And, in a moment of slight annoyance... these are the scholarships listed in a newsletter I got from my hopefully future college.

Ahmet Ertegun Memorial Scholarships: for students of Turkish descent
Dulverton Scholarships: for students from Central and Eastern Europe
Hill Foundation Scholarships: for students from Russia undertaking a period of study before returning to develop careers in their home country
Noon/Oxford/OCSKET Scholarships: for students from Pakistan
Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Scholarships: for UK students of Muslim faith
Raffy Manoukian scholarships: for Armenian nationals or those of Armenian descent
Reach Oxford: for those from developing countries, who, for political or financial reasons, cannot study for a degree in their own country.

Hence, unless we consider Cornwall a developing country, no opportunities there for British students.

Now, looking further there appear to be a couple that are available for British students (generally with backgrounds studying elsewhere or from the commonwealth, which is understandable)... and I'd have applied too late anyway, and I'm not too bothered about this personally (nor am I particularly nationalistic). It does seem weird, though.

Anyway, I'm otherwise very content. Anyway, stop breeing and I'll try to stop posting excessive amounts about Baldur's Gate.

It honestly was akin to someone in a bad marriage, knowing it's finally over, and divorce is inevitable.

I like it Embarrassed, but mostly because I'm a big DT fan... I don't love it though and I'm highly disappointed by it. There's a few people in this thread though that I know think it's the best thing ever and I am confused by that fact.

I heard the first two tracks from Bacon CLettuce and Soiled Loincloths and they were pretty awful.

Petrucci's guitar playing in the opener sounded like Warren Haynes at times... not too bad.

Then there was Peart's growls... what the hell?

The final insult was the sh*t poor keyboard part in the second track.

Oh and the fact it was just Power Metal that somehow reminded me of Linkin' Park in a weird way (meaning it sounded nothing like them but I had a Linkin' Park song in my head after I listened to those first two tracks).

I may attempt to listen to the rest but I don't want my head to asplode.

A triple post: just for my darling Henry

The war on Terror is pointless.  Why the hell are there even troops in Afghanistan?  Seriously.  There's even less of a point of them being there than in Iraq (and we shouldn't have been there either!).

Seriously.  The Terrorists are on the Internet.  That's how they work.  They're all over the world.  They sometimes go to Pakistan though but nobody would dare invade Pakistan (and I'm not suggesting that either).

Leave the terrorists alone and they may actually leave us alone.  Invading them, killing them or whatever, will just make things work.

I have heard it.

I've also seen the documentary about the making of it.

Yes it's a masterpiece but that doesn't necessarily mean people should enjoy it. Wink

As it happens, I do enjoy it.

Clap  I've been saying that for years!
All that money the US has spent on wars should be used on securing our borders. And NO not walls for those mexicans we hate oh so much, but true border control and money for airports.
Not to mention leaving Iraq, Afghanistan eventually and moving all our bases and troops out.
We are making more terrorism by being there.

Now back to why Dream Theater is the greatest band ever in history.

the war in Iraq is one of history's greatest foibles. There was no reason to invade and it's killed more people than 9/11 did.

Remember Iraq is ABSOLUTELY NOT LIKE VIETNAM! That place was wet while Iraq is dry LOL
Also, Iraq never got expanded and drug out for 13 years.

Well I've been thinking along similar lines as well.

However, it was what Diane Abbot said on television last night that made me convinced.

She said that the terrorists work on the Internet and could live anywhere in the world.

Also, when was the last really serious bit of terrorism in the west?  I am sure there is something planned but there's not been anything happen for ages.

It's all just stupid hype.

And yep, far too many innocents have died for no reason whatsoever.

Mike, the war in Afghanistan is also pointless.  What are we fighting for?

It's a war against Islam, not a war against terrorism.  That's 'cause apparently we're all racist bigots.

BC & SL!?!? DONT DO IT!!!!

And at least Afghanistan I could understand. The taliban was clearly training, at the very least harboring, terrorists. Iraq was not. Though if I was President I would probably go a little harder in Afghanistan, set the deadline for 18 months and start moving out then.
You guys know the Wolfowitz Doctrine?
In short it calls for: Pre-emptive war, uni lateral action, Iraq, oil
Bush's ENTIRE foreign policy was decided 7 years before he was in office....

I also found it great Papa Bush didnt pursue invading Iraq the 1st time, saying it would be a total mess and impossible to manage.

No, the training takes place in Pakistan as well.  Actually, mostly in Pakistan.

When we invaded Afghanistan I didn't think we should have.  Most people though didn't seem to mind.  Then we had an illegal war in Iraq as well.  Just to rub it in even more.  Most people did mind.

Hey like I said, my goal would be to eventually leave Afghanistan as well, not to mention all our bases and troops from the middle east.
Wasn't one of their big beefs was that we had troops and bases stationed in Saudi Arabia??
Anyway, yea leave the Middle East and the scale back in defense spending should be used for things at home, or beefing up our domestic security.

Afganistan is like a big beefy guy full of pride beating the sh*t out of some small guy who rear ended him in his car out of spite for the guy driving a hummer around and destroying the world. It was provoked, but a lot of people are just watching going "stop! Stop! He's already deaaaad!!"

We have left Iraq but we shouldn't have even been there in the first place.  In fact, we invaded illegally and Blair should be up for war crimes.

8 British troops have died this week in Afghanistan.  That's more than have ever died in Iraq in a week (as far as I am aware).

And they weren't killed my Afghans but roadside bombs.

Once again your view of the world disappoints me. Iraq is one thing, but the Taliban was demonstrably supporting Al-Qaeda (and the Taliban still exists!), and we were leaving Al-Qaeda alone. I think a lot of the things we've done haven't helped, but we can't just close our eyes and hope it goes away, unless we're willing to accept the risk of another attack. Personally, I would since a lot more people die in car accidents and crap, but I know other people aren't as lassiez-faire about their personal safety as I am.

But at least you don't believe in f**king 2012 like pomt3. That's even worse than the infantile 9/11 conspiracies.

Islamic extremists (suicide) bombed a hotel in Jakarta.  At least 8 dead, many more injured.

Just to go to the BBC homepage, I'm sure it's a top story.

No, you're right.  It's a war on terrorism.  Not a war on a country.

I want to get rid of the Taliban/Al-Quaida as much as everyone but they went about it the wrong way.  You don't bomb the crap out a country just to try and kill an organisation that may or may not have been there in the first place.

Besides, if Osama had been killed, it wouldn't have been the end of it anyway.  It's not just about Afghanistan.

There's terrorists in the UK.  There's Terrorists in America.  Do we then bomb those places?

No, of course not.

So why bomb Tora Bora, Kandahar, Helmand and all those other places, hoping to stop terrorists that have likely moved to Pakistan and the rest of the world?  It may have been a threat initially but it's not so much now.

I'm not saying give up entirely.  I'm saying there approach it a different way.

So why did Jakarta deserve to get bombed today?

I haven't seen the news today...

What's happened?

Islamic extremists (suicide) bombed a hotel in Jakarta.  At least 8 dead, many more injured.

Just to go to the BBC homepage, I'm sure it's a top story.

That's awful news. Cry

And to answer your question.

They didn't deserve to be bombed.  It wouldn't have mattered if we were in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or nowhere at all, they'd still have bombed there.  That's the problem with this form of terrorism.  It's almost impossible to stop.

But bombing the crap out of somewhere and killing civilians (with guns, tanks, helicopters and whatever else) isn't the answer either.

Hmmm, there's a section of Born To Run that reminds me of VdGG's Killers.  It's just disturbed me greatly.

And I need to hear the remaster of Nivraym.

Ah but Luke E. Kant, remember you'll be downloading the remaster, most likely.  Pat's listening to the original.

Also, Pat needs L'Infonie's Volume 333 and Volume 3333.

Oooh Gary Moore on the goggle box.  Not with Colosseum II though... but he's still excellent in his own way.

BC&SL is the 3rd best DT album, and Octahedron has finally grown enough that I'd give it 4 stars. But it's definitely still worse than Frances. Tongue

whoever thinks that any prog album is a masterpiece should listen to this album before reviewing their so called masterpiece

Pink Floyd is the most boring of the big classic prog bands IMO. Animals might be the only album of theirs I could give anything higher than 3 stars.

And DSotM is an album that I've never really understood, even when I used to like PF.

Edit: Nick Mason is one of the worst drummers ever amirite?

Sean Malone isn't one of my favorite bassists, but he's one of my favorite Chapman Stick musicians. Although that doesn't say much considering that 1) I've only heard probably 5 or 6 other musicians play Chapman Stick and 2) Tony Levin = Master of the Chapman Stick, and all other are irrelevant. LOL

Edit: If triple posts from James annoy Henry, will triple posts from me annoy him as well?  I suppose we'll find out...

Oh, and Octahedron is medicore by TMV's standards. And Pink Floyd is indeed very boring nearly all of the time.

And yes, please keep politics out of here. There's a political discussion thread for that, which I try to avoid. Wink

It would be a grand bird and sock takeover of the SR. Unless we use lolcats that is. Wink
