Don't give up on Dream Theater, I used to not like them now I listen to them everyday. Try Remedy Lane-Pain of Salvation and Red-King Crimson. Red isn't really Prog-Metal but it's pretty heavy

Try considering Anathema. Specially the album Natural Disaster.

ALTURA - 'mercy' (one of the most overlooked prog-metal album)

MATRAZ - 'gritaré (with stunning female vocals)

EXPLORERS' CLUB - 'age of impact' (Magna Carta project, the monsters of metal-prog gathered for a metal-opera)

LEONARDO the absolute man (same comment as above)

ACT - 'last epic', if you don't mind some pop in your prog-metal
"Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood)

mmm...maybe...

In the Woods...? You might like them, they are very epic but with no virtuoisism what so ever (or is that one word?) just long songs that focus on the emotional and "sonic" so to say side of the genre with a male singer (a very good I might add, although definitly not for everybody) and a theatrical female singer.

Somebody mentioned ARK...they are good, though too "hair metal " for me ...jajajajjaLOLLOLLOLLOLLOL

And then there are some bands that are almoust Post rock, like Agalloch and Anathema (in some cases)... in fact Anathema could be a metal Radiohead...

and then of course, there is...ToolBig smile

Did you listen to their first album, it's quite different from the follow-up ?

Could it be that you do not like DT because of the vocals? If so, then A Pleasant Shade of Gray from Fates Warning could be worth trying. PA has some very good samples of this album.

You'll probably like Shadow Gallery. They sound like a mixture of Pink Floyd and Dream Theater.
Meshuggah is probably too heavy and complex for your taste. But you can listen to the samples here on PA and see if you like them. I do!

Paynes Grey - Kadath Decoded

Without doubt the most original prog - metal album I've ever heard. This album is is based on a HP Lovecraft novel; Dreamquest for the Unknown Kadath. This album blends some brilliant shredding guitar, flute, walls of synth ass well  piano and in some areas sections has an almost Latin feel. The vocals are extraordinary. There are two very simialr sounding guys who both have astonishing voices. Hagen Schmidt who handles most of the lead vocals is perhaps the finest meatl vocalist I've ever heard.

This album can be difficult to track down but I strongly suggest you do, it's worth the effort!!

You are correct Mike. I bought my copy back in 1999 from the now defunct  New Zealand online vendor Cranium Music run by Richard Stockwell. I also got a copy of their EP Infinity which is more straight ahead power metal.

Ken Golden often carries the album at the Laser's Edge.

Great album, Moonlight Waters is the highlight for me. The first 20 minutes are easily the finest 20 minutes of prog metal I've ever heard.
