I'm in the 41 - 45 bracket, been into prog (and much else besides) for 30 years now. It's interesting that a lot of younger fans are emerging - for a long time prog was as drastically uncool as it was possible to be, but finally the tide seems to be turning.

Progressive rock could be birth related
Progressive rock is much like jazz or classical music, thus
there will only be a limited audience for this music as it does not
have easy to listen to catchy riffs or it performers are not able to dance around on stage and still be able to play the music
Progressive rock came of age with a boomer population where the
small percentage of fans was still big enough to financially support
making such records and touring.
When a similar boomer population occurs, then such complex music will be more accessible

You've obviously not seen footage of Ian Anderson in Concert in the 70's

We've had a 13 year old before. I forgot his name but I did some research: Parker, who's now 14 years old, but I don't think he posts here anymore.
|
I was 13 when I joined, if that counts for anything.
|
It does!
But Abstrakt is the current record holder, being 13 now.

i'm 16. wow, a lot of other 15-20's! i have friends who listen to bands like pink floyd and they've never even heard of 'prog'. it's just good music basically. hopefully there'll be a prog rennaissance in the next 5 years with so many young listeners of it.

I'm 19, I think you might want to consider the likely age to post on a messageboard for the final scientific analysis of this poll. The average messageboard member is 15-20 making them a majority in any forum.

I'm not a HUGE fan of prog anymore at 21, but about a couple years ago it was my favorite genre. Lately, I've been into what most call Minimalism, Ambient, Avant Garde, Classical Electronica (or some nonsense like that), Glitch, etc, etc..... Basically, music influenced by FLUXUS, Classical, Jazz, and art-influenced Electronica (not that dance crap). :) I think Prog will eventually bleed into such artful music when it reaches it's next step. Maybe SW will help bring it to the next step with another release. I hope he is done with the Pop+Prog thing. Of course, for much lighter music, Prog (and any other type of music besides the garbage corporate BS like most Hip-POP, boring Rock, etc..) is always nice to play, even some more intelligent Pop sometimes (despite over-the-top production with waveforms being cut). :D

That's a good point!
But:
What about Octogenarian forums?
Geritol User forums?
Alzheimer's Sufferer forums? (But they probably always forget their passwords.)
Titanic Survivor forums?
Civil War Vet forums?
Huh? What about those, smart guy?

The tide may be "turning here (then again, "prog" might just be turning into metal), on a prog site, but I wonder if there's a shift/trend toward prog in youth as a whole? Somehow I doubt it, especially if we leave out the metal.
Every new generation seems to discover Floyd and Zeppelin, but classic Yes? Genesis? Gentle Giant? VDGG? Magma?
Just a gut feeling (but based on observation teaching in highschools & now college) -- no offense intended to you, Syzygy, or anyone!

There are so few young prog fans, actually Keep in mind that this is an international forum, and by worldwide standards there's very few young prog fans. Especially in comparison to punk or hip hop. Prog is about as uncool as it gets, but the thing is that we(me at least ) Don't give a sh*t in the least if we're the only prog fans 10 miles around. NO ONE in ,my school likes or even knows prog. Oh wait, I;ve seen a Yes and a Tool shirt once... over the course of five years. There's a lot of Pink Floyd fans around, but very few if any know other prog. The closest prog fan I know is King Of Siam(30 miles or so from my town). And please quit blaming everything on metal.

Can I at least blame metal on metal, Miracle Whip?
Seriously though, don't you think the great majority of the 14 - 25 set came here via metal/prog metal? That's just what I think I see -- there was no prejudice toward the music intended. I think that (a large part of) what many of the younger members here call "prog," I (and many other older prog fans) would call metal.
In general, the two rock forms and their respective fans were almost diametrically opposed, when I was a young fellow....

I'd say 50/50. Most of the Velvet Crew are not the biggest metal fans. A couple are even stuck in the 70's Most close minded metal fans leave as newbies and don't make it far. I found this place via metal myself (searching for "Six Degrees...") but I didn't come here for metal only(I didn't even know much prog metal outside of DT).

Does this poll show prog-rock is becoming much more popular with young people? Or does it show that ages 15-20 have a lot of time on their hands and need to get lives? I wonder which, no offense, as I am in this group too.

I would say that my tastesin music are GREATLY effected by my dad and mom's music, if it weren't for them, I would be listening to this MTV/Radio crap that everyone else my age listens to.

same here. I'm fifteen and mom and dad's music defnitely turned me own to prog. mom's a big tull and tangerine dream fan, and dad loves all the old stuff (genesis, yes, king crimson, supertramp, rush, floyd). Out of those i only really listen to floyd and a little tangerine dream. Still a metalhead at heart though (Ive been listening to it since I was 7)
