Why would that "put you off"? Admittedly, I have only seen excerpts of her TV show, but I didn't think she was as "flamboyant" as other gay celebrities. That is part of who she is. To tell her to keep her homosexuality off her show is basically asking her to get back in the closet! Is she never to mention her lovelife at all? I love the straight friends and family in my life, but I would never ask them to check their heterosexuality at the door. |

When I hear someone who is homophobic I always think they are homo and overcompensating. Particularly when it comes to politicians or people who make a big deal about their religion. It's no surprise when they caught engaging secretly in what they openly condemn.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Again, I worded that poorly. What I meant was when Ellen turns her show into a political / social forum. It's a downer to go from laughter and dancing and then, "Let's talk about the Rutgers situation." For an analogy, it would be like going to a Neal Morse concert where he preaches an actual sermon instead of playing songs for the whole show. I hope that clarifies what I meant, and I'm sorry for not being clear at all. |

Yep, it has even been confirmed for years on their website's FAQ section. He's also blind in one eye, I think that was mentioned in the same sentence. This one here is an album made by Jónsi and his boyfriend Alex Somers, I didn't read the entire thread so perhaps it had been mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riceboy_Sleeps

Ok, understood. Its her show to does as she wishes, even if she wants to talk about "heavy" stuff. Personally, I'd be more annoyed if I saw her try and tiptoe around the topic of her gayness. |

Sure it's her show. But it's my TV, and I can say that I don't like something on it. I don't want her to tiptoe around her sexuality. When she jokes around about it, I'm fine with that. I dislike it when her show becomes serious about really anything. I don't watch Oprah at all. |

I genuinely don't understand what COM wanted us to do with this thread. The lesson here COM, is when you start a thread, don't "want" us to do anything. People don't work like that. If you're having fantasies about how people are going to respond, you'll always be disappointed.

This is quite the interesting topic. I can't say I'm surprised at the way this thread has played out (nor the ignorant-at-best attempts at derailing the subject). I'd like to ignore all of the posts questioning whether it -is- a valid topic for discussion: judgment has passed, the thread remains open. Music is a reflection of both the listener and the artist. Just as feelings close to the artist's heart will find themselves manifest in the music, so will the listener find inspiration in something that seems to touch home. Of course I cannot speak for everyone, but progressive rock in particular drew my youthful self into music because of its introspective lyrics and interesting music that was dominated by neither the masculine nor the feminine. It was there for me in full force as I went through my own "LGBT issues". It's still here for me, the self-actualized woman who finally came to terms with herself and her feelings, no thanks to a bigoted society. Prog was a strong foundation that never faltered for me, and I would never begrudge another that connection. So, to me, prog and LGBT issues are heavily intertwined. Lyrically, musically, aesthetically, it can all be argued as well as any interpretation can. The few out artists are an inspiration, as are the ones who've spoken out re: human acceptance over the years. When I write, perform, and record, I am an LGBT artist, even when my songs have no words. This is my experience, and it is not invalidated by virtue of being a minority experience.
Having been to a Neal Morse gig, that's not far from what you get. Preaching in the songs, preaching between the songs, and then, some old Spock's numbers changed up just enough to be preachy. In fact, if there were prog artists whose music was LGBT like Neal Morse's is Christian, with that same kind of visibility, we'd likely see this topic play out quite differently.

Except it would be much less offensive so there'd be less reason to discuss it.
