So, there's some bands that may have or may not have been around a while. They're in a genre you like, and you would probably like them if you gave 'em a listen.
But, for some reason, you just haven't checked them out. At all.
What are some of the bands you have done this with? Hopefully, we can get people interested in the bands they may have ignored!
I've completely ignored the Flower Kings, and The Moody Blues and Strawbs.

As much as I love Ok Computer, its in my top 5 albums, I dont really have any other album... the reaosn for it is incredibly stupid as Radiohead is so easy to get, there is no music store that doesnt have them... I always look for "hard to get" things, prog and obscure stuff... and when the day comes where there is nothing more to get...then I will buy myself some more Radiohead... the same happens with the Beatles...well, Abbey Road to be exact

Henry Cow.
I've only just started catching up (with LEG END) and boy is it worth it!
Italian Prog.
Progarchives has made it clear to me there's a lot to enjoy, so I bought some CDs and look forward to enjoying them.
Van der Graaf Generator.
I've never really explored them, I always thought they were too wordy, most probably I was wrong...

Try Pawn Hearts. It never came off to me as self-indulgent, even if the vocals were very prominent.

Generally if I hear of a band I don't know I try and check them out somehow. In the old days that was by Sampler LPs, now it's magazine cover discs, MySpace and YouTube. So I have heard most of the bands I have heard of and bought something of more or less everything that appealed. The only exception I can think of at the moment is Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, but that's only because I didn't know they even existed until a few months ago . And they've just gone on my Amazon wishlist...

Thanks for the offer Raff, but I can get Io Sono Nato Libero for about £8.00 inc p&p (€11?) which I think is incredibly cheap.

ermm...lots of them, I think. RUSH is the most ignored, I heard only Hemispheres and Moving Pictures (the most celebrated ones), and they bored me to death. Gave them up immediately after that and never returned.
then...
Ayreon
Meshuggah
Deadsoul Tribe/Devin Tounsend
Symphony X (just listened few times to "Paradise Lost" recently...that's not what I'd adore)
Earth & Fire (gonna work it out!)
High Tide
Strawbs (soon to be explored)
Velvet Underground
Egg
Brand X
Fairport Convention
Family
Happy Family
Kraftwerk
Henry Cow
Miriodor
Nebelnest
Soft Machine
Ozric Tentacles
Weather Report
Happy the Man
Psychotic Waltz
Sylvan (listened to their latest only and liked it!)
Magenta (heard only SEVEN, which is very good)
Mostly Autumn (heard 2001's album, unimpressed)
Parallel of 90 Degrees
Salem Hill
SBB
Antonious Rex/Jacula
Greenslade
This is what I've already gotten, but only gonna explore!!!

I rarely ignore without listening to something first. Admittedly my "run a million miles inthe opposite direction" list is pretty long, but as far as ignoring something quite inadvertantly...hmmm....have to think about that.
Oh yes. The Mars Volta. I don't mean to ignore them, I just haven't gotten around to finding an album and sitting down with it, giving it some decent attention in order to find ot if this is something I'll dig.

Most of Zeuhl, RIO/Avant, and the Italian Prog genres. Not too much interest in those genres at the point. As an aside when I see the name Henry Cow, I think of Harry Carry and his "Holy Cow!!!". Not sure why? Must be a combo of the sports addiction with the prog addiction.
There are still too many bands in the old Art Rock, Neo Prog, and Prog Metal categories that I haven't given a listen to yet. I don't think any of the big ones however. I have heard most of those. However, just about anything on Erik Neuteboom's list would probably qualify as unexplored at this point.

I've also kept ignoring DT - but only up to a few days ago, when I gave a listen to "Images and Words". Now I regret not keeping my good policy. It was incredibly boring and uninspired for me. I've seen some videos of them over the internet, they were a lot better.
I regret, though, ignoring prog-metal. I've recently started digging and found some excellent things - it's not called prog-metal without a reason. For the moment I keep with the technical side of it - after I made myself think of it as a form of jazz-rock, it was easy. Right now I'm into Indukti, Spastik Ink, Subterranean Masquerade, Psycho Symphony, Celelalte Cuvinte's metal albums. Also I like Opeth's Damnation, but that's not metal.
One other ignored scene - the Italian Symphonic. Only know PFM and Banco, must progress.
Lots of other great bands still to discover - this is what this site is here for, thanks!

Here's some from my "A List" (one's that I'll get ASAP but there's just so much stuff these days). I've heard a good bit from most of these artists but haven't been able to explore them enough:
Zappa - own only one album, got it a while back and wasn't too impressed but I've since realized that he is very diverse and you must try something from each era
Hatfield and the North - I love Caravan so these guys are a logical next step
After Crying - don't know much about 'em
Fairport Convention
The Kinks
Landberk
Mannfred Mann's Earth Band
The Soft Machine
Procol Harum
Santana
Renaissance
Henry Cow
after my recent Italian prog splurge, I still own zero albums from Banco and Osanna (though I'm far from "ignorant" of them) and I've only taken the dive into Area in the past few weeks (needless the say, I'll be doing plenty more diving with this band).

What's not to like? Do you not enjoy vocals you can't understand? Otherwise, if you enjoy stuff in the symphonic section, you should enjoy Italian Symphonic.
Also, I second the recommendations on The Grand Wazoo, though, as I said before, I've only heard a few albums

The Läther album truly shows the diversity of Zappa's catalogue. On
these three fabulous disks you get everything from satirical rock
pieces like 'Titties 'n beer' to big band jazz, to blues, to guitar
driven power rock, to conceptual orchestral avant-garde pieces, all
interspersed with beautiful zappaesque absurdities. It does also of
course, include "The adventures of Greggery Peccary", a 20:56 long
track about how a pig invents the calendar.
This would probably be my 'desert island' Zappa album, simply
because of its fantastic diversity and flawlessness. To quote Ben
Watson's "The complete guide to the music of Frank Zappa": "Läther was
Zappa's vastest, most ambitious, most wide-ranging and most complete
artwork. Ever."
Couldn't agree more. I think it makes an excellent Zappa primer for anyone who wants to explore his music .

| what about all the members who don't like Kansas 'coz they're "too American"? I don't think that post was intentionally being racist (coulda been phrased better for sure) but some people have a hard time listening to vocals that are in a different language - nothing against the songwriting or musicianship (I hope not, because that would be dead wrong)...I know it was strange for me at first, especially because lyrics are important to me. But as for Italian vocals...well I'd almost say I prefer them to English, easily the most lyrical and aesthetically pleasing language I've ever heard; matter of fact, bands like PFM and Le Orme encouraged me to begin learning Italian when school settles down a bit.
As for ProgBagel: If you like Genesis, King Crimson, or ELP, then you MUST explore some Italian progressive rock. IMO the Italian scene is every bit as good as the British scene, much deeper. In the UK you had GG, Genesis, Yes, etc, but the quality dies off a bit after that, whereas there's tons of one-shot bands from Italy (and don't forget the new stuff - they're still going strong to this day), you'll still be discovering things you'd never heard of even after years of exploring!
Cheers and happy exploring

I had some trouble at first getting into Italian prog, and other prog sung in different languages. Not because I thought the language was not suited for the genre, but simply because I didn't understand what was being said. It is hard at first getting used to listening to music sung in a foreign language. Not that English is in any way superior, it's just what I know. However, once I got used to the idea of having absolutely no idea what was being sung about, I have found that I love Italian prog. It was an acquired taste for me, but well worth the effort. And anyone who likes symphonic prog is doing themselves a great disservice by not at least trying out some Italian prog. So to Prog Bagel, I would suggest giving PFM or Banco a try, or even some of the newer Italian prog bands like Ubi Major or La Maschera di Cera or Conqueror. Great stuff all. Of course, I still don't know what any of the songs are about. So I just pretend that I'm listening to Yes, because I don't know what any of Anderson's lyrics are about either.

Neo-prog bands in general. I just have a hard time with them. I may have listened to I.Q. or Arena or Marillion once or twice in the past couple of years. I have most of their albums but have a hard time listening to them. They have been ignored and will likely continue to be ignored.

In regards to the Italian prog, I agree that I don't think that racism is particularly behind the ignoring of this genre. I know that many members of PA are more interested in the musical output than the lyrical output, but I tend to listen to the lyrics as much if not more than the music (not a musician, although I have always enjoyed time signature changes and what to my ears sounds like complicated music). I enjoy instrumental music, but I tend to like it the way that Rush does it, where they add one or two instrumental songs to their albums. I have a hard time listening to an album of nothing but instrumentals. I tend to lose interest along the way. I feel that the Italian Prog would have the same effect since I would have no idea what was being sung.
Similar but different analogy is foreign films. I really have never been interested in watching foreign films either. If the characters are speaking in a non-English language than obviously I will have no idea what is going on. Obviously, with close captioning if the dialogue is translated into English, I can at least read along, but this somehow loses something for me. On the other hand, a famous example is the Godzilla movies which were all done in Japanese and overdubbed in English voices. When I was younger I always enjoyed those movies, but the fact that the words didn't agree with the lips was always a bit distracting, and quite frankly kind of funny.
Am I losing out with this attitude? Probably. Is it racist? I don't think so or at least I hope not. Is it because I am a dumb American that can only speak the one language that I was born and raised with? Most definitely. I had 3 years of Spanish classes, but I was never able to get past the idea of thinking of the word in English and then translating it into Spanish. Also, I have much admiration for those that can speak fluently in multiple languages.

Both Le Orme and PFM have had albums released with the vocals re-recorded with English lyrics. I bought these back in 1973 and immediately loved them. However, I have since "replaced" them with the originals sung in Italian and they are so much better (especially on the PFM albums). Yes it is nice to know what they are singing about, but you can always use Google or Babelfish to translate the written lyrics.
I once questioned a German friend of mine why no German bands sing in their native tongue and his reply was "English is the language of Elvis and the Beatles, it is Rock'n'Roll". Since then I have heard a number of bands with German lyrics and they sound like rock and roll to me
And as to sub-titled films - they're great too. I would honestly say that half of my all time top ten films are subtitled.

Hi Darqdean:
Do you recall a couple weeks back in a poll regarding the best songwriters Ivan brought up that Peter Sinfield was commissioned to translate a non-English language band's lyrics into English and he completely re-wrote the lyrics. Was this for one of these albums?

Yes, it was for PFMs Photos of Ghosts and The World Became The World. The 1975 album The Chocolate Kings was also in English, but I cannot remember who wrote the lyrics for that one.
Le Orme's Felona E Sorona was given English lyrics by Peter Hammill (as Felona and Sorona)

I feel that the Italian Prog would have the same effect since I would have no idea what was being sung.
Rushfan4, certainly I don't think you're racist to answer your question. But you should reconsider this statement after giving 4 or 5 Italian classics a fair dozen spins or so. What you will find is that after you get "used" to the sound of the language, it quickly just becomes another instrument in the band, but a lead instrument. Eventually, it blends with the music and you hear only the quality and the passion of the vocal, you won't care than you can't understand the lyric. I'm a huge Italian fan and I speak only Engish. It's not a problem. In fact, I almost enjoy foreign language music more now because I'm not distracted or hung up on content. I'm enjoying the music and not worrying about the lyrics say.
It will take a little work, yes. You won't love it on your first play. But once you get over the language thing, you open up a whole new world. Any of us sell ourselves short in a big way if we only listen to music in our native language.

I guess I've ignored Genesis to a certain extent. They never struck a chord with me so to speak, atleast not a resounding one. I won't go as far to say they are overrated, but mainly because I haven't heard the vast majority of their output.
And as far as foreign languages in music go, sometimes I find they enhance the musical experience, eg. Anglagard. While great lyrics certainly add to a song, essentially music is seperate from the lyrics.
And I prefer authenticity in films, if I am watching a film about Spain, then it makes sense they are speaking Spanish. As they say, body language is 90% of language, so while you don't get the exact feel of what they are saying in the translation you can pick up quite easily what they mean.

I'd like to add that sometimes understanding the lyrics can be a definite drawback. This is one of the reasons why I've never been too much into Italian prog - the lyrics tend to be a bit on the overwrought side, though of course this is not the case for each and every band. The Seventies band Pholas Dactylus are musically very good, very much in the KC vein - yet, I can't listen to their "Concerto delle Menti" without laughing because of the lyrics. Micky knows what I'm talking about... He's seen my expression often enough whenever he puts on that album!

I'm not sure how much of my following comment is comparing apples to oranges, but I have never been a fan of opera, which is far as I am aware traditionally sung in Italian. Admittedly I have never really heard anything but clips/advertisements, etc.. but it has never truly interested me. I do have one Rick Wakeman album (I think Zodiaque) where he has an opera singer singing the songs (in English) which I don't really care for too much.
This being said, I'm always willing to give something a shot, I am currently listening to the streaming Banco on PA. The first two songs from Banco sounds pretty good.
Also, I was listening to a couple of the songs on the Supernatural Fairy Tales box set last night. There is a version of PFM - Celebration. Mostly instrumental with a small amount of vocals in English (not sure if originally recorded that way, or if this was an English re-recording).

Ignoring isn't really an issue, unless its a band that I have heard (Porcupine Tree) and didn't like and just wasn't interested in exploring further; or, a band that I previously enjoyed (Dream Theater) and just got burned out on or repeatedly disappointed by. The real issue is time. Time to buy, listen and absorb. For me, listening to 2000 albums enough to write an effective review like Sean Trane is not realistic.
I suppose the band that most fits the bill of the question is Vandergraf Generator. But again, not really ignored, just not gotten around to.
Those of you ignoring prog metal: it is important to note that there are many who have the label, but have little to do with the metal side of it. Its not all Tool, Dream Theater and Opeth. Check out the first Gordian Knot.
