For me, the fun of prog music is in all the twists and turns it takes. Like a great movie, many prog records feel like adventures with both a lot of detailed artistry and effort. The complexities are a great reason for a listener to come back multiple times to hear what he or she didn't pick up on before. Mind you, this is coming from a person who also loves simpler genres such as alternative rock and punk (in fact, I prefer both genres to prog). I often like those genres for entirely different reasons, but in my opinion, prog's feeling of adventure and artistry is what made me gravitate to it as one of my favorite genres. Even when it comes to alternative rock, I often choose more artsy bands in the genre such as Smashing Pumpkins or Radiohead.

Because loud music makes me tired. Except for prog. And experimental stuff. And some metal.

I think everybody has said most of what makes prog not boring.
Forgot a few things however. Great prog is timeless and has a special quality that has transcended down the decades to us.A great album still sounds as great today and is still as relevant as it was when it was first recorded all those years ago.Besides prog contains some of the most beautiful songs and tunes ever recorded in the rock world. |

Good writing, fine arrangements and performance. In prog rock, the larger the composition the greater the vision required to make sure the bigger works don't lose their way and yet be varied enough to get to the end alright. Cohesive, varied with depth with detail.
Should work on short to long numbers. |
