Some days I answer yes somedays I answer categorically NO and some days I haven't even thought about them LOL

Greatest composers? They did write some fantastic music and Supper's Ready is one of the seminal masterpieces of Prog. But greatest? 

Greatest Musicians? No, a group of talented innovators who came up with some great arrangements

Greatest Identity? I could say Yes to this one, Peter Gabriel in his costumes are one of the classic images of the Prog Rock era

I'd take Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, You might get me to vote "Going-Tormato" combo (in fact I'm certain I would ((Awaken)) but that'd be like bullying wouldn't it? 2 on 1.. And Lamb.
And I LOVE Yes!

WOW!!! I have felt the same for a long time, Yes, KC and JT, in no particular order frankly, have always been my top bands. I know a lot of people will disagree, so it's nice to know somebody else feels the same.

Floyd is my favorite band. And I also like Jethro a bit more than Genesis. But they're just below them with Kayak and ELP maybe (considering just prog bands).

Would anyone agree that Genesis was the best prog act to weather the 1980's?  Consider Abacab and Invisible Touch against 90125 and Big Generator, or The Final Cut and A Momentary Lapse of Reason, or Moving Pictures and Power Windows.

My vote goes to Rush!

I quickly turn the radio dial when anything from Abacab or Invisible Touch comes on. Likewise, I don't really care for 90125 or Big Generator. And while I detest The Final Cut (except for "Not Now John"), I would be shocked and amazed if I heard the album on the radio and would listen (I have the record from its original release but never bought it in CD form), and I don't mind A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
 
I was never a big Rush fan to begin with, and I liked them less after 2112. To be honest, I like Rush's first few rock albums over anything proggie they did later.
 
I liked every other Tull album in the 80s (disliked A, liked Broadsword, despised Under Wraps, loved Crest of a Knave, was disappointed in Rock Island, enjoyed Catfish Rising)

A Momentary Lapse of Reason was the best 80s release from any of the old prog bands. In my humble opinion of course.

I think the best 80's release from a prog band was "Moving Picures".  But if we consider any decade after the 70's, the best one IMO is "The Division Bell" by FAR. It's brillant.

I agree with theqietone about PF, KC and Yes.
I agree with Varon and Zargus about VDGG.
I agree with Logan about Can, Magma and ADII (can't agree about Art zoyd cause still didn't get them, poor me !).
 
I think the poll stated 6 albums but mentioned only 5 albums.
 
Since nobody dares to claim Genesis' debut worth anything I think the fair comparison will be with Yes or VDGG that also vave a weak debut (though I find Aerosol quite good actualy). In this case I think Genesis wins over Yes with a very small gap but looses to VDGG.
If I compare them to KC there is no contest at all.
 
By the way I think even The moody blues had a great string of 7 albums although I do prefer Genesis over them.

Genesis had an extraordinary gift for melody...possibly the best of any rock band. 



I mean...just no words, you know? It's arranged perfectly. I don't really have a favorite band, but they are easily one of my most revered. And to the RIO-heads who think they're "so beyond it," why don't you be more predictable? LOL

Best prog band ever?  Not even in the top 10.

Only in the sense that 'complexity' means 'cramming as much sh*t into 10 seconds as possible' at least for ELP/Yes. KC and GG I would agree were truly more complex. But either way, Genesis' music is evocative in a way that KC and GG are not, with some exceptions - all of these bands are great in their own way, but Genesis has them beat as far as melody and scope. Four of their band members were important melodic components to the music that contributed in their own unique way without overlapping - how many bands can say that? 

Put another way - GG can write with intricate counterpoint and diverse arrangement, but can they sustain a melodic development over the course of 12 minutes in such a sublime fashion as the Cinema Show? No, they could not - just as it was beyond Genesis' ability to write On Reflection, so was it beyond GG's ability to write that incredible song. Complexity is not one dimensional.

I guess you had to grow up with it^. My 1st introduction was listening to the lamb twice through while reading the lyrics. Then I bought A Trick of the Tail.
