No, it's the way it sounds, but... can you describe it? It's easy to describe black metal saying ''Growling and barking and heavy guitars...'' it's easy to describe 60's psychedelic pop saying ''Trippy and happy ballads...''

But the differences between even the most iconic bands are SO great that not even sub-genres like Krautrock, Fusion, Space, Art, RIO and all of those can't describe it.

Just look at the differences between ELP, Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Rush. Someone not interested in rock couldn't put them all in the same genre, yet there is something he could say, and that's ''They have a strange sound.''

And I guess that very, VERY, VERY, VERY roughly, that's what prog's about, having a new and strange sound.

 

I don't care how the music is made, it's the outcome that matters...

I understand completly what you mean, and I agree with most of what you´re sayin. My point with this thread seems to be proven, the defintion of progressive (though it is irrelevant) is vauge.

The progressive music on this site covers the whole spectrum - from very near Classical to very very metal.....

So what is progressive music ???

No one reads threads on here it's a know fact,they just go in bull nosed with their little bit.I listern to all those bands  you mentioned,but saying all that if i see a post with anything modern in it to it, cos they are total crap in my view.As i mentioned in a previous thread obviously not read by anyone,prog sucks after the late '70's.

Hmm GYBE and Änglagård aren´t total crap but i must say, atleast i think though i weren´t around, the spirit of the 70s is long gone and will never rise again...

More likely that post was ignored by everyone for the childish crap it is: Prog does NOT suck after the late 1970s - that is a generalism which is untrue, and I for one am sick of reading this kind of stuff time after time - from you especially. As an oldie you should know better.

We all know you hate anything after 1974 - and it's reasonable to hold any opinion - but all you ever do is sl*g it off - you do not (and cannot, from what I have seen) provide thoughtful reasoning behind your words. In fact, you seem to be more prone to go in bull-nosed with your little bit and not consider the impact of what you are saying on the community as a whole.

I don't believe I've just said anything untrue or unfair - if I have, feel free to correct me.

I think you shouldn't just compare GYBE! to bands from the seventies. There may be a different spirit, but GYBE! are very experimental.

Funny, I was gonna post something similar after a young monitor engineer (who was into Radiohead/Nicleback/Moby/Primus etc etc) said he had no idea what prog was. That led to some soul-searching and we tried a list, but as always many eminent exceptions can be found for all of these. Some are positive, some are negative - I feel the term pomp-rock is extremely useful to separate that element of prog which is no longer "progressive" but relies on the sonic shorthands inherited from its earlier, leaner forebears. Still, here goes:-

  1. Music you have to put an amount of effort into appreciating
  2. Use of exotic instrumentation and effects
  3. Moving rock music structures beyond the 3 minute song
  4. Use of extended instrumental passages
  5. Exploration of sound production from the instrument (esp the electric guitar)
  6. Lyrics which explore themes outside the standard love-dance canon
  7. A freedom to incorporate musical styles which are, at first glance, distant from the blues/rock 'n roll mainstream (classical/jazz/Indian/African/Avant-garde)
  8. Prominent use of electronic instruments
  9. A tendency to feature virtuosity for it's own sake
  10. Music which takes itself (too) seriously
  11. Music which used the medium of studio/LP to create its first masterpieces
  12. Complex harmonic sequences
  13. Complex time signatures
  14. Songs which may journey between several textures and moods
  15. Reference to sci-fi/fantasy/myth in lyrical content
  16. Concept albums
  17. Use of theatrical elements, sets & scenery, advanced lighting technology and moving image as part of its live presentation.
  18. A heritage which grew from the psychadelic musical experimentalism of the 60's
  19. White,  middle-class music (enjoyed in the main by males)
  20. Music which moves the brain as well as the heart
