I've only ordered my first Henry Cow - although I've heard their music , and I'm frightfully low on Frank Zappa
I want some Curved Air eventually
I did order Amon Duul but never got it.
Overall I want more Krautrock and Rio

Help me!  If I can only order one Zappa album, which one should it be?   I will say that I prefer emotional instrumental music to the Zappa verbal humor.

I've also kept ignoring DT - but only up to a few days ago, when I gave a listen to "Images and Words". Now I regret not keeping my good policy. It was incredibly boring and uninspired for me. I've seen some videos of them over the internet, they were a lot better.

I regret, though, ignoring prog-metal. I've recently started digging and found some excellent things - it's not called prog-metal without a reason. For the moment I keep with the technical side of it - after I made myself think of it as a form of jazz-rock, it was easy. Right now I'm into Indukti, Spastik Ink, Subterranean Masquerade, Psycho Symphony, Celelalte Cuvinte's metal albums. Also I like Opeth's Damnation, but that's not metal.

One other ignored scene - the Italian Symphonic. Only know PFM and Banco, must progress.

Lots of other great bands still to discover - this is what this site is here for, thanks! Smile

Here's some from my "A List" (one's that I'll get ASAP but there's just so much stuff these days).  I've heard a good bit from most of these artists but haven't been able to explore them enough:

Zappa - own only one album, got it a while back and wasn't too impressed but I've since realized that he is very diverse and you must try something from each era

Hatfield and the North - I love Caravan so these guys are a logical next step
After Crying - don't know much about 'em
Fairport Convention
The Kinks
Landberk
Mannfred Mann's Earth Band
The Soft Machine
Procol Harum
Santana
Renaissance
Henry Cow

after my recent Italian prog splurge, I still own zero albums from Banco and Osanna (though I'm far from "ignorant" of them) and I've only taken the dive into Area in the past few weeks (needless the say, I'll be doing plenty more diving with this band).

I also forgot to mention the entire Italian genre. I just don't see how I could like it, which makes me think I might as well not try it.

I recommend Lather.  It is a 3CD-set which incorporates nearly every style he ever did and is quite brilliant.  It will certainly give you a good idea of whether his music is for you.

I say Grand Wazoo. It's full of addictive rhythms, blazing solos, and unique compositions. And it's nearly entirely instrumental, to boot, so you'll probably like it. But that's just my suggestion.

What's not to like? Do you not enjoy vocals you can't understand? Otherwise, if you enjoy stuff in the symphonic section, you should enjoy Italian Symphonic.

Also, I second the recommendations on The Grand Wazoo, though, as I said before, I've only heard a few albums

Why? Because we are not native speakers of English and the use of our native language disturbs you? Or perhaps because you think that, not being British or American, we can't play our instruments or write songs?Confused

That said, everybody here knows I'm not really into RPI - but I grew up with it, and it was my first approach to prog at the age of 11. You are free not to like whatever you see fit, but I have to say that remark of yours smacks a little bit of racism, or at least of prejudice based on ethnicity.

From Amazon UK:

"Complete Zappa", 29 Oct 2006
The Läther album truly shows the diversity of Zappa's catalogue. On these three fabulous disks you get everything from satirical rock pieces like 'Titties 'n beer' to big band jazz, to blues, to guitar driven power rock, to conceptual orchestral avant-garde pieces, all interspersed with beautiful zappaesque absurdities. It does also of course, include "The adventures of Greggery Peccary", a 20:56 long track about how a pig invents the calendar.

This would probably be my 'desert island' Zappa album, simply because of its fantastic diversity and flawlessness. To quote Ben Watson's "The complete guide to the music of Frank Zappa": "Läther was Zappa's vastest, most ambitious, most wide-ranging and most complete artwork. Ever."

Couldn't agree more.   I think it makes an excellent Zappa primer for anyone who wants to explore his music .

For some reason, I've ignored Pain of Salvation for years. Now I've finally given them a proper chance, and rather enjoyed what I heard - even if it was a bit overblown for my tastes.

I don't say I hate Rare Bird. But I don't own any albums of this group until today though I've been a progressive rock fan more than 30 years .... Cry

Until very recently, The Moody Blues. I kind of regret not checking them out earlier, they are seriously great.

Prog stuff I'm still "ignoring" (as in keep forgetting to hear) is Peter Hammill and Amon Düül II. And probably a lot more...

what about all the members who don't like Kansas 'coz they're "too American"? I don't think that post was intentionally being racist (coulda been phrased better for sure) but some people have a hard time listening to vocals that are in a different language - nothing against the songwriting or musicianship (I hope not, because that would be dead wrong)...I know it was strange for me at first, especially because lyrics are important to me.  But as for Italian vocals...well I'd almost say I prefer them to English, easily the most lyrical and aesthetically pleasing language I've ever heard; matter of fact, bands like PFM and Le Orme encouraged me to begin learning Italian when school settles down a bit.

As for ProgBagel:  If you like Genesis, King Crimson, or ELP, then you MUST explore some Italian progressive rock.  IMO the Italian scene is every bit as good as the British scene, much deeper.  In the UK you had GG, Genesis, Yes, etc, but the quality dies off a bit after that, whereas there's tons of one-shot bands from Italy (and don't forget the new stuff - they're still going strong to this day), you'll still be discovering things you'd never heard of even after years of exploring!

Cheers and happy exploringSmile

I had some trouble at first getting into Italian prog, and other prog sung in different languages.  Not because I thought the language was not suited for the genre, but simply because I didn't understand what was being said.  It is hard at first getting used to listening to music sung in a foreign language.  Not that English is in any way superior, it's just what I know.  However, once I got used to the idea of having absolutely no idea what was being sung about, I have found that I love Italian prog.  It was an acquired taste for me, but well worth the effort.  And anyone who likes symphonic prog is doing themselves a great disservice by not at least trying out some Italian prog.  So to Prog Bagel, I would suggest giving PFM or Banco a try, or even some of the newer Italian prog bands like Ubi Major or La Maschera di Cera or Conqueror.  Great stuff all.  Of course, I still don't know what any of the songs are about. Embarrassed  So I just pretend that I'm listening to Yes, because I don't know what any of Anderson's lyrics are about either.  Tongue

Neo-prog bands in general.  I just have a hard time with them.  I may have listened to I.Q. or Arena or Marillion once or twice in the past couple of years.  I have most of their albums but have a hard time listening to them.  They have been ignored and will likely continue to be ignored.
