Subject: Help with prog metal

Ever since I got involved in prog music I shunned any band labeled prog metal. The reason I did this is because I tried samples of the "best" prog metal had to offer and did not like it at all. Ok I'll tell you what it was. but don't get mad because it was just a matter of personal preference. I tried Dream Theater, but I just did not like thier style, in spite of thier virtuosity. I also tried Opeth, and although I really liked some of it, the growling bothered me and ruined it for me. It's not that I don't like intense music, it's just that I felt both DT's olympic event approach to music and Opeths snarls detracted from the music IMO. So having shunned prog metal for over a year now, I happen to see a comment made by someone claiming that Riverside is on the softer side of Prog Metal. I took this to mean less growling, so I checked it out and was in love. I also really have recently enjoyed LTE, even though it has 3 members of DT, they take a different aproach. These two groups have enlightened me to the fact that there is probably alot more music in the Prog-metal genre that I would enjoy. So I was hoping you could help me establish some good prog-metal devoid of growling and on the softer side of metal. Thanks in advance. postamble()

Check out Shadow Gallery, Magellan, Enchant, Fates Warning and Queensr˙che. All fantastic prog-metal bands that are rich on melody and are generally less heavy than most other prog-metal bands!

You sound like me ...First of all, don't give up on DT that fast, there's some great music there.... My favorite band is Riverside nowadays (I love Yes to death...) I'd like to suggest Pain of Salvation if you don't know them, and especially The Perfect Element pt. 1 and Remedy Lane, which I think are great. Also Vanden Plas - Christ0 may be for you (January Sun is just incredible). There is soo much more in this "soft side" of metal...........

The F***ing Champs
Planet X
Don Caballero
Nebelnest
Though none of those bands are in the category 'progressive metal', I find them to be so in the truest sense of the phrase.

This is a job for Trickster.
Wait until he gets here. He has a wide variety of prog metal to recommend that don't sound like the top bands from the genre.
One of them is called In The Woods - Omnio.

I don't consider Magellan or Enchant to be Prog metal ... Magellan is a kind of heavy Symphonic Prog and I consider Enchant to be Art Rock, IMO.

If you've tried Opeth, maybe you should give them a try again... but listen to their Damnation album.
As written in Wikipedia:
Damnation is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opeth - Opeth 's seventh album, released in April 2003, following the band's previous album http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deliverance_%28album%29 - Deliverance the year before. The album was a radical departure from their typical http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_metal - death metal sound and into the much softer, 1970s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock - progressive rock genre.

Try Savatage - one of the best prog metal bands imo (and most overlooked)

Pain of Salvation is definitely the most ambitious prog metal act
around - and also the best one imo. Try Remedy Lane, The Perfect
Element or dare to attack Be. Conceptual albums, eclectic music,
splendid vocal performance and harmonies, technical without show-off,
long compositions... everything.
Fates Warning is indeed good but it's special. Try Ayreon too.

i love "Tage", i've seen them live, i have full discography and i've reviewed some of their releases but i always thought of them as US/power/broadway metal band and a prog one...
i would recommend them cause they are a great band but not for prog metal..

Still, both have lot's of metal influences in their music, notably Magellan.

If you don't like dream theater you might not enjoy Fates Warning or Shadow Gallery. They sound similar to DT, which is precisely the reason why i don't find them that great.(just a comment, i admit i haven't heard much of either band and i don't intend to offend anyone) but you do enjoy LTE so you might like them still.
These are some bands you may like, the albums i listed are generally on the lighter side of metal: 1. Anathema - 'A Fine Day To Exit' or 'Judgement' or 'Alternative 4'. They sound kinda similar to riverside, pink floyd and radiohead. I love this band.
2. Savatage - 'The Wake Of Magellan' Kinda Queen-like, very operatic, you may be shocked by the cheesiness
3. Wolverine - 'Still'. Again very similar to Riverside. Avoid their other 2 albums if you don't like growling as this one is much lighter and doesn't have growls. Have a listen to 'Taste Of Sand' if you can find it on the net anywhere.
4. Pain of Salvation - 'The Perfect Element pt.1' An amazing mix of almost every style of music in the world. Progressive-folk-power-electronica-rap-classical-metal. Highly recommended. Many parts that IMHO sound similar to LTE.
5. Opeth - 'Damnation' i love opeth. This is the only one by them without growling. Techincally it's not metal, but very good nonetheless.
6. Devin Townsend - 'Terria' Unlike anything you've heard before. It does have a very tiny amount of growling (only a little more than riverside), but it is done in a slightly unusual fashion in that it is often used to express joy and happiness rather than hatred or anger. I love this album, but it is quite hard to get into. Try find 'Nobody Here' on the internet or something. It's beautiful, majestic, emotional and uplifting Progressive industrial metal.

I second Pain Of Salvation but I would start with Remedy Lane which is less metalish and IMO as good as The Perfect Element.
For a band between neo-prog and metal (like Riverside) check out Arena.

Feel free to try listening to Ark!
A lot of it can be compared to Dream Theater; for example are all members virtuoses in their respective areas, however, they don't do as much instrument-masturbating show-offs, and their overall sound is more towards traditional hard rock/metal compared to dream theater. Let me also tell you that Jĝrn Lande is a very skilled vocalist with a very very nice voice, perfectly fit for the music made by Ark!
the only bad thing about Ark(imo) is that they split up after their 2nd album =(

Don't give up on Dream Theater, I used to not like them now I listen to them everyday. Try Remedy Lane-Pain of Salvation and Red-King Crimson. Red isn't really Prog-Metal but it's pretty heavy

ALTURA - 'mercy' (one of the most overlooked prog-metal album)
MATRAZ - 'gritaré (with stunning female vocals)
EXPLORERS' CLUB - 'age of impact' (Magna Carta project, the monsters of metal-prog gathered for a metal-opera)
LEONARDO the absolute man (same comment as above)
ACT - 'last epic', if you don't mind some pop in your prog-metal

mmm...maybe...
In the Woods...? You might like them, they are very epic but with no virtuoisism what so ever (or is that one word?) just long songs that focus on the emotional and "sonic" so to say side of the genre with a male singer (a very good I might add, although definitly not for everybody) and a theatrical female singer.
Somebody mentioned ARK...they are good, though too "hair metal " for me ...jajajajja
And then there are some bands that are almoust Post rock, like Agalloch and Anathema (in some cases)... in fact Anathema could be a metal Radiohead...
and then of course, there is...Tool

Could it be that you do not like DT because of the vocals? If so, then A Pleasant Shade of Gray from Fates Warning could be worth trying. PA has some very good samples of this album.

You'll probably like Shadow Gallery. They sound like a mixture of Pink Floyd and Dream Theater. Meshuggah is probably too heavy and complex for your taste. But you can listen to the samples here on PA and see if you like them. I do!

Paynes Grey - Kadath Decoded
Without doubt the most original prog - metal album I've ever heard. This album is is based on a HP Lovecraft novel; Dreamquest for the Unknown Kadath. This album blends some brilliant shredding guitar, flute, walls of synth ass well piano and in some areas sections has an almost Latin feel. The vocals are extraordinary. There are two very simialr sounding guys who both have astonishing voices. Hagen Schmidt who handles most of the lead vocals is perhaps the finest meatl vocalist I've ever heard.
This album can be difficult to track down but I strongly suggest you do, it's worth the effort!!

You are correct Mike. I bought my copy back in 1999 from the now defunct New Zealand online vendor Cranium Music run by Richard Stockwell. I also got a copy of their EP Infinity which is more straight ahead power metal.
Ken Golden often carries the album at the Laser's Edge.
Great album, Moonlight Waters is the highlight for me. The first 20 minutes are easily the finest 20 minutes of prog metal I've ever heard.
