I don't know a lot about porg, but I can say what I love about prog. Tongue

It's simply music that offers more. More depth. More variation in feeling, even within a single song. A great prog epic is like a movie in sound. It has moments of drama, reflection, surging energy, and a sense of flow to it.

Man, I can't believe I'm saying this but...

'cause it make my brain work.

I know, I know, most rock music is designed for the exact opposite effect, but if my little grey sponge isn't engaged when I 'listen' to music I find it uncomfortable. Back ground or activity filled music is very different and I suppose that's part of why I listen to other genres.

I'm not a fan of pork. I'm not Jewish/Muslim/vegetarian, but I avoid the stuff as much as possible. Do you know how much pigs are similar to humans? Everytime someone asks a cannibal what human flesh tastes like, they always say it tastes like pig.

Yep. These are features that prog shares with few other music genres, and why I like it. Prog is a fascinating auditory journey, and good prog offers something new to discover each time you listen to it.

In this case, I'm quite happy just to agree with what everyone else says.  Otherwise I might be forced to admit the answer is "I dunno, I just really like it, you know?"

Porg is dirty movies with a Rick Wakeman soundtrack.

Not my scene.

Prog, however IS my scene because it moves my rhythm organs and stimulates my brain.

For me, is quite simple. It's the experience of listening music meant to be listened.

One element to keep it interesting is swapping time signatures 5:8 to 4:4 to 3:4... for example "Money" by PF was composed in 7:4 until it reaches the solo and slaps hard into a 4:4 rhythm .... and keep away from repetitive scales

Good prog is good because all the elements make for a good listening experience as a whole. The difference between prog and other genres are just the elements themselves. There's enough variation in prog (at least according to PA) that I couldn't describe any appeal that's universal to all prog, except for aforementioned variation. Many of the best prog albums make for very unique and varied experiences.

I love how it has some sounds actually originate from Mars.
I love how it has singers of these ageless times with kitchen prose and gutter rhymes.
I love how it provides unexpected twists and turns.
I love 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, polyrhythms, nested polyrhythms.
I love how women fawn over it.
I love barbecue ribs.
I digress.

The stuff that makes it good? WinkLOL

I find it fascinating because of its diversity and well...progressiveness! Guess I'm just weird....I was never into music, just found it boring and uninteresting. Even if I liked something, it just got generic and samey. So I find prog not boring because it actually does different things! The song structures, the different influences, the many many directions it can go. You never really know what a prog (insert sub genre) album will be like, where it'll take you, sometimes you get swept off your feet in awe and surprise.

This, for me, doesn't happen with non prog music.

Prog is thinking man's (and woman's) music. When music is allowed to just "be" and not feel the constraints of run time or audience (and label) expectations, the results are often thrilling. Great art is never boring.

I do like participants who recognize that women listen to prog.  Also the comment is spot-on.

I have to say I do dislike the intellectual superiority that sometimes comes off prog fans (me included). I like to think it's got more to do with the intensity of focused listening and the personal tastes that need more complexity and variation.

Good Prog creates new neural connections in my brain.  Takes my mind to places I've never been.   And since Prog is more complicated then pop, I hear new things in the best prog that I've never heard before, even if I've listened to the music 50 times before.   Feels like awe.   Outstanding Prog is like a drug.

Clap though I can't say I dislike it per se.  it is one thing as I posted earlier that keeps prog from getting boring.. the fans of it. Never a dull moment when you get a bunch of people that think they are more evolved and superior to others all gathered in the same room.

It started when I was a kid when I first listened to The Beatles 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band' that led the path to the greatest rock music in the universe;  Prog! -  Rock music that was intelligent, diverse, and perhaps at times pretentious, but never dull or boring.

^^ The Mothers of Invention's "Freak Out!" was already in a "freak'''s music collection when "Sgt.Pepper" was released ie. Prog was already born at the time when "Sgt.Peppers" was released. yes, the Beatles were very influential re that English Symphonic rock scene in late 60s / early 70s.

---------

prog, as a music made by "freaks" for "freaks", cant be boring ie. it must be a pitoresque place!

Most music genres exist because they cannot do what another can. Nor should they. Who would want, say, an ACDC album to sound like the Goldberg variations?
Oh wait. That's porg.

Prog.

Yes. ;)

For me, the fun of prog music is in all the twists and turns it takes. Like a great movie, many prog records feel like adventures with both a lot of detailed artistry and effort. The complexities are a great reason for a listener to come back multiple times to hear what he or she didn't pick up on before. Mind you, this is coming from a person who also loves simpler genres such as alternative rock and punk (in fact, I prefer both genres to prog). I often like those genres for entirely different reasons, but in my opinion, prog's feeling of adventure and artistry is what made me gravitate to it as one of my favorite genres. Even when it comes to alternative rock, I often choose more artsy bands in the genre such as Smashing Pumpkins or Radiohead.

I think everybody has said most of what makes prog not boring.

Forgot a few things however. Great prog is timeless and has a special quality that has transcended down the decades to us.A great album still sounds as great today and is still as relevant as it was when it was first recorded all those years ago.Besides prog contains some of the most beautiful songs and tunes ever recorded in the rock world.

Good writing, fine arrangements and performance. In prog rock, the larger the composition the greater the vision required to make sure the bigger works don't lose their way and yet be varied enough to get to the end alright. Cohesive, varied with depth with detail.

Should work on short to long numbers.
