I listened to Shakti with John McLaughlin for the first time last night, and I was left underwhelmed.  Another one of those 30+ year old albums that was probably awesome at its time, but since I have no previous connection to it, it is just meh.

Well, I am 30 years younger than you, and the self-titled debut was so good, it left me passed out on the floor. Wink
People complain about DT just playing as fast as they can etc... etc...  For many parts of that Shakti album that seemed to be all that they were doing.  Also, there seemed to be a lot of repetitiveness.  Another one of those albums that I am underwhelmed with on the first listen, so I will now have to try to listen to multiple times to see if it grows on me or not.

Prediction:

1. Porcupine Tree - The Incident
2. Epignosis - Still The Waters
3. The Decemberists - The Hazards Of Love
4. Maudlin Of The Wall - Part The Second
5. Simon Railton - Here It Is

I somehow don't feel encouraged by this.

Beardfish?

Yep. But we do have the same number two so that's something.

A strange coincidence, indeed.

In my top 5 as well.

New B&B expected this year!

So it's certain for this year?

Mr. James seems to think so.

It is not my purpose.

I made the prediction based on the fact that albums who get mentioned more than 3-4 times (as a high-ranked album) tend already to be eligible for the top (10).

It sounds like you will have the support of four Collaborators, at least, when the times comes.

Same with Decemberists, not to mention Maudlin.

Porcupine Tree will win with a 1000 votes lead.

Then it's not certain. Wink

I'm okay either way. If it's this year, I hope it doesn't get released too late.

Dead

I'll buy the album, and probably will enjoy it, but I just hate that this is a given.

Actually, you never know, HoL enjoys a very strong following.

True, but I bet it will only be good enough for 2nd place, tops.

Wouldn't you rather be a Maudlin lobbyer (y or i?)?

Maybe I'll do a parallel topic on the main forum (if no one jumps ahead of course), and compare it with the Collabs top.

Yeah, really.  Prog for the whole family, I guess, but I'm just not that into the Tull or PF.

I don't really have a runaway favorite yet this year.  There are plenty of albums that I have enjoyed but none that I have thought was outstanding yet.  The Presto Ballet album just wowed me from the first listen last year and I still really enjoy it.  Phideaux, Beardfish, and the new Porcupine Tree are all hopefuls though.  IQ's Frequency is good and will need more listens from me.  Astra's The Weirding and The Wishing Tree's Ostara have gotten my most plays so far.

I've not heard the sample, but if this album is anything like Insurgentes, I will not be merciful and will gladly send it in the direction of Simon Railton.

I've heard it's even more "metal" than FOABP, but could just be a rumor.

I do enjoy maudlin but Hazards is much better. It'd probably make top 10 prog.

I still feel incredibly underwhelmed by the new Maudlin. Can't imagine giving it more than 3 stars when the time comes. Maybe even 2.

Surprised you were so down on that one Robert, our tastes have been similar on many albums.  I thought Insurgentes more wonderful than any recent PT.  Smile
...that moment you realize you like "Mob Rules" better than "Heaven and Hell"
