  • "Don't surround yourself in yourself" - Yes
  • "I can't see the lines I used to think I could read between" - Eno
  • "Forward he cried from the rear and the front rank died" - Pink Floyd
  • "With a pair of zircon encrusted tweezers in my hand every other wrangler would think I am mighty grand" - Frank Zappa
  • "Told my girl I had to forget her, had to buy me a new carburettor" -queen (not prog sorry)

The laughter of the world only grieves him,

The line "the old man's guide is chance" seems to be a comment of Einstein's famous phrase "Jedenfalls bin ich fest davon überzeugt, dass der Alte nicht würfelt" ("Anyway, I am totally convinced the old man does not roll a die"; Einstein in a letter to physicist Max Born), by the way.

"And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghost, hot ashes for trees, hot air for a cool breeze, cold comfort for change? Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?"
Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here

Mind you, I think the whole lyric is perfect, not a wasted word.

"Strangers passing in the street, by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me..."
Pink Floyd, Echoes

"No-one told you when to run – you missed the starting gun... And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking, coming around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death."
Pink Floyd, Time

"So I opened my door to my enemies and asked could we wipe the slate clean, but they tell me to please go and f*** myself, you know you just can't win"
Pink Floyd, Lost For Words

"We got warehouses of butter, we got oceans of wine, we got famine when we need it, we got designer crime. We got Mercedes, we got Porsche, Ferrari and Rolls-Royce. Yeah, we got choice"
Roger Waters, It's A Miracle

"Muslim or Christian, Mullah or Pope, preacher or poet, who was it wrote 'give any one species too much rope and they'll f*** it up'?
Roger Waters, Too Much Rope

"If you can carry it out, you can take it away. If you can carry it out, you can take it away. If you can buy it, it can be bought. If you can buy it, it can be stolen. If you can break it, it's already broken"
Marillion, Interior Lulu

"A wise man once said a flower is only a sexual organ, beauty is cruelty and evolution. A wise man once said that everything can be explained with mathematics. He had denied his feminine side, now where is the wisdom in that?"
Marillion, This Is The 21st Century

I don't agree with Marillion's views on science, but I still think this is a great lyric.

"And it is as it is, and we take as we find, always next season's buds on the bough, but I'll never find a better time, hard though it is to allow, no I'll never find a better time to be alive than now"
Peter Hammill, A Better Time

I don't actually own this, my brother played it to me years ago and it left a big impression.

"I can see we are pilgrims and so must walk this road, unknown in our purpose, alone but not worthless and home ever calling us on. We've been waiting here for so long, all of our hands joined in hope, holding the weight on the rope, all of us pilgrims"
Van der Graaf Generator, Pilgrims

I can't type those words without hearing the music and... just, WOW! I don't normally go in for uplifting music, but this one creeps in under the radar and then nukes you. Repeatedly.

"The wall on which the prophets wrote is cracking at the seams. Upon the instruments of death the sunlight brightly gleams. Knowledge is a deadly friend if no-one sets the rules. The fate of all mankind, I see, is in the hands of fools"
King Crimson, Epitaph

As true now as it was then.

"Confusion will be my epitaph, as I crawl a cracked and broken path. If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh, but I fear tomorrow we'll be crying, yes I fear tomorrow we'll be crying"
King Crimson, Epitaph

"Sundown, dazzling day, gold through my eyes. But my eyes turned within only see starless and bible black"
King Crimson, Starless

"The dream machine's on speed, my head's up in the clouds. We met up on the ledge and I could read your mind. And though things fall asleep, nothing ever dies. I caught it on the bound and now we float—hands outstretched–along the river"
Anekdoten, Ricochet

Thanks to whoever it was who quoted this in their review of the album here on PA for opening my ears to this one.

Finally, for the time being, the one below in my signature, Kung Bore by Änglagård. According to anglagard.net, this translates as, "In the light from my lantern I see that shadow of sorrow, in dreams that have been extinguished from a life that has had it's time. I cannot stand and watch while we flee realities and truths where morality is fantasy". But I prefer hearing them in Swedish.

As I said in another thread, lyrics are as important to me as the music.

Team Spirit, Robert Wyatt

"What is left of your dream ?

White Man, Queen

A couple that have preceded me have already quoted some Rush lines which I quite enjoy but my all time favorite is "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice".

And then of course there is this creepy ditty from Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull

eyeing little girls with bad intent.
Snot is running down his nose --
greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes.

Id have to agree with the post that claimed Maynard Keenan was one of the greatest lyricists. i was trying to write down my favorite lyrics off the top of my head and almost half ended up being tool song.

"Before you point your finger you should know that i'm the man,
well im a man and your a man and hes a man as well so you can point that f*cking finger up your a**."

-Hooker with a Penis. probably not the most polite song to talk about by the rythm of his words in that song, the syncopation fits so perfect. Tool is all about rythm, the guitar, the incredible bass, the drumwork of Danny Carey, its all overwhelminly rythmic. no guitar leads, only rythm.  Maynard is no different. the lyrics work towards that total sum rythm of the song.

This used to be one of my favorite also. However, upon closer examination, isn't this implying that trading your heroes for ghosts is the same as exchanging hot ashes for trees or hot air for a cool breeze? Maybe someone who is better at grammar could correct me, but to me it seems like a flaw, and I squirm every time I hear that line now.

I remember thinking that shortly after I first heard it, over 16 years ago. On the face of it, it does seem to be a contradiction and the simplest explanation probably is that it's a mistake or to make the rhythm or other construction aspects work.

Maybe you ought to have added it to the annoying lyrics thread before it got locked Smile

However, I find it a little bit unlikely that Waters would be so careless. Another way to look at it would be that he is challenging assumptions – is swapping your heroes and getting ghosts in return really a bad thing? Can you really tell heaven from hell? Or is the grass always greener (or browner?) in the other one to where you currently are, whilst to a neutral observer they're the same? Is a cool breeze always necessarily better than hot air? Is change good or bad?

I consider myself a pedant, so maybe I did ought to be revolting LOL. Instead I'm just making up excuses for why it doesn't bother me. Sorry to be off topic. Embarrassed

Lots...This are the ones I can think of right now:

1.      There's an angel standing in the sun, and he's crying with a loud voice,
"This is the supper of the mighty One",
The Lord of Lords,
King of Kings,
Has returned to lead His children home,
To take them to the new Jerusalem.

 Genesis- Supper’s Ready

2.      Once carried through the current
And being swept away
The king is in the closet
He's hiding from today
And though he owns all fortunes
This room is where he'll stay
And his world is filled with darkness, turning grey

 Kansas – Closet Chronicle

3.      Stalactites, stalagmites
Shut me in, lock me tight.
Lips are dry, throat is dry.
Feel like burning, stomach churning,
Im dressed up in a white costume
Padding out leftover room.
Body stretching, feel the wretching
In the cage
Get me out of the cage!

Genesis - In the Cage

4.      The Poet and the painter casting shadows on the water --as the sun plays on the infantry returning from the sea.The do-er and the thinker: no allowance for the other --as the failing light illuminates the mercenary's creed. The home fire burning: the kettle almost boiling --but the master of the house is far away. The horses stamping -- their warm breath cloudingin the sharp and frosty morning of the day.And the poet lifts his pen while the soldier sheaths his sword.

Jethro Tull – Thick as a Brick
5.      The gaoler binds his hands and put the blindfold to his eyes
He leads him through the door before the crowd
The hangman sees his victim and all blood drains from his face
He sees his younger brother standing proud
The hangman tries to protest but he's ordered to proceed His trembling hands begin to take the strain His eyes are blind with streaming tears He cries for all to hear

“Forgive me God, we hang him in Thy name!”
The Strawbs – The Hangman and the Papist
 All very powerful.
 Iván

1."All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players" (Rush, LIMELIGHT; that whole song is a huge lyrical hook, indeed)

2. "There's Winston Churchhill dressed in drag; he used to be British flag, plastic bag, what a drag!" (Genesis; SUPPER'S READY; Gabriel always did have a way with words.)

3. "Hear the calling of a miracle; in the presence of the world; now we hold the right to re-arrange how the stories can be heard..." (Yes, THE CALLING; Great tune with excellent lyrics, imo.)

4. "Life is no more assuring than love (It's time to take the time)...there are no answers from voices above (it's time to take the time...)" (Dream Theater, TAKE THE TIME; interesting and very thoughtful lyric on their BEST record.)

High as a wave
But I'll rise on up off the ground.
You are the light and the way
They'll only read about
I only pray heaven knows
When to lift you out

10000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I have come home now!"

Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father,
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.

"It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings!"...

Firstly, the closing section of 'Supper's Ready'

There's an angel standing in the sun,
and he's crying with a loud voice,
"This is the supper of the mighty One",
The Lord of Lords,
King of Kings,
Has returned to lead His children home,
To take them to the new Jerusalem.

And this one from Tull's 'Thick As A Brick'

The Poet and the painter
casting shadows on the water
as the sun plays on the infantry returning from the sea

One which always sounds a chord with me is from Marillion's 'Script...'

In the silence of my shame
the mute that sang the siren's song
has gone solo in the game
but the game is over

Yet another nod to Peter Hammill (well, VDGG) I daresay it won't be the last in this thread:

No time now for contrition:
the time for that's long past.
The walls are thin as tissue
and if I talk I'll crack the glass.
So I only think on how it might have been,
locked in silent monologue, in silent scream

And finally for now, back to Roger Waters:

I was just a child then,
Now I'm only a man

Mr Antonio "Toni" Pagliuca (Le Orme):
1. From "Sguardo verso il cielo" (Looking at the Sky)
La colpa d'esser vivo e non poter cambiare / come un ramo secco abbandonato / che tenta inutilmente di fiorire
(The guilt of being alive and not able to change / like an abandoned dry branch / which tries in vain to bloom)

2. From "Figure di cartone" (Cardboard Silouhettes - about a demented woman in an asylum)
Stringi forte al petto il tuo cuscino / e sul muro bianco si disegna / il profilo di una donna con il suo bambino
(You hold your pillow tight to your breast / and the silouhette of a woman with her child / appears on the white wall)

3. From "La Fabbricante D'angeli" (The Angel Maker - about illegal abortion)
Sul ventre già fiorito di un'ingenua ragazzina / La luna si ferisce passando i vetri rotti
(On the already flourished womb of an innocent girl / the moon hurts itself by passing the broken glasses)

4. From "Regina al Troubadour" (Queen at the Troubadour - about a runaway girl)
Regina al Troubadour, regina della neve / Son tutti attorno a te perché non sai dir no / Distribuisci a ognuno il bene più vicino / facile, facile
(Queen at the Troubadour, queen of the snow / everybody's around you, because you can't say "no" / You give out to everybody / the closest at hand gift / so easy, so easy)

5. From "Un Angelo" (An Angel - difficult to say what this could be about!)
(I've known an Angel / he's always been close to me / I don't know where he's from / Maybe he came down from a faraway world / Now that you're here I find again the strength to hold on / to go on
Gardens of carillons / of gentle sounds / smelling like honey / like wet ground
I announce my joy / I've got a sunbeam keeping me warm)

6. From "Calipso" (a comparison between Ulysses and a migrant)
(Since I recognise your song / and the drawing on your loom / I dedicate to you, sweet Calipso / this thought of mine
I'm not an austere god / but only a man who's following the way / lit by your huge statue
Give freedom to your beloved hero / you welcome and nourished / Now he's very sad, you know / he wants back his own land / Even if the night was so warm under the star spangled Flag)

"You have planted all your everlasting hatred in my heart" - Robert Wyatt Out of the Blue

This one line doesn't do the song justice, so here's all the lyrics:

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
No need to wipe your feet
The welcome mat's not there
I’ll just take care before you dare
To step inside my door

Something unbelievable has happened to the floor
Something unbelievable has happened to the floor
Something unbelievable has happened to the floor
Something unbelievable

The room wont give you shelter
They’re open to the air
The upper storeys out of reach
The stairs no longer there
Beyond all understanding
You’ve blown my house apart

You set me free
You set me free
You set me free
You set me free
You set me free to let you know
You set me free to let you know
You planted everlasting hatred in my heart
You planted everlasting hatred in my heart

My rooms’ won't give you shelter
They’re open to the air
The upper storeys out of reach
The stairs no longer there
You planted all your everlasting hatred in my heart x4
You have planted all your everlasting hatred in my heart x5

"i sing the song of sinking ships
in a soft and sleeping sea.
a song of slow rises and falls,
a song where refrains are only restraints-

some say a tired ocean pulls everything apart,
and others say it's finally coming together.

in this song, the rhythms
are feet on these decks;
children run, and lovers dance

hands that reach for each other and
into the air for notes make these cymbals ride,
and when they are pulled back to their sides
with nothing but ideas for tomorrow,
those hands make these cymbals crash.

and in this song, fingers on strings
are in search of a truth of some kind
and we live in the light of the notes
that we strike.

and in songs like this one,
they all blend together,
seeking out others like themselves...

and in this song
we find a way to follow all or none,
to accept these ends or defy them-
but those notes hammer on...

and when no one remembers where these
ships were built,
or knows whether they found home,
their legacy lives on in songs like this.

and when you sing this song,
those lovers will dance,
and those truths will be found..
those notes and cymbals,
and oceans and fingers will rise up again,

though now, they fade."

Spock's Beard lyrics are usually one step above abysmal, but I liked:

"And Newsweek's featured everyone by now..."

And

"And you're never satisfied / Your wants just change"

Kevin Gilbert's lyrics are among the best - the entire song "Goodness Gracious" is perfect.

I've always gotten chills by these lines, since I first heard them:

"Poured forth gracefully, this ctheric tincture
Lifts winter's coat-of-arms with coaxing aromas and electricity.
Used with vigilance, a Pitcher of Summer stirs a memory into swooning,
And bravely, the flowers of the past will stretch their limbs into the sky
While snow falls! (quietly all around.)"

excuse me, but what does "ctheric" mean? or do you mean "etheric"? anyway, this kind of lyrics may appeal to some; to me it is "schwülstig" (that German word expresses it better than "turgid" or "overblown")

The reason I think I like it so much is because of how it's derlivered...

as for "ctheric" I have no clue what it means...but that is the printed lyrics...I believe it may something to do with oil or oil contamination or contamination in general...I love these lines because of how they are delivered, and also these last few lines make more lyrical sense in context of the whole song...listen to it http://www.myspace.com/kayodot - here (myspace)

I'm also usually not a fan of overblown lyrics, this being one exception, as I think overblown lyricism really fits in with the style of this band.

it is probably "etheric" then; it would fit into the context. I flipped through some of our dictionaries (we have a whole collection of them here, since Friede used to work as a translator) and couldn't find "ctheric" anywhere

Hoping I'm not repeating anyone here

'We don't get active, we become immune. Black Moon' - Black Moon (ELP).
Great song, and I really need to pick up the album soon.

'The rocks in time compress
Your blood to oil
Your flesh to coal
Enrich the soil
Not everybody's goal' - Anyway (Genesis)

'Fate looks certain but then nothing's guaranteed
You want for nothing, but is nothing what you need?'
Time And Time Again - Asia

Generally, early Asia is lacking in the lyrics department, but that song is a huge exception.

'You're coming along' - School (Supertramp)

'I have no time for Time magazine...or a rolling stone' - Minstrel In The Gallery (Jethro Tull)
I'm not sure whether Minstrel or Aqualung currently strikes me as Anderson's lyrical high point.

'That land's downhill and shadows,
And that's where I'll be' - Downhill and Shadows (Colosseum)
Absolutely stunning bluesy song, with incredibly bleak lyrics.

'And I wonder what my life might be
In a world like I have seen' - 2112 (Rush)

"etheric" refers to the "ether", a substance that was believed by scholars of ancient times to fill the space between the stars, and yes, "eth - ear- ic" is the way it is pronounced

These lyrics have always spoken to my heart:

Savage Butchery by Cannibal Corpse

Striking out with rage I pound him, stomp him
C***sucking b*****d don't feel mercy for him
With bare hands I break his legs, break his neck
Now my jagged blade will bring him to his death

Savage killer merciless machine
Butchering victims and watching them bleed
Savage killer chopping off limbs
Butchering for revenge, heartless assassin

Now the cutting starts I stab him, slash him
Less than a minute he became a victim
Now I will sever his legs, his neck
Hatred enemy his body I dissect
Savage

Savage
Butchery
Ravage
Ruthlessly

Veins spray blood it splashes in my eyes
Impulse of my rage will dictate how he dies
Chopped up while alive or killed with the first strike
What's left of his life is dripping from my knife

Savage killer merciless machine
Butchering victims and watching him bleed
Savage killer chopping off limbs
Butchering for revenge, heartless assassin

Savage
Butchery
Ravage
Ruthlessly

Indeed. This one makes me whenever I hear it though...

I've always pictured this song as kind of an homage for all the assassinated peoples of the world... ... ... indeed...

Sarcasm has no place on PA I guess.....that must be a new rule (the thread did say funny lyrics- and in a way- those lyrics are funny- as they are not be be taken seriously at all..or how stupid they are)

Yes, they are not meant to be taken seriously...

As for sarcasm...I think it has it's place here, but I think sarcasm is harder to detect through text than through expression in real voice and whatnot...which can cause confusion, as well as many unneeded arguements on forums ...

I just thought the sarcasm would be easily detected, seeing as how I post on PA website and not something like- Death Metal forums/Life Sucks website- and kinda how my last fm signature implies that I listen to more "decent " musicEmbarrassed

I was sure it was some kind of joke, but I didn't detect sarcasm. I simply thought it was a joke in bad taste. although I should perhaps not complain; the lyrics to "Dem Guten, Schönen, Wahren" by Amon Düül 2 are quite similar in taste

Has anybody mentioned "Wer Schmetterlinge lachen hört" by Novalis (the band)? Those lyrics were so good that still today some people keep thinking that they were adapted from a poem by Novalis (the poet)

"Wer  Schmetterlinge lachen hört / Der weiß wie Wolken schmecken / Der kann in Mondschein ungestört / von Furcht die Nacht entdecken"
(I try and translate - BaldJean, forgive my mistakes Embarrassed: The one who hears butterflies laughing / knows how clouds smell / in the moonlight, undisturbed by fear, he can discover the night)

That's the weirdest thing. Today, I discovered the band, and I JUST gave that album a listen.
And earlier today I got this Jan Dukes de Grey album and saw a review for it as soon as I got it.
Today is a wee-urd day for me.

slight mistake in the lyrics; it is "der wird im Mondschein ungestört", but else ok Smile. so it is not "can" but "will" in the translation

I don't have faith in faith
I don't believe in belief
You can call me faithless
I still cling to hope
And I believe in love
And that's faith enough for me

yeah, I was waiting for someone to post Cannibal Corpse or something, certain other nameless bands (that would get me banned) that write pointlessly offensive lyrics
