Essential:
A Trick Of The Tail (5/5) ONE OF MY TOP FIVE ALL TIME ALBUMS
Seconds Out (4/5) GOOD LIVE ALBUM THAT ACTS AS A COMPILATION
Selling England By The Pound (5/5) BEST PG ERA GENESIS ALBUM FOR ALL ROUND QUALITY OF SONGS AND PRODUCTION
Foxtrot (5/5) SUPPERS READY
Nursery Cryme (4/5) GREAT SONGS/ROUGH SOUND QUALITY
Wind And Wuthering (4/5) LAST GREAT GENESIS PROG ALBUM

Take it from "Trespass" and further on, one step at the time and stop right after "A trick of the Tail"

I would have to say that Selling England By The Pound would be the best
bet for an intro. It has great songs, a bit stronger than Foxtrot or
Nursery Cryme (which are both awesome and the next 2 to get), and not
as sprawling and contriversial as The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (My
fave, but definitely not for the uninitiated.) If you want to explore
Phil era stuff, Wind and Wuthering and Duke are my faves (Sorry to the
hardcore, but I do really like Duke).
For live stuff, Seconds Out features Bruford on some tracks (Cinema Show is orgasmic) and the 73 Live one is great too.

1. Foxtrot 2. Nursery Cryme / Selling England by the Pound (tie) 3. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 4. Wind & Wuthering 5. A Trick of a Tail
Those are the albums that you and every prog rocker in the world gotta have in their collection no matter what. No excuses please, it's an strict obligation.

I think the 'Lamb' would be the proper place to start. Easily identifiable 3-5 mins pop/rock tunes. The only thing "controversial" is the retarded story and concept, something Gabriel did for people to sit and overanalyze, turning the focus away from the poorly made tunes.

I would start with Live. A great album with some of their best songs.
But if it must be a studio album, get Nursery Cryme (their third album) is a good way to start off. It's the first album with the classic lineup that really established their sound. It's worth it solely for The Musical Box, which is the definitive Genesis song that established their sound in my opinion.

A shame really...i have always overlooked genesis because of phil collins and have always tried to stay away from listening to this band and have only heard the most famous songs like Land of confusion, Dancing with the moonlit knight and i can't dance and so on. I actually only got the first genesis album on vinyl but that is hardly prog so i hope someone can recommend me a good first proper genesis album. |
I tell you, the best way to start to discover Genesis is when you start with NURSERY CRYME.
It's the first record with Phil Collins on drums and Steve Hackett on guitar and the album where Genesis found their own niche. It got the perfect place to start with the classic "The Musical Box".
After that record, you should go for FOXTROT and it's progressive term, with one of prog's greatest epics "Supper's Ready".
Next should be SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND, which is the most complete record of the golden-era Genesis. You already know "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight", so you'll get more classics like "The Cinema Show", "Firth Of Fifth" (with one of prog's best and definitive guitar solos), the band's first hit "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe") and the brilliant instrumental "After The Ordeal". This is also the best produced record of Genesis, with a very fine sound, where you can hear all the instruments very well, I recommend you to buy the difinitive edition remastered cd, from all classic Genesis albums though.
My introduction to Genesis was the double album THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, which was not the perfect start to get into the band. It's Genesis mostly dark, hidden doored and also most artistic release and when you grow into the story and music of this record you will for sure fall in love with.
After the Gabriel swansong LAMB LIES DOWN..., you'll get with A TRICK OF THE TAIL and WIND AND WUTHERING two more classic records from the progressive Genesis, with Phil Collins on vocals. Another great addition is the double live record SECONDS OUT, Steve Hackett's last official release with Genesis, he left after this one to go further with his solo career.
Don't forget the first Genesis live album called GENESIS LIVE from the year 1972 with the classic line-up and some of their best songs performed live and the band's second studio album TRESPASS, which is the first progressive Genesis release, with great melodies and long instrumental passages. It contains their hardest track and first big classic "The Knife", which is close to prog metal! Look out for this great album somewhere between the recommended ones from my side.
If you have enough money, buy the first Genesis archive boxset from their early period with unrealeased material and a complete live performance of the LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY record.
That's all what you need.

Don't forget Trespass, the album that layed the groundwork. It wasn't complete until Nursery Cryme, but Trespass is an excellent essential album after the big 4 (Nursery, Foxtrot, Selling, Lamb).

Yep ofcourse i got the fantastic close to the edge and has actually gotten Selling england...and is perhaps a bit disapointed as i expected all the songs to be ecually great i personally only find the title track, firth of filth and the battle of epping forrest to be the really interesting tracks but i guess i will continue exploring genesis with either foxtrot or the lamb
