*giggles* Talk about giving a band a little too much credit...
here's one I like now I'm in a mean mood again: "There's kerosene around, there's something to do." - Big Black. I can't think of a better description of small-town boredom than exists in that small line. |

No clue what he's talking about, but it's a great phrase.

Spock's Beard lyrics are usually one step above abysmal, but I liked:
"And Newsweek's featured everyone by now..."
And
"And you're never satisfied / Your wants just change"
Kevin Gilbert's lyrics are among the best - the entire song "Goodness Gracious" is perfect.

I've always gotten chills by these lines, since I first heard them:
"Poured forth gracefully, this ctheric tincture Lifts winter's coat-of-arms with coaxing aromas and electricity. Used with vigilance, a Pitcher of Summer stirs a memory into swooning, And bravely, the flowers of the past will stretch their limbs into the sky While snow falls! (quietly all around.)" from "A Pitcher of Summer" by Kayo Dot, from Choirs of the Eye. |

excuse me, but what does "ctheric" mean? or do you mean "etheric"? anyway, this kind of lyrics may appeal to some; to me it is "schwülstig" (that German word expresses it better than "turgid" or "overblown") Edited by BaldJean - March 08 2008 at 12:25 |

The reason I think I like it so much is because of how it's derlivered... as for "ctheric" I have no clue what it means...but that is the printed lyrics...I believe it may something to do with oil or oil contamination or contamination in general...I love these lines because of how they are delivered, and also these last few lines make more lyrical sense in context of the whole song...listen to it here (myspace) I'm also usually not a fan of overblown lyrics, this being one exception, as I think overblown lyricism really fits in with the style of this band. it is probably "etheric" then; it would fit into the context. I flipped through some of our dictionaries (we have a whole collection of them here, since Friede used to work as a translator) and couldn't find "ctheric" anywhere Edited by BaldJean - March 08 2008 at 12:31 |

Possibly so; is it pronounced "eth - ear- ic" ? because it sounds like he says that in the song itself. or "set- ear- ic" ...can't be sure. The lyrics off of the Kayo Dot website say "ctheric", but I can't be sure...what does "etheric" mean?

Hoping I'm not repeating anyone here
'We don't get active, we become immune. Black Moon' - Black Moon (ELP). Great song, and I really need to pick up the album soon. 'The rocks in time compress Your blood to oil Your flesh to coal Enrich the soil Not everybody's goal' - Anyway (Genesis) 'Fate looks certain but then nothing's guaranteed You want for nothing, but is nothing what you need?' Time And Time Again - Asia Generally, early Asia is lacking in the lyrics department, but that song is a huge exception. 'You're coming along' - School (Supertramp) 'I have no time for Time magazine...or a rolling stone' - Minstrel In The Gallery (Jethro Tull) I'm not sure whether Minstrel or Aqualung currently strikes me as Anderson's lyrical high point. 'That land's downhill and shadows, And that's where I'll be' - Downhill and Shadows (Colosseum) Absolutely stunning bluesy song, with incredibly bleak lyrics. 'And I wonder what my life might be In a world like I have seen' - 2112 (Rush) |

"etheric" refers to the "ether", a substance that was believed by scholars of ancient times to fill the space between the stars, and yes, "eth - ear- ic" is the way it is pronounced Edited by BaldJean - March 08 2008 at 12:35 |
