Opeth "Blackwater Park" although "Still Life" is very heavy too.

yeah, i think it's all about how you define heavy
like Iron Maiden (not calling them prog) is a heavy band, but the guitar riffs aren't bone crunching
i dont know, maybe something like watchtower

Dream Theatre Live at Budokan.
It consists of three CD's, so it must be the heaviest.

I'd say Dream Theater's "Train Of Thought".

I think DT isnt much heavy as symphony x, for example
The Odyssey could be the heaviest album...

The world would be a boring place if we all had the same opinions.
The Odyssey is an amazing album, but I just think ToT is heavier.

That's a good point. I guess we're talking about 'sonic' heaviness rather than emotional heaviness but I could be wrong.
For me nothing is as heavy prog than Crimson's THRaKaTTaK but I guess Tool outdoes them for sheer sonic assault.

Everyone here looking for heavy but well-written owe it to themselves to get Cynic - Focus.
It is, to this day, one of the best albums I've ever heard. A prog album at heart, but with some metal intentions.

the albums here aren't about just making loud music.. I agree on you that focus is one of the best albums ever.. and it took about 5 years to make it.. and you can hear this..
and there are a lot of bad written not heavy albums on this archives too!!

I love Symphony X, but I just have a hard time calling it "heavy" because sometimes those synths really smooth the sharp edges of a song.
I do agree they're heavier than DT (though ToT gives them a run for their money), but Opeth is heavier than either.

The heaviest I have heard is Tools "Lateraus". Heavy in sound and intensity and in a few spots rage, especially the song "Ticks and Leaches" the final minute or so is the heaviest moment in prog. I never considered Dream Theaters Met pt2 heavy I just got their new album but haven't heard it yet but that is heavy from everything I have heard.

Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
The later albums are both softer and more boring...

If all you can come up with in the heavy category is opeth, tool or dream theatre, you guys are seriously missing out on the real heavy sh*t. I suggest you listen to Emperor - IX Equilibrium and Prometheus: The discipline of fire and demise. Emperor was Progressive black metal that will raise those little hairs on your neck. IX and Prometheus are their price albums. Enjoy!

Those two albums pale in compairison to their first two. The later are
definately more progressive, but they seemed forced. Their early
material truly had soul IMO.

This is exactly my problem with some metal. If I were in it purely for getting my ass kicked by noise, I'd just sit around listening to Cannibal Corpse all day.
