grayceon, Hiromi, Mastodon, Moonsorrow, Obscura, Paatos, Pendragon, Phideaux, Protest the Hero, The Tangent, Tartar Lamb, Ulver, Unexpect, and Virus have all released excellent EP's, studio or live albums, and the albums from Pallas and VdGG are decent as well, though I wasnt expecting them to really impress me anyway. Plus, I just got the new King Crimson ProjeKt and My Dying Bride albums in teh post this morning and I'm still to listen to the new Karda Estra.

Wobbler's Rites at Dawn has been the only disappointment so far this year, which when you consider the amount of music I've bought from the first 5 months thats quite impressive.

Ha-ha, no. My point is: Every year I discover loads and loads of music/artists/bands from the last (couple of) hundred years or so. If none of my discoveries released something memorable the year I heard them for the first time: So what? I actually don't know if I've heard any album from 2011 yet (Ok, I bought the latest Radiohead), but I still got myself atleast 50 or 60 new albums, and heard the fantastic Linda Perhacs for the first time. I just don't understand why "new" music has to be from 2011.

Can't agree, I was just saying to another mate who likes prog that the year was going well, and as others have already said:

Phideaux : snowtorch, was brilliant, possibly the best album of the year
Magic Pie: superb, gets better with every play
Coming is a new Yes album with a Roger Dean cover
A new Live Dvd From The Flower Kings
A new Union DvD from Yes
a new Neal Morse album
A new Karmamanic album in the summer...
The Tangent : Comm in Sept
Stephen Wilson 2 disk solo cd

we had a great festival in Blackpool, first prog festival in the North West...
I wish every year was this good..

Oh, you can call 2011 in music anything but disappointing! This year's masterpieces will soon outnumber those of 2010.

Alright, let us count:

1. Par Lindh Project - Time Mirror (an album that was released in very late 2010, so I think most of us heard it in 2011)

2. Bernd Kistenmacher - Let In Out! (first proper 2011 album I've heard, and what an album! The most intense Berlin School music)

3. Van Der Graaf Generator - A Grounding In Numbers (not much describing needed; Some may disagree, but I find this album of by any means VDGG quality, both musically and by the concept.)

4. Pendragon - Passion (great album. One more step in the course taken with Pure. When I put this album, I usually play it 2-3 times in a row)

5. Phideaux - Snowtorch (I had great expectations, which this album fulfilled)

6. Credo - Against Reason (simply wonderful! As much as I love Rhetoric, this album may even be the improvement over it!)

7. Ulver - Wars Of The Roses (I approached it with great reservations after their Epochal "Shadows Of The Sun", but this latest album cast away all my doubts, it's nothing like Shadows, but it's has it's own magic.)

8. Fen - Epoch (absolutely fantastic prog-metal album... This band was unexpected revelation for me.)

9. Pandora - Sempre E Ovunque Oltre Il Sogno (this has to be, IMHO, a very strong contender for an "Album Of The Year" title. There is sooo much passion and sincerity put in this record... Even for RPI. )

10. Riverside - Memories In My Head (EP) (Even though, I've heard much of Riverside, I find this EP their best release. Mariusz Duda never sounded so good to me. Every second of this record takes your breath. Although this EP is longer than other bands' some albuims (32-33mins) I wish it was much longer...)

11. Grails - Deep Politics (This is just beautiful. Every ony I know who listened to this album had the same astonished reaction)

12. Wobbler - Rites At Dawn (I see some will disagree with me here, but I found this album very strong)

This list is not even remotely comprehensive; it lacks many band's albums that I liked: Von Hertzen Brothers, Virus, Nemo, Introitus, Moonsorrow, Le Orme, This Will Destroy You, Uriah Heep... Beyond strict progressive boundaries, I was very much impressed with Fleet Foxes and Tim Hecker's albums... Both are masterpieces to me.

And keep in mind, only half an year has gone....

We're waiting for Yes, Believe, Rhapsody, Symphony X, Fripp / Collins / Jackzyk and many more.

So, to put it short, this year, IMHO, is close to "progheads heaven".

Not the greatest year so far but I'm very happy with the new albums from Nemo, Presto Ballet, Pandora, Magic Pie and Uriah Heep.

On average I probably buy around 40 - 50 new releases each year and this year I've only bought 15 so far and we're nearly half way so I'm certainly down on amount of new albums I've been tempted by.

Some albums are "growers" and I've been quite impressed with the latest from Beardfish,Magic Pie and Pallas but a little disappointed with Blackfield

I haven't bought as much as I did the equivalent time in 2010 (blame Cameron's pay freeze for us hard pressed civil servants), but what I've got I've really enjoyed.

Top of the tree are Pendragon, Phideaux, and Decemberists - all fine albums.

HOLY FRIKKIN SHILT!!!

This may be the best year of all time in prog metal. I've heard all of Devy's Decon and it's his most prog metal album ever made. But I'm not sure it's as good as this. For those that know me, that should tell you something.

I've only listened to four albums frtom 2011 and I can say most of them are pretty good.

Grails: pretty good and very enjoyable
Magic Pie: It took me a wile to digest it, but it is a very solid and enjoyable album.
Fen: It's pretty average/bad IMO. It's too cold and apathetic, but maybe I need to give it more tries.
Phideaux: terrific album!

Wobbler's I have listened on the internet and I'll probably not buy it.

Just discover something old instead. Why waste time being dissapointed about brand new mediocre crap, when there's tons of unheard mastepieces out there from all times?

Thats exactly what I'm doing, I only got into fusion last year so I'm still discovering some of the maserpieces of the 70's.

Fixed.

As for 2011, we're seeing selections from these prog and non-prog classics:

VDGG
The Feelies
Kate Bush
Jakszyk/Fripp/Collins
Peter Murphy
Sonic Youth
Robin Guthrie & Harold Budd
David Sylvian
The Cars
Thurston Moore
The Flaming Lips

That's nearly as great as being back in the last worthwhile decade in the history of recorded music!

I found The BlackFlux pretty lackluster to be honest but The Agent that Shapes the Desert takes the same style and really develops some very interesting music out of it.

They reformed in 2010 after breaking up in 1988, so I guess "still" isn't quite the right word to use. This video was released back in February, I guess you should pay more attention.

Maybe it's the problem: there had been a lot of interesting records these last years, coming from veterans or newcomers, and one can feel numbed by this "flood" of releases.

Maybe, and I say "maybe", when you heard about new albums by Yes, VdGG, King Crimson (Fripp, you don't fool anyone, your new band IS King Crimson), Opeth, Zombi, etc... you begin to feel unimpressed, because the "exceptional" becomes the norm.

I went back and looked at the last 5 years and I'm pretty certain 2011 will probably eclipse all of them.

2010 and 2006 seemed especially weak. 2007 with Fear of a Blank Planet, etc. was very strong at the top, but fell off. 2009 had lots of great albums but no true banners. But I challenge anyone to do the same and think of this year's crop of albums.

One caveat is that I think if you don't listen to prog metal at all, then it's going to skew your view of modern prog.

The year is really solid so far.

Make A Rising, Tartar Lamb, Between the Buried and Me, and Protest the Hero have superb albums out.

Grayceon, Ulver, Human Abstract, Scale the Summit, Man Man, and Radiohead have good albums out.

There's plenty more on the way too. We're only at the halfway point.

I agree with the caveat Jay.  I think this year is particularly strong on the metal side, if that ain't your cup of tea you'll probably have a different take on how the year is shaping up.

Hell, I'm far from a huge prog metal fan, and I'd say my most anticipated albums this year are all prog metal.

I'm not really a metal fan and so far this year has impressed, although I've only heard three albums. There's still a lot on my radar I'm excited to check out ... Gosta Berlings Saga, Cheer-Accident, Grails, Korekyojin, Dear Hunter, etc...

As far as prog metal, I'm not the biggest fan, but many interesting albums are coming out.

The new Symphony X seems interesting, being a double album, and it's been while since their last album.
Dream Theater, Opeth, and Pain of Salvation are all coming out with a new album around September. DT is, of course, a highly awaited and controversial release. Opeth peaked my interest with what Akerfeldt was saying about the new album, and that new cover art got me excited, so we'll see. PoS; well, I have trouble getting into them, but by the sound of what Road Salt 2 is going to sound like, I'm interested.

The Black Flux had 2 excellent songs (one of which was a re-recording of a song they released back in the Ved Buens Ende days) and the rest was indeed lackluster. The new album is all at the same level of those 2 tracks

Hell no.  2011 has been a f*cking great year so far, especially for prog metal.

We've already seen some spectacular releases this year from Between the Buried and Me, Cave In, Earth, Graviton, Grayceon, The Human Abstract, Jesu, Protest the Hero, Scale the Summit, *shels, TesseracT, Ulver, UnexpecT, Virus, and Windmills by the Ocean, and there are too many other good releases on the horizon to even list.  Even on the non-metal side we've had some great releases from the Dead Kenny G's, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Tartar Lamb, and Thomas Giles, with bands like Battles, Fair to Midland, Primus, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor releasing things later this year, it's hard not to be excited for what's in store too.

The only really disappointing albums I've heard this year have been the new things from the Decemberists, dredg, and Periphery.

Generally I think it's been good year. Revou$ion by Nemo, Deep Politics by the Grails(my fav), Testimony 2 and Summereve are all fantastic. Snowtorch, Passion by Pendragon and Mammoth are very good. Wobbler's Rites At Dawn is a disappointment for me. Still need to listen to other releases to really give a more definite answer.

Well, I'll be honest. I only really started to follow new  releases towards mid 08 (thus prior to things kind of fuse together and I'm not all too sure what came out when)  but...

2010 was easily the best year in music since I started to really listen to music (back in 05, with the caveat I stated above). Three five star albums IMO, which doesn't even come close to any of those other years. (Even though 08 and 06 have a six star album each Tongue.) For me, 2011 is more or less equal to 09 at this point. Some really good stuff, but nothing overly the top great, at least not yet. Still plenty to listen to, both released and not as such.

As for your caveat...I do like certain prog metal, but admittedly I'm not in a very metal mood right now so I still need to listen to some of the bigger releases (Fen, AoP, Grayceon), which of course I will do by years end. And the best releases have been outside of the metal world for the most part in these 5.5 years, again IMO.

I beg to differ. I thought 2010 was a particularly dull year for progressive rock. Only a handful releases registered on my radar. So far 2011 has been very interesting with, Snowtorch; Kate Bush's Directors Cut, The Decemberists and Beardfish just to name a few off the top of my head. I am also looking forward to hearing new releases from Yes and Opeth and there are lots of releases that I am itching to get my hands on like Grail and Hiromi. 2011 does indeed seem to be more promising than 2010 ever was!
